V: The Vigilante Geek. He loves his thesaurus and plays with dominoes, all while plotting schemes for taking down 'The Man' in his basement. A visually stylish film that is thematically as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face (Totalitarian regimes is bad, mkay). I wish he had been labelled X, that would have put a stop to his voracious verbosity. Lastly there is an ending that prompts a veritable volcano of vulgar viscosity (i.e. vomit). V end.

Nothing is perfect, but this one comes stunningly near. I've seen V over forty times now, and I still discover new details every time. Weaving is nothing short of awesome, giving a masked man so many emotions. The monologues are amazing, some images are incredibly powerful. And then there are a few scenes which are bound to give you goosebumps over and over again. Dominoes, anyone?

As time goes on, I've just come to like this movie less and less. Maybe it's the dependency on slow-motion. Maybe it's just that Natalie Portman takes a cinematic shit on-screen every chance she gets. This film is just so full of itself, and it's become irritating.

Alan Moore's refusal to participate in the production means we miss out on important questions--like what constitutes a terrorist or a freedom fighter. But the adaptation makes it closer to The Wachowski's brand, as we experience interconnectedness while a totalitarian regime oppresses several groups based on their social identity. It moves well, has great action, and spawned countless fanboy imitations via its endlessly quotable hero. Easily some of the best worldbuilding cinema has ever done.

While I agree with the points the movie makes I find that it portrays the government in such light that no one in the right mind would not rebel against it, it just seemed like such an obvious choice rather than one that requires moral debate. Still the action is impressive and Hugo Weaving does an amazing just acting behind a mask.

(2nd watch on blu-ray) Decidedly better than I remembered, this somewhat flamboyant (anti)hero dystopian vision bleeds comic book ink in the best way possible. Utilizing great iconography (the symbols of V, government etc.; cape, swords and Big Brother-esque screens), taut action scenes and quotable dialogue referencing everything from (paraphrased) political statements to Shakespeare, McTigue sticks as close to the source material as Snyder did in "Watchmen", crafting a movie almost as good.

This movie seemed to illustrate a bizarre view of a revolution, followed by a counterrevolution. V for Vendetta shows a deep and philosphical sense of human natures need for individuality. The use of the mask as a symbol for freedom and human individuality was a nice touch because the people of the city were able to unify behind it and stand up against their oppresser.

Vendetta has its heart in the right place, but its execution is so schizophrenic, the film ends up paling in comparison to the book it is based on. The action sequence at the end is pornographic compared to the rest of the film; the 30-minute incarceration scene is morally (and narratively) problematic; and timely political allegory dates an otherwise transcendent text.

Forever!'- the poster of this film. the return of needs repressed from that which would constrain it, the superego, is here supposedly overcome; a Dom named 'V' and his bdsm-chick - he tortures her into oblivion because 'he knew' it would prove a point - here revel in their protest as subjects to the domain of the father, which in their schizoid-paranoid position is felt as restrictive - and overthrow it for supposed freedom, for 'Utopia', except it is itself also totalitarian.

Watched this when I was a teenager originally and it now really seems like a film for teens. The movie is just so in love with itself that it becomes nauseating. The message isn't bad, juvenile, but not bad, but they just repeat it so many times that it becomes tedious. Has some pretty badass action scenes and the actual character of V is pretty damn suave but it's just not as good as it was when i was 17.

I guess you can't really discuss this film without dealing with the political content. The film seems to be advocating the controversial view of anti-dystopianism. We're talking about a film that dares to suggest that it's bad when a government kills its own citizens. Flippancy aside, V for Vendetta is entirely unsubtle but still quite compelling. And frankly you don't really need to think about the political content, since the film is watchable enough to watch just for entertainment's sake.

The title character was the only thing I enjoyed about this movie. The plot feels forced along and the "social commentary" made me want to vomit. When it started talking about how the government was persecuting gays, I actually found myself wondering if I was still watching the same movie.

The graphic novel adaptation that all others should be compared with. The Wachowskis have done the right thing in rewriting this into a tightly structured and boiled down version, that suits the format. The Thatcher- era theme of the novel fits well into the Bush-era of the first years of the new millennium, and even though its heavy on moral/almost preachy it still manages to be moving and feel personal.

It's long, Portman is unconvincingly English, and V is forgiven far too easily (and the romance sucks), but Weaving's voice is delicious, anarchy is excellent, the lesbian representation is a delightful surprise, and some of the visuals are great (I loved the knife trails). Certainly a mixed bag, but for the most part compelling.

I don't think I'd call Evey mild-mannered. BUT. People came into this movie I think expecting an action film. Boy, don't you feel dumb? Not a lot of people seem to like the contemporization of the graphic novel, but you need to do that sometimes irregardless of the popularity of that decision. No, it's not the same as the graphic novel. It doesn't have to be. The film has a great message -- "People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people."

Very cool, very jaw-dropping, very involving, and very important. The ideals this film projects upon us is not "liberal trash" but rather mindsets we must hold dear to. And these ideals are presented to us through wonderful dialogue creating a compelling story. Here and there you have some visually stunning action sequences, but it is the story that is important here. And the themes behind it.

I watched this because I had friends who told me it didn't have a political or religious agenda. Surprise, it did. And while V wasn't painted as a completely righteous fella - with his revenge-killings and all - in this movie terrorists are heroes and religious people are sleaze-bags. But the movie was well-done and I'd advocate revolution under that regime too. Plus, the mask was cool. I'd like to see V's super-secret mask-manufacturing factory.

A brilliant retelling of the graphic novel, V helps spread tolerance and knowledge. If you were smart enough to see it as more than an action movie you might have noticed it was trying to help you think for yourself. Though Natalie's accent is shoddy the acting is pretty solid all around and the stories being told are beautiful and moving. It doesn't hurt that the action is pretty kick-ass as well!

Rewatched it and figured it deserved a new review and score. It's not as great as I remember and I get why some people would not like it. It's cheesy and hamfisted in how it delivers its message. That said, at times it is quite poignant (probably more because of Moore than the Wachowski's). I particularly like the early monologue about words and ideas and their repression. I find something quite emotional there on a very base level. It's not the masterpiece of my teenage years, but it's good.

While it differs from the comic in many respects, the film itself stands up as an amazingly well done movie that has few faults to be found, when not compared to the source material. Hugo Weaving is amazing, as is Stephen Rea, and while Natalie Portman was the weakest part of the film, the rest of the film more than compensated for her.

It's not faithful adaptation of grafic novel by Alan Moore (and he didn't want his name on 'cause of that) but nevertheless it's still good. Please more comic adaptations like this in the future, no spider, super, bat man... The only bad thing is some useless dialogs between V and Ivy. I'd cut them.

V has to be one of the most intriguing characters in recent cinema. A deep and complex film, which increasingly gains in subtle meaning as it advances. A great cast also adds to the atmosphere. The only criticism I have is the ending, which was rather weak in comparison to the rest of the film. They could possibly have remained closer to the comic with Evey assuming the identity of V after his death. There are areas for improvement, but it's still pretty great.

Not quite sure why it was rated so highly on IMDb, although sharing screen writers with The Matrix (who also directed The Matrix) is an interested coincidence. There’s certainly some good ideas, and the action is decent despite feeling like it was a decade older than it actually was. But the tone and pacing kept me from truly getting engrossed in the film, feeling much longer than it actually was. The final act was nice though, making it a reasonable viewing experience.

There were a couple of aspects that really stretched credulity, and Natalie Portman's "British" accent was distractingly bad at times, but the performances, visual style, and political allegory are all strong enough to carry the movie. Oddly enough, the best scenes all feature one-off side characters - the doctor character V kills with a syringe and the previous occupant of Natalie Portman's cell both have an excellent flashback sequence apiece that really stands out.

Possesses about a tenth of the substance of the Alan Moore comic it's based on but it manages to do fairly well as a straight up action film. The political subtext would only serve as a profound lesson to elementary school kids as it's rather shallow in presentation.

Hugo Weaving's portrayal of the theatrical and verbose V is nothing short of perfect, and his relationship with Evey is every bit as good due to a strong performance by Natalie Portman. This is also a film that tends to beat you over the head with its not-so-enlightening political message, but if you can see it for what it really is - a fun action-drama - you'll have a great time throughout.

Weaving puts in a pretty astonishing performance considering he spends this movie behind a mask. Like the graphic novel, this film is thought provoking and entertaining, but also full of action and wonderful imagery. The ending is a fitting climax to this movie, even if it may not be to the taste of big fans of the novel. Portman is also very good and it's great to see Stephen Fry on the big screen. There is something almost intoxicating about this film! I love watching it again and again!

Not impressed first time round, I was expecting the Wachowskis to deliver another Matrix. Second viewing (2013) made me appreciate it more. Its political message is unsubtle but not heavy-handed and both Weaving and Portman are superb (Fry too). It has flaws - the Wachowski's fondness of thesaurus-destroying dialogue full of literary allusions and somewhat uneven pacing. But few films spawn a subculture where the message and visuals live beyond the film. Worth watching for that alone.

Amazingly well done movie, staying surprisingly close to the original graphic novel, and succeeds in bringing up many of the same ideas, if couched in a much more positive light. All the parts are played brilliantly, especially Natalie Portman's rendition of Evie.

The political conversations were pretty boring and there really wasn't that much action. The investigation subplot was more interesting than the main plot. It wasn't bad, but it was very disappointing.

The best comic book adaptation movie ever. Instead of all action and shallow characters, this one is the perfect mix of introspection, plot, complex protagonists, action, and a nice dose of history.

The creators of this would have us perceive its protagonist V as the heroic bane of a fascist regime that casts him as a psychopathic terrorist. Instead, it is apparent that V is indeed a psychopathic terrorist, and that the world around him was molded as if to validate his savior complex. All his enemies are as evil as someone so delusional might imagine, plot development invariably bends to his will, and Natalie Portman is inexplicably charmed by him even as he gruesomely slays the unarmed.

Much like Equilibrium, V for Vendetta is a stylish depiction of a struggle against totalitarian power. Take or leave what you will from the interesting political questions it raises, this film has a good script, quality performances from Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving, and terrific action sequences.
