A coming of age comedy/drama for the post hip hop generation. Malcolm is a geek, carefully surviving life in The Bottoms, a tough neighborhood in Inglewood, CA filled gangsters and drugs dealers, while juggling his senior year of college applications, interviews and the SAT. His dream is to attend Harvard. A chance invitation to a big underground party leads Malcolm and his friends into a, only in Los Angeles, gritty adventure filed with offbeat characters and bad choices. (imdb)

For a movie about crossing and clashing identities and personalities, DOPE perfectly encapsulates just that. Tonally it dances between comedy and drama like hip-hop breakbeats, in what could have been a mess. It's an old school flavor seen through a contemporary lens. Its image and charisma is unique -- exactly what more teen comedies and even indies should be. Funny, romantic, tense, eye-opening, and downright wonderful to watch.

Black Pineapple Express? It starts off very similar, but instead of going for the huge ending it ends kind of quietly. Would've preferred a bigger ending for a film with such great energy. More importantly it speaks to the black and POC kids in high school struggling with identity and "whiteness" since the Internet really took off (easier to find "white shit" now isn't it?) Ace soundtrack. Best use of Korn ever.

This was a lot of fun. It comes from a perspective you don't normally see in cinema, which I appreciated. The cinematography and costumes are so great and vibrant, the performances from the young cast are fresh and endearing, and the soundtrack is totally awesome. The previously tight screenplay does falter a bit in the third act and it became a little heavy-handed with its message at the end, though. Still, for the most part, I enjoyed the hell out of this, and I think you will too!

Seriously fun film. It's all at once relatable and not, that it toes that fine line really well. A so-so-cool throwback to the era I grew up in (nostalgia's sake) and an awesome soundtrack to boot. The final monologue does seem a little forced but it is poignant and raises a, unfortunately, valid point.

For years Hollywood has made teen crime action comedies like Risky Business or Doug Liman's Go. But Dope turned that premise on its head by infusing the story with an energy normally contained in golden era hip hop albums by Ice Cube or A Tribe Called Quest. I will say the picture's one flaw is also its strength: a channel surfing tone which shifts from coming-of-age hood drama to super fun heist movie. Although, given the lead's last monologue/college application essay, maybe that's the point?

Very original, laugh-out-loud hilarious, and wonderfully written. I enjoyed the hell out of this movie, especially because the main cast of characters (esp. the main protagonist) was so likeable and endearing. The message at the end is very hard-hitting and relevant. I really hope a lot of people see this movie. It does not deserve to be forgotten.

'Dope' loses steam as it rolls into its second act and the plot takes more prominence, but the old school soul and style of the picture shines through, thanks to fun characters, sharp humor, a classic soundtrack, and a relevant (if pronounced) message.

One of the most vibrant, entertaining films I have seen in recent memory. Everything works so well. The film deftly handles the change in tone during the two parts of the film. Moore is a revelation as the lead. The soundtrack choices work well in this film. A film that deals with teenage identity issues, especially when that issue is compounded by race and class.

Lots of fun. Doesn't quite nail the balance between comedy and drama, but then again the characters live in a place where those can shift pretty violently anyway. Deft script, good performances, brilliant soundtrack, and a moral that seems to ask "so how's this different from any other stoner comedy, then?"

Admittedly it stops being funny a little ways through (though up until that point I laughed quite a bit), and only occasionally sprinkles laughs into the mix as it transforms into a drama. I just love rap as a soundtrack for movies, and even a scene with a Korn song was awesome. In fact, it's a perfect marriage of music and visuals throughout. Tonally all over the place, but it's a lot of fun to watch because it's so energetic; a compelling and dynamic experience w/o becoming a mess.

Refreshing, thoughtful, a modern coming of age tale that has a bit of everything going on. The dialogue, characterization and the poignant message it sends make it one of the most unique films in a long time. It's a film that cannot be classified into a single genre and that proves to be both a blessing and a curse at times. It proves to have some dramatic message about changing the outcome, but it allows to many moments to float by with witty banter and not enough hard hitting social views.

Really well written and fun that manages to express important sentiments about race and life. The dialogue is so good and interesting, the music is awesome, it's also really well shot. The movie keeps a really uplifting and fun spirit, even when dark things are happening on screen. Sure, it gets a little gimmicky with it's mention of things like"Waze", "Find My iPhone", and "Bitcoin" but that's what people talk about & it's important to make it reflect the time it's set in.

Dope (2015) for sure! Mashing the days hip hop was good with the modern day drug dealing with a positive touch. Perhaps a little too positive. All the hot diggity dames, cool style and uplifting black(ish) message. Very few hard edges, but with comedy that'll reach an wider audience. Maybe I'm too pessimistic to really appreciate it's vanilla ending.

This film is... well, dope! It was a real surprise to me. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like this, but it took me back to the 90's with Malcom's love for 90's Hip-hop and the whole 90's style. His friends were really funny, especially the girl, who kept getting confused as being a boy. The situations that the group get into were really funny and I learned more about bitcoin in this movie than I've known my whole life...

One of the rare movies that sells you from minute one, then never overstays its welcome by wearing out too quickly by giving away its bag of tricks. it also does a great job masking its fairly conventional plot with some great comedic editing and a (hopefully) star-making performance from Shameik Moore.

This movie is loads of fun, well-acted, fast-paced, and cleverly written. Dope is aware of all the tropes teen movies and comedy/thrillers tend to follow, and it doesn't dodge them so much as recalibrate them to be thoughtful and very self-aware in as unpretentious of a way as possible. Everyone (even A$AP Rocky) is well-cast here and they all play their roles so believably well. Not only that, but it tackles issues of race and poverty more thoughtfully/powerfully than most typical dramas do.

While I did enjoy the movie, I can't really say that about the message. It was not good that they trivialized their drug dealing, despite presenting it as no choice option. Also, a few of the characters were rather unconvincing. Still it was entertaining & engaging. I liked the three nerdy musketeers & I think they could have made much better use of the characters. There was a spark of something really good here, but it's also bogged down a bit with shortcomings. Also, I didn't like the end.

Malcolm (Shameik Moore), a high school senior in the L.A. ghetto working to get into Harvard, finds himself stuck with a vast quantity of MDMA--and disposes of it in a very modern way. Oh, and he also must deal with being a 90s hip-hop geek, and win the girl (Zoe Kravitz) before it's all over. There are a lot of laughs and a lot of wit and invention on display, but it loses steam in the second half, doesn't develop its characters quite enough, and its morality may raise a few eyebrows.

Enjoyable coming of ager has enough freshness and vitality in its performances (and specific locale) to help forget that there’s not a great deal new going on here; at its best when just sitting back and observing these characters freewheel their way through day to day life and suffers somewhat whenever it shifts to a more concrete (and overly familiar) gang violence subplot. Attempt at a finale “message” is also a miscalculation, trying to wrap a bow around a film that doesn’t wear one easily.

The movie started off feeling very fresh and packed with tons of style and youthful confidence, both in front of and behind the camera. Beneath this facade it wasn't quite so special - just a run-of-the-mill good-guy-mixed-up-with-gangs / drug caper movie. I've seen better. The director has the skills to craft a good short sequence, but this doesn't translate to feature-length success without a stronger script. I found the lead character's habit of acting very confused and hesitant annoying too.

An incredibly original movie that's mostly style over substance. A great premise, but the screenplay is a bit sloppy and the characterization is not much more than cliched stereotypes. Nothing to really complain or celebrate about the acting. This movie survives because of it's incredible vibe. Everything from the music choices to the art direction is on point and does a great job of elevating all of the film's lesser components to a higher level.

Dope is an awkward mix of teen comedy and urban drama that hammers home its simplistic social message to the point of absurdity. The view of teenage life seems strangely inauthentic, which is odd given the creative team behind it. The drug dealing plotline is contrived and treated both seriously and frivolousy, highlighting the tonal confusion. It would be refreshing to see an American film about young minorities that doesn't impose a restrictive framework on them. Dope isn't that film.

Dope begins by providing three different definitions of dope. Initially, that seems like an overly cutesy introduction, but in retrospect it's something like a statement of purpose, a signal that the film is about ambiguously straddling multiple identities, about transgressing conventional classifications. I suppose, as a result, that it's disappointing that it largely adheres to what's expected, but as something of a post-post-racial generational mission statement, it's kind of interesting.

It was an interesting movie. It's a coming of age story that looks at race and the double standards that are often in play. It has some very timely messages for today, but the story itself falls into one of those everything that goes wrong can go wrong for no real good reason. That and the reason for all this? Trying to impress a girl who isn't even in most of the movie. The characters just seemed a bit underdeveloped, the lesson of the movie a bit inconsistent, and it may not age the best.

An odd movie. It had the plot of a bad teen comedy, but presented it as more of a drama. It had a good message, but was less than subtle in presenting it. It had some good laughs, but they undermined the drama. What really stood out was the style, though. All in all, an interesting movie that feels like it never found its place, but original nonetheless.

Despite a fresh-feeling setting, nice-looking cinematography, active editing, great music, and a trio of likeable protagonists, the film struggles to connect in a solid way up until Malcolm's dramatic gun draw, thanks to some messy writing that half-hazardly breezes through a high school partying plot and too often feels try-hard with its humour. A unique fourth-wall-breaking "moral of the story" hits home though, and re-frames the film's brazen Superbad-esque story in a thought-provoking way.

I hardly found it funny at all in the "Haha, I'm laughing at these jokes!" sense, but I had a good enough time with its cool, funky look and vibe and pacing and found Malcolm a likable hero. It actually gets weaker the more it gets into its plot as the movie rolls into the third act. But overall enjoyable. If you loves you some A-cup titties, this cute skinny black girl spends like three minutes topless in the middle of the movie. I'd put it about even with Famuyiwa's similar 90s film The Wood.

It took just under two hours to see this movie. To get to know it. And while it, like Malcolm, is a multifaceted creation, most of its facets are downright raw and filthy. We see sex and violence. We hear obscene language. We watch this world's sense of morality implode, leaving us very little to pull from the ashes.
If one's upbringing shouldn't fully define a person, then neither can one solid message redeem Dope. (pluggedin.com)
