I loved the first movie, and this one's pretty damn good, too. The characters, both old and new, are great, and there's plenty of satire and heart to keep things fresh. Far from a lazy rehash, this is a fun and inventive continuation of the story.

Shrek 2 is a great sequel to a very good film. It improves on one simple thing from the original, the consistency to its tone, and that makes a world of difference. Everything works slightly better than it did in the first film, and instead of a tonal shift, all of the elements blend together to create a wonderful experience. That is done without sacrificing a simple and straightforward narrative. Shrek was taken and made better. This is a sequel done right.

I'm not a huge fan of the Shrek franchise. But in this film and this film alone, it manages to find its footing as a successful satire and nails it, pretty much. I go against the grain here, but THIS is the movie in the Shrek franchise that I found the most original.

Shrek 2 is definitely the best of the sequels and it baffles me why it receives so much negative criticism. It certainly lacks the freshness of its predecessor. But otherwise the humour still caters for all and adults will appreciate the pop culture references and soundtrack. The characters remain as loveable as ever. Myers, Murphy & Diaz are all once again on top form and Banderas, Cleese, Saunders & Everett are all worthy additions. Shrek 2 is thoroughly enjoyable and criminally underrated.

Re-watching it now, it's weird how much this movie screams 'early-to-mid 2000s family blockbuster'. Its a good film, but unfortunately the humor style it employs was so successful that just about every mainstream animated film since has tried to copy it, making it seem unoriginal and annoying now. A shame, because this really is a solid family film. There's something for every age group.

A smart and funny continuation of the Shrek franchise. Eddie Murphy as Donkey is still hilarious and Antonio Banderas as Puss In Boots is a great addition to the cast. The final forty minutes charges along with great panache and adventure. I love Jennifer Saunders, but she could have been given more to do with the Fairy Godmother role . . . or at least better songs to sing.

This movie is way more funny than it has any right to be. I love the biting satire of the Shrek movies, but they are legitimately hilarious, a little daring, and really well acted and directed. Sure, the themes and freshness of the first movie aren’t so present here, but it’s still a damn good time. I love it even more than the first.

It's a pretty delightful sequel all things considered. I wouldn't say it's tops the first one, but it stands in it's own merits, and it's synopsis is something that I'm sure older kids and adults can relate to and convey in some form. It's funny, charming, and has a purpose of existing. You see a lot of animated films, especially sequels, that don't really have a reason for existing (Emoji movie comes to mind) aside from making money. I appreciate that this went for something.

Shrek 2 is a monumental success. Everything which was good about the original is both celebrated and subverted. Leading to not only a rare sequel better than the original, but something which truly defines what a sequel should be in ways most follow ups only dream of. Not to mention the film is hysterically funny.

Puss in Boots is a strong addition to the cast and the novelty of the human Shrek sequence of the film is enjoyable. The Shrek / Fiona romance drama stuff felt a bit like reheated leftovers from the first film and there were bits I found Donkey as annoying as Shrek did. Animation has improved over three years, naturally. Giant Gingerbread Man sequence pretty funny. A respectable second installment.

Shrek and Fiona go to meet Fiona's parents and it goes about as expected. What results though is a fun, pop culture referenced adventure that introduces some new characters. While I like Puss in Boots, I really thought the idea of a Fairy Godmother who worked kind of like a mafia boss was the real stroke of genius here.

I preferred it to the original, simply due to PiB. Now there were 2 likeable characters in the film. But the drama felt needlessly contrived & the whole franchise seems to target the same crowd as the Simpsons, except looping in Republicans. However, unlike the Simpsons, one gets the feeling they're supposed to root for the "heroes". The heroes are really pretty trashy, though, and the flick seems proud of it in a very Yeehaw Praise the Lord & Pass the Ammo / Friends in Low Places kind of way.

Shrek 2 continues the Shrek storyline and it tells a simple, at times, interesting story. Much of the cast returns in this trip back to Far Far Away, Princess Fiona's hometown. The ogres are going to meet Fiona's parents to have their union blessed. Antonio Banderas' Puss in Boots is the biggest addition to the cast along with Jennifer Saunders' Fairy Godmother but it's easy to tell that Puss in Boots is charged with moving the series forward. It was a cute movie but not as good as the OG.

Shrek 2 is the Empire Strikes Back of the Shrek franchise. Shrek had some interesting themes going on, but ultimately didn't cash them in. Shrek 2 takes these themes and faces them head-on. Changing Shrek into human-Shrek is a genius move, and it really pays off by the end. Also, it's is very funny. Puss in Boots balances out the cast perfectly. But have to admit: it's been two days since watching the movie, and I barely remember any of it. Ah, who cares. Empires Strikes Back of the franchise.

While not being terrible, it takes the worst aspects of the original and tries to stretch them into a full film. Diaz has a larger role and she was the weakest aspect of the first film. It also double- and triples-down on the pop-culture references with only occasional success. Maybe it was just my hope that this would play more into the satirical aspects of the original.

The fart jokes and pop song performances feel a little stale this time around, but there's still plenty of chuckles to be had in the sly one-liners ("You still look like an ass to me"), the dramatic Donkey ("I'm melting!"; "I am trotting!"), and cutesy medieval-modern culture mash-ups (see the Medieval drive-thru). The story is a little simplistic but presents with frankness the mature themes of identity and insecurity as they relate to the central couple. Stay tuned for Waits' musical cameo.

While it might not be as "fresh" as the original, the sequel beats Shrek in every other aspect. The humor, animation, characters, writing, have gone up in a great level.
