The animation is pretty creative, but the story, and particularly its lead character, just isn't very endearing. Add in the pretty lengthy and tedious live action parts with horrible character design and the whole thing didn't work for me.

Henry Selick brings the Roald Dahl story to life with vivid and beautiful stop-motion animation. The story is marvelous of course, Dahl takes care of that, though it doesn't stretch very far: the movie runs a mere 79mins, never threatening to outstay its welcome. In the end you're probably better off reading the book, but Selick's animation is so wonderfully stylish that it makes for a worthwhile viewing experience.

I loved this book. Not so much the movie. But has anyone else noticed that James looks just like that Freddie kid from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"? Kind of eerie, right?

Charming and enjoyable Dahl adaptation sands off some of the "Spikier" aspects of the original novel (like most), and turns the peach inhabitants into genial fairytale like creatures, but it's still a lot of fun, with Lumley and Margolyes particularly, nastily good as the rotten aunts (I wish their fate had more closely matched with the book!) Dated stop-motion animation works quite well and is a better fit for this than practical live action or traditional animation.

It's less fun than reading the book, and it feels like it's taking just as long. The animation is interesting and most of the voicework is good, but the movie lacks the richness that was found in the pages of the book. Crap!

James and the Giant Peach was one of those films growing up that I watched many times but it could never keep my interest. The stop motion animation is wonderful and the characters are brilliantly brought to life with lots of colour and vibrance. And the voice work is good throughout also. But this films downfall is the underwhelming live-action segments. And it's these scenes that always took me out of the experience.

Not as magical as I remember, but that's to be expected I suppose. The live-action stuff pisses me off but the animation is of the same impeccable quality you've come to expect from a Selick flick. Paul Terry is such an annoying little shit.

I used to watch this all the time when I was younger. The shark robot used to scare me. Unfortunately it lost a lot of the magic watching it as an adult. It was still fun, and nostalgic, but there are so many stupid moments in it. The live action scenes pretend like they are animated and it doesn't really work that well. I also can't tell if it's supposed to be a dream, or just a fantasy movie. The whole thing just seems like a dream. The claymation was all right, but nothing spectacular.

The animation is great, but to my disappointment the feel of Dahl in my head seems to have a habit of coming out differently on the screen (Re: Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory). This isn't such a bad attempt and certainly makes an enjoyable kids movie, but whatever richness was in Dahl's writing seems to escape the movie makers.

Oh dear Lord, this is unpleasant! The songs are shit. Much of the visuals are grotesque to the point of eye-torture. Aunt Spiker is so hideous, the old lady from The Shining looks average to me now. Susan Sarandon's awful (French?) accent is like nails on a chalkboard. But JAMES! James has the most punchable face and not to be Satan, but his speech impediment drove me up the wall. Gah! I saw it when I was a kid, and tried to rewatch it now. I've been through 45 minutes. Life is too short.

When this movie came out James and the Giant Peach was already my favorite book so I was stoked, and this movie didn't disappoint, although I'm not sure the point of making James a human for some of it and a puppet for others. Just choose one. Richard Dreyfuss did a good job at playing the Centipede, one of the coolest characters. Roald Dahl's best book.

This combines about everything I hate: an insufferable kid protagonist, some of the cheapest looking and terribly acted live-action scenes ever put to film, Burton's typical gross fairy tale style, stop motion animation that makes everything look like plastic (plus early and extremely shitty CGI) - and not even the songs are good.

The villainous aunts and the comical-sidekick animals are well within the traditions of Disney animation, but the entire thing is so unremittingly weird and bizarre that no single thing in it can stand out as distinctly weird or bizarre. A couple of possible highlights: the moment when the night lights of Manhattan appear through an opening in the clouds, and the moment immediately thereafter when a fast-closing storm cloud unleashes the Great Rhinoceros of Death.

I really like how dark this children's film gets at times but the whole product is fairly uneven. Even though I am normally not a fan of stop-motion animation, it works decently well here in the story. The biggest problem is the story which only moves occasionally and often stalls. Overall, this is a fine adaptation and a solid flick.

Love the dirty, creepy, and very weird Selick vibe that goes on in the titular fruit, but the narrative just doesn't really hold up to a feature length film. The songs feel of filler to nudge this past an hour. Still, great voice performances in something that probably filled more than a few nightmares.
