What is with movies and having characters throw entire TV dinners box and all into a microwave and why is Roman Polanski not in jail.

It drags in a number of places and the story has too few hitches, everything runs way too smoothly to maintain the level of suspense Polanski was going for. On the plus side, the camerawork was great, the music was great and Johnny Depp was in it!

Did anyone else notice Johnny Depp's Paris walking music is directly lifted from the Ghostbusters score?

The story is ultimately unfulfilling, but it has some of that good ol' Rosemary's Baby-charm to entertain Polanski fans. Kudos for trying to make a horror-movie about book-geeks, too bad some of it is so clunkily handled: 6-6-6 being the code to a collection of devilish texts. No, really?

Not too bad. Parts of the film are laughably ridiculous, like the final sex scene (I cracked up at the girl's face).

Ridiculous payoff after a build-up that never rises itself above being average. Depp roles usually leave me feeling mixed [this is no different] but he offers about the only entertainment here.

Excellent, one of Johnny Depp's best performances, Roman Polanski directs this dark tale about a ruthless antique book detective trying to track down a book rumored to grant an audience with Satan.

So he has sex with some demon-woman and then...? Walks into Hell? Dies? Is given incredible power and rules on Earth? Decides to see if Tim Burton's doing another movie with a pale, brooding male lead?

It must have sounded like a promotional piece of cake: the director of Rosemary's Baby returning to the diocese of devil worship. But no one could accuse Polanski of crass capitalization, much less crass capitalism. This is not an End of Days. It is an anti-End of Days, almost (if you will) a Return to the Good Old Days, holding special effects at bay -- insofar as is still humanly possible -- and following the flatfooted course of a classical detective story.

Probably Polanski's worst film. There is virtually nothing here to admire.

Nice to watch while hungover or falling asleep as it's the movie version of valium.

When "The Ninth Gate" was coming out, Polanski visited the Danish Film School. In front of an audience he was asked: "Why does witchcraft play a part in so many of your movies?" Polanski interrupted: "Wait! Other than Rosemary's Baby, name me ONE of my other movies that is about whichcraft." The presenter couldn't. The rest of the time, Polanski was being cross like a child without candy. My guess is, he wasn't cross because of the lame interviewing, but because he knew his new movie SUCKED.

Johnny Depp is easily the best part of this film about Satanic rare books being authenticated that ends so confusingly and laughably that it takes an alright experience down to a poor one.

A poorly written crock of shit. Many eye-rolling moments scattered throughout, but the basic premise is handled with complete disregard for the intellectual intensity that is the pseudo-subject. I'm not satisfied that enough books were read in the making of this film.

Uncertain of what genre it wants to be with the direction and performances of a dark thriller but the music and production value of a whimsical adventure film.
