I was probably only about a third the way through before I figured out where this was going, and sure the execution is original, it's also sort of a gimmick, and it definitely ties into the movie in a fitting way. But the issue is that by being forced to go down different alternative paths, this movie begins to feel transient and none of the endings really leave an impression. Also, I'll add that Whitehead was really starting to irritate me by about 20 minutes in.

Boy, they sure loved talking about how your choices don't matter. And they loved demonstrating it through the interactive mechanics. But boy they sure didn't love giving us characters worth giving a damn about! The choice gimmick ends up being the only attraction here, and without a way to jump around (e.g. reloading a save or flipping back some pages) then even that quickly descends into tedium. Could be a good sign of things to come, but it doesn't work on its own.

Pushes you to choose the tragic and more brutal option. You either end up killing your father, going insane, or becoming a successful game designer. How does this contain any "critical" sensitivity towards the current reality? It reproduces the symbolic order's propensity for violence, madness, and all kinds of excesses, and the self-conscious elements are just too overt and superficial. Plus, the scenario is just poorly constructed. They constantly send you back to your previous choice.

The choose-your-own-adventure is mildly interesting at first, and at least unique, but by the end I was just desperate to achieve some kind of resolution. Ironically, the audience involvement factor ultimately distanced me from the story, which was pretty gimmicky anyway, though there were brief moments when the concept was compelling.

I've played enough 'Telltale' games to know that the bar is set fairly low when it comes to your choices mattering in modern interactive entertainment, that's why Bandersnatch pleasantly surprised me. Here is an experience that is entirely self aware in how much choice it gives you and what type of people are going to play it and this meta approach is frequently amusing (e.g. The 'Netflix' choice!). Possibly best watched with at least one other person so you can argue how to torture the lead!

There's a comforting irony to how Black Mirror has spent 4 seasons trying to scare us with what technology can do, and now Netflix can't even get the movie to work on the most common platforms. Choosing (heh) to watch a torrented version without being part of the gimmick hammers home that this is basically a British Donnie Darko where the writer *really* wants there to be a downer ending despite promising control. Not bad, but hardly more revolutionary than any other CYOA game.

A great concept, poor execution. I really think they could have pulled this off if they made slightly different choices. For example, when I reached an "ending" in the narrative, I was given the option to go back and replay the game from some set point. But this made it feel like I hadn't reached an end, and that I had made mistakes in my choices, and then, going back and replaying content to get to different results made it seem like there was no finality to my decisions. Bleh.

As soon as you realise the 'choices' are nothing more than a gimmick you switch off, and considering this is one of the dullest Black Mirrors out there, it becomes tough to regain your focus. Even Poulter and Chabuds can't distract from the boring story, and eventually you're just glad it's all over. The interactive element is an interesting idea but seemed nowhere near realised here, although I have no interest in going back through this again to find out.

Very well done pick a path adventure book turned film. What seems like novelty, is handled greatly by the very apt writer/creator Charlie Brooker. A killer soundtrack and 10 different endings make this a must watch for any cinephile. Oh yeah...definitely choose the "Netflix" option when it appears. Meta at it's finest!

Bold in ambition, but mediocre in execution. Despite all the various choices available, the film (game?) constantly feels like it's just shepherding you in a very specific direction anyways, making the interactivity feel like much more of a gimmick than a valuable story-telling device. The theme of the futility of choice has already been better explored in other games (see Telltale's Walking Dead) and still done in a way where your choices carry moral weight and importance, despite the futility.

Such a unique concept and just as entertaining as expected. At least for the first few runs. I feel like it gets a little too messy and repetitive after a few endings, so much so that you don't really want to find the rest of the endings. But despite that it's still a fun experience and the cast does a great job.

Oh dear. I absolutely loved the story as the character's reality begins to unravel but the programme ended for me with a series of disappointing dead ends that threw me back into the middle of different storylines. Frustrated, I looked up where I should have gone only to find I had watched all the possible endings. Great idea badly executed. Two stars.

This interactive storytelling experiment has a programmer going mad as he's making a video game. He's convinced he's being forced against his will to do horrible things and he is. He's being forced by us. The interactivity implicates us in the dreadful things happening on the screen. This is fourth wall breaking taken to the next level, allowing us to reach inside the screen and do our worst. Really frightening.

Illusions of free will abound, there is no choice that leads Stefan Butler to the success he is searching for without having to pay the ultimate price. It was well acted, the choices varied from kinda important, not important at all and eerie and bizarre. It was a unique experience. One that I definitely see becoming more of a trend. Each ending was slightly different and the choices leading up to it were interesting. A definite recommend if you have the time.

It's not that you can really choose your way to different endings so much as you can repeatedly fail and need to revisit your choices to get where you want to go. In the process, it becomes a meta-commentary on video games as well as a joyously self-referential bit of satire. It's not amazing, but it's nice when something this ambitious manages to succeed.

What the fuck was that? I can't say that I didn't feel immensely empowered when I chose Sugar Puffs over Frosties and the character actually did it, but then there were so many dead ends to take any joy out of it. Plus the continuous "somebody is controlling me" jokes got old really fast. Didn't finish. Or did I? Didn't even become clear.

There's no comparison to a story based video game. This is just click left or right, disrupting the movie every so often. This is a big miss by Netflix. The worst acting I've seen in a long, long while. Slow, uninvolved and uninteresting storylines that have terrible pacing and no payoff.

W3E1P2S0V1M1A1R2. Almost all points solely for the originality of it and the future possibilities it creates. But the absence of a navigable menu for playing around with your choices is just bonkers. Instead, unless I was just doing it wrong, it seems to force you after your first ending to keep going back to points it chooses for you, to explore alternate endings, until you just get bored and turn it off (or presumably, spend hours and hours going down each rabbit hole).

I'll admit I was biased going in; the interactive choose-your-own-adventure gimmick sounded like a dumb idea to me. However, I was still expecting to really enjoy the story. Charlie Brooker always has great story ideas, if not always the best execution. The Black Mirror brand surely would deliver, right? I'm sad to say no, this time it let me down hard. Harder than any other single episode in the series. The story in Bandersnatch was just awful, slow, and boring. 100% style/form over substance.

Colin Ritman + the Netflix option = fresh, hilarious, and appreciated. As for the whole, I wanted more commentary that came to some cohesive head, even if that point is that there is no singular point/trajectory. Menial Retcon wrote: Starts out strong but then doesn't go anywhere- I thought an overarching narrative would emerge where the main character would transcend all the branchings. There are touches of that, but more is needed."

Every year, 'Black Mirror' out of 4-5 episodes, one is amazing, 1 is bad and the others are average. This one is a bad one. The 'interactive' concept was a very good idea, but they have to work it out in future releases. Unfortunately, the script wasn't clear and flawless, the characters were annoying and the direction 'confusing', so for me, it was a bad moment for the 'Black Mirror'

Great idea, bad execution. Black Mirror is a series about scary dystopian ideas that are told in a visually impressive way. They are like sci-fi novellas, if you scrutinize the plot there are a ton of holes, but it's fun to watch and ponder nonetheless. This one was too gimmicky and the story was too disjointed. Nothing to think about afterwards.

03 Jan 2019
The medium is the message - unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be more of a message than that. Say what you want about the illusion of choice; Black Mirror seems to have favored the method of storytelling and the story itself. No matter what choice I made, it left me ultimately unsatisfied... maybe that is the point.

do you like conspiracies? do you think your wants and preferences are tracked, evaluated and reverse-fed to you by economic interests? well, then act out your very own super-paranoid adventure right now! it's all about you! you get to decide everything! so...sugarpuffs or kellog's frosties?
02 Jan 2019
Worst episode ever. Even worse than Waldo which is a huge accomplishment. It's like a maze you can't find the way out of. I get their intention. I really do. A slap in our faces: "You think you are making the choices? No we are." But as a viewer, don't you think we deserve to enjoy ourselves a little bit more? It got so exhausting after a point, I stopped watching. I don't think I'll ever watch again. Thank you, next.

Should get props for trying something new, but the end result is just kind of boring. The whole choice-gimmick gets old really fast and the story is just not interesting enough to make going through the same scenes again and again anything else than irritating. Some of the endings are fun and always a plus when a movie tries to tackle free will.

On first viewing, I loved this. Great and engaging story with quite a few choices. When trying to go back and get different scenes and endings however, it’s pretty repetitive. Probably best to simply rewatch it a month or two later to get a different experience or something. A bit reminiscent of Donnie Darko and The Butterfly Effect, both of which I loved.

Cool concept with the ideal setting for it. It's definetely more of a game than a film though. I guess they finally found a way to stop movie piracy...for now :D Too bad many decisions lead to a dead end. So while there are multiple endings it seems only one of them is the "right" one.

The choose-your-own-adventure gimmick is used quite well, in a sense. [SPOILERS.] Just as you begin to get frustrated because your choices mostly seem to not matter, you realize that this actually puts you in the proper mindset of the main character who feels powerless in this world. That being said, I do hope the next experiment with an interactive story feels like your choices have a greater impact on the story. Here, the consequences of your choices only seem to matter toward the "end".
