In The Name Of The Father is a fantastic film, that grips you unlike most films do. Day-Lewis and Postlethwaite are absolutely stellar in this. As far as the story goes, it is really heartbreaking. The fact that it is based on truth is just incredible and yet disturbing to think about and that fact truly increases the films emotional level and brings out the sensitive side of you instantaneously. Definitely worth a look.

Incredible and unbelievable true story. Luckily those people did not get the death penalty but 15 years in prison is bad enough. Death penalty should be forbidden in every country. There are always innocent people in jale.

Sheridan, possibly the finest storyteller at the moment, thankfully avoids feeding the audience a load of bull. DDL gives a great performance, bottling his anger to protect his family, carrying the film until its gratifying finale. Now that I think of it, "Hunger" feels like a complete rip-off of this film!

Sheridan's direction is too often heavy-handed, a shame because the story is more than strong enough to carry its own weight. Similarly in need of being dialed back a bit is Daniel Day-Lewis' performance which is both impressive, heavily mannered and in some scenes indulgent (that could have easily been remedied in the editing room). Pete Postlethwaite anchors the film.

Fantastic both as a courtroom and procedural fight against injustice, and as a story of personal growth. What's truly outstanding, beyond the bravado performances delivered by DDL and Postlethwaite, is how it conveys the Gerry's emotional states, from the joy of youth, to the terror of imprisonment, to the hardened satisfaction of being found innocence.

This is clearly an excellent movie. Daniel Day-Lewis may just be the best actor of the last 25 years, and though this is nowhere near his best performance, his talent shines through at the highest level. Really well done in most technical respects and a very engaging plot, In the Name of the Father is simply a great movie all around.

in the name of the father is a very subtle, no nonsense 90s drama which retains its palatable status despite being heavily political. its strength. however doesn't come from its great performances or masterful directing, it comes from the veracity of the story and its sheer madness. back from a time directors bothered to make movies that matter, this movie is a gem, albeit a heartbreaking one.

The fact that this is based on a true story is highly disturbing and Jim Sheridan's storytelling abilities ironically bring justice to the source material. I was emotionally involved that I felt powerless to a movie released 16 years ago. Daniel Day-Lewis and Pete Postlethwaite performances especially added to the excellence.

Day-Lewis is young, charismatic and angry, while Postlethwaite provides a bumbling dignity as a principled man who's hope and faith appear at first glance unsuited to surviving the crossfire the pair find themselves. The film follows Gerry's course from self-destructive fury to salvation but is let down by a poorly paced middle third and slightly simple moralising, failing to truly examine the magnitude of the injustice.

Fantastic acting from Day-Lewis makes this a good movie, but the other aspects keep it from being amazing. Emma Thompson's character almost seems like an afterthought, even though she should be a bit more prominent. Bono's soundtrack also bothered me through most of the movie. While it's not perfect, definitely see this movie. See it for Day-Lewis' performace, see it for Postlethwaite, and see it to learn about Conlon and his story.

Lmao at the one mini review below that’s just “Emma Thompson is a great actor” in a movie she’s in for like 15 minutes where DDL acting his heart out for 2 hours. This dude eats at a 5 star restaurant and is like “my soda was good”

This film apparently takes numerous liberties with the truth and some of them are real whoppers. However, it would appear that most of them are for purely dramatic reasons and don't affect the general "truthiness" of the story. And it's a compelling story of gross injustice, with strong performances by Postlethwaite and Day-Lewis. I didn't have the emotional response that I think the film was driving at but I was quite engaged throughout. Nothing too special, but a pretty good watch.

One of the best movies I've ever seen, and it's based on a true story. A gripping account of the injustice served upon an Irish family when they are falsely accused of the Guilford pub bombing. One of the few movies I've watched multiple times. Danial Day-Lewis and Pete Postlethwaite head up a stellar cast.

I didn't really like this film. It seems to have a lot of critical praise, but I didn't see what was so great. I think Day-Lewis is a great actor, but here he was just melodramatic, along with Thompson. Thankfully, Postlethwaite was much more grounded. My main problem with the film was that I just didn't like the main character. We're obviously meant to feel sorry for him, but he was just such an idiot that I didn't care. The true story aspect kept me watching, but I didn't enjoy a lot of it.

Great, great, great film. Not something you could watch again and again but on the first viewing it will certainly blow you away. Everything about this film is of the highest caliber. While the triteness that comes from being a true story is still their, its pure quality outshines its weaknesses enough to make this film an easy recommendation to absolutely anyone.

Unusually well-made for a Jim Sheridan movie. For once I didn't feel like I had to put up with his clunky direction and script while I was enjoying the amazing acting. Hugely compelling, energetic, fascinating and sympathetic. Though it has its problems (the bad guys are never real, just sneering villains, the final court scene is very Hollywood, and some sequences are very clumsily chopped down for time) they didn't really bother me too much in the end.

Playing fast a loose with the facts definitely detracts from the overall experience, but it is a compelling and enjoyable watch nonetheless. Postlethwaite is good, but Day-Lewis is amazing.

Love! Just -- love, love, love. It's an incredible story all on it's own; add Daniel Day-Lewis and an incredibly touching Pete Posthelwaite into the mix and you just can't go wrong. Seen it half a dozen times and both the ending and the bit with the fire-lit papers dropping out of the jail cells still gets me teary-eyed. Every. Time.

A heavy, heartbreaking movie, plus it's very long/often slow, but this true story must be told! And what a job they did telling it. Day-Lewis is brilliant and Postlethwaite not too bad. Loved the 'hippy'-bit and was surprised when the real Drama began... pffff drama is an understatement. Anyway, go see it!

Vi esse filme diversas vezes durante os anos 90, me ajudou a moldar minha personalidade anarquista em ascensão, mas revendo hoje pude notar as diversas manipulações cinematográficas com a história do Gerry Collon, o que acaba comprometendo o filme de modo geral. De qualquer forma quem carrega o filme nas costas é o Day Lewis como sempre, poderia ter ganho o Oscar naquele ano também se não fosse a questão sócio política envolvendo a premia

a good film which captures the depressing reality that far too often when bad men do bad things the authorities, keen to be seen to get a result, will put absolutely anyone away for it - innocent or not. A real scandal of British justice. A powerful performance from Day-Lewis with decent support from Postlethwaite

What a powerful movie. Day-Lewis is obviously amazing, and Postlethwaite is such a good actor to play his father. It has some very intense and emotion-provoking scenes, like the interrogation scenes and the final verdict. I don't know much about the original story, so I can't know how well they stuck to the real events.

It's always a joy to see Pete Posthlethwaite. Daniel Day-Lewis is intense. I also liked Emma Thompson in this. The sad true story about am entire family convicted of crimes that none of them committed, and it took 15 years to set it right. Damn those filthy lying corrupt British cops and prosecutors who got away with their heinous crimes. This movie highlights the mentalities involved in the Irish uprising. I have to wonder why it took so long to find justice?

It's a long and unwieldy film that frequently loses focus, but is always compelling because of the performances of these three magnificent actors and the importance of the film's central message. When you tilt the balance of power too far and give police nearly unlimited powers, wild injustices happen.

As a fatherless son, it was impossible not to go into this and avoid holding back tears for an hour and a half. As a human being, Gerry Conlon's story is nothing short of captivating. Try not to fall in love with DDL in this, I dare you.

Good, if you're into courtrooms and prisons. Another fact-based issue drama. Not wildly entertaining, and certainly not one of the best films I've ever seen (so says imdb), but you could do worse. Still, it's so old fashioned and earnest that I wouldn't recommend it. Also, a lot of the Irish accents were difficult to understand. I missed about a quarter of the dialogue. It was a relief once the bad English guys got a chance in court to enunciate.
