As a young tot I would've been crucified if I brought my cockney accent on the road. Dick Van Dyke's performance is as close to not-black face as you can possibly get. Disgusting wave of nostalgia rewatching this.

Some films may equal, but will never surpass, the amazing "Jolly Holiday" sequence for pure joy and imaginative beauty. Whatever you say about Disney, this is his crowning achievement. A close look at the narrative shows this is more for adults to experience the joys of innocence and imagination - and really, we could all use a bit of that.

Fun musical and a high point for Disney in the 1960's, even if it’s a good 50 minutes too long. Special award to Dick Van Dyke for the worst accent in movie history.

It's too long (the painting escapade needed a trim) but overall a delight both humourous and heartwarming (see the kite-flying), with the practically perfect in every way Mary Poppins at the forefront: her mix of cheeky seriousness (see her back-and-forths with the uppity Mr. Banks) and serious cheekyness ("I never explain anything"), of mirthful magic and feigned matter-of-fact-ness ("I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about"), with tender heart and voice is singular and fantastic.

One of the best Disney live-action musicals. I even have a fondness for Van Dyke's horrendous accent. The mixture of live-action and animation is so well done that it still impresses today, and some of the musical numbers are fantastic. The downside is that the film peaks too early with the latter half dragging on a bit, especially when Andrews isn't on-screen to carry it. Still a great watch, and with some wry satirical digs unusual for a Disney production.

Thanks to fantastic performances from Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, brilliant choreography, and a story lacking a villain in favor of imagination and childhood, Mary Poppins has managed to hold its own decades after its prime.

Although a bit long, this justifiably famous Disney film combines brilliant animated sequences with a charming tale. The Sherman Brothers' songs are more hummable than usual, and the choreography is on a par with some of the best MGM musicals.

Embraces its own escapism and optimism so unabashedly. Full of iconic music and great special effects, with a little bit of surrealism. I love that no explanation is given for Mary's apparently supernatural abilities. My only complaint is that it peaks early, and the last half isn't as fun as the first. Specifically the animated sequence, which is one of the funniest, most delightful set pieces ever.

No, everyone in the world does not enjoy this film. I've always hated musicals, and this is not much of an exception, especially since it's about as gaudy and sickeningly sugar-sweet as they get. The fake trailer floating around out there is pretty great, though...

There's a lot to dislike about this movie; there are parts that feel painfully patriarchical and condescending, and it cheerfully whitewashes the deep awfulness of Victorian culture. But goshdarnit, Julie Andrews is *wonderful*, and if it idealizes the Victorians, it also idealizes having fun and being kind and bringing everybody to the party, and that's worth a *lot*.

While undeniably a beloved, iconic classic, it is difficult to understand why; the characters make little sense - the children aren't misbehaving brats, and Poppins herself is not a cheery liberator, but a rigid, rule-obsessed killjoy (Andrews does her best, especially while handling the admittedly tuneful score). Episodic screenplay spotlights segments which were no doubt technological breakthroughs (Bert's drawings) but bring a terminally overlong film to a screeching halt.

The movie is, in a word, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. It has a perfect sense of whimsy and wonder that has not been matched by any film to date. The visual effects, for its time, are splendid, and still manage to hold up 50 years later. Its perfectly cast, perfectly composed, and despite a strange financial subplot, manages to remain wonderfully merry.

I don't remember watching this as a kid, but as I watched it as a 31 year old I had weird flashbacks to certain scenes so I either saw parts of it or digested it through cultural osmosis. If I did watch it as a kid I realize why I never finished it because every scene feels like it's 10-15 minutes too long. Give me Sherry Bobbins any day of the week.

Mary Poppins is a dated film that runs a little too long but has just about enough charm & wit to be an enjoyable classic. Andrews is great, but she played the role better in The Sound of Music. The songs good. The humour works. The effects do look dated alongside some dubious dubbing for the musical numbers, and the fact that the film looks like it was shot on a stage set all detract a little from the experience. Not sure if I love or hate Van Dyke's accent.

Sporadically a very pleasant and effective entertainment for children of all ages, with plenty of brightness and charm including magic tricks, the mixing of live with cartoon adventures, and just plain fun. It suffers, however, from a wandering narrative in the second half (when Miss Poppins scarcely appears) and from Mr Van Dyke's really lamentable attempt at Cockney.

A musical that's a callback to the golden age of Hollywood. Not bad however and I remember liking it as a kid. On a recent rewatch I gave a higher rating. This is much better than I remember and the music is just timeless. Andrews and Van Dyke are a charming duet in their musical numbers. Although it's never really explained just what the hell Mary Poppins is exactly. She's some sort of witch for sure. J.K. Rowling obviously got lots of inspiration from this.

This is universally considered as a family classic, but apart from some neat effects and visuals, I wasn't really enjoying it that much. Well, this is like reviewing Gone with the Wind objectively! The first half of the film just brings a constant smile to your face, but the second half (of too long a film) drags a little. The reason being that Julie Andrews is not on screen nearly so much. She is simply luminous. The film suffers from several scenes that are unnecessary and a bit creepy (the mad uncle for example) or just a bit boring (bank scenes) but hey, this is a film that has stood the test of time and entertained millions

Starts of well, but soon I realised this was a 30 minute movie stretched out to over 2 hours through the use of long-winded, unimpressive song-and-dance numbers and animated sequences. The most important character, the Father, is so ridiculously patriarchal that his characterisation over the film comes as hardly any special revelation. Julie Andrews is hot, though.
