I can't think of a better example of pure Disney magic than this movie. If you hate it, you have no soul.

As a young tot I would've been crucified if I brought my cockney accent on the road. Dick Van Dyke's performance is as close to not-black face as you can possibly get. Disgusting wave of nostalgia rewatching this.

Some films may equal, but will never surpass, the amazing "Jolly Holiday" sequence for pure joy and imaginative beauty. Whatever you say about Disney, this is his crowning achievement. A close look at the narrative shows this is more for adults to experience the joys of innocence and imagination - and really, we could all use a bit of that.

Fun musical and a high point for Disney in the 1960's, even if it’s a good 50 minutes too long. Special award to Dick Van Dyke for the worst accent in movie history.

Old-fashioned and overzealous. But probably sweet and magical for kids who don't realize that these properties merely camouflage a dark cationary tale about the contagiousness of madness.

Although a bit long, this justifiably famous Disney film combines brilliant animated sequences with a charming tale. The Sherman Brothers' songs are more hummable than usual, and the choreography is on a par with some of the best MGM musicals.

One of the best movies ever made. And not just amongst the kids movies. Julie Andrews is so great, as well as Dyck van Dyke. The special effects are gorgeous, the soundtrack also. Must-see.

One of the best Disney live-action musicals. I even have a fondness for Van Dyke's horrendous accent. The mixture of live-action and animation is so well done that it still impresses today, and some of the musical numbers are fantastic. The downside is that the film peaks too early with the latter half dragging on a bit, especially when Andrews isn't on-screen to carry it. Still a great watch, and with some wry satirical digs unusual for a Disney production.

Dick Van Dyke is fantastic. The children are delightfull. Julie Andrews is 100% throughout. The songs are catchy. And the animated sequences are to die for. Just goes to show that it's always a jolly holiday with Mary.

It's too long (the painting escapade needed a trim) but overall a delight both humourous and heartwarming (see the kite-flying), with the practically perfect in every way Mary Poppins at the forefront: her mix of cheeky seriousness (see her back-and-forths with the uppity Mr. Banks) and serious cheekyness ("I never explain anything"), of mirthful magic and feigned matter-of-fact-ness ("I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about"), with tender heart and voice is singular and fantastic.

Thanks to fantastic performances from Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, brilliant choreography, and a story lacking a villain in favor of imagination and childhood, Mary Poppins has managed to hold its own decades after its prime.

My god, Dick Van Dyke's attempt at a cockney accent is the worst thing in the history of everything. Andrews is pleasant enough, but the music is mostly terrible.

Embraces its own escapism and optimism so unabashedly. Full of iconic music and great special effects, with a little bit of surrealism. I love that no explanation is given for Mary's apparently supernatural abilities. My only complaint is that it peaks early, and the last half isn't as fun as the first. Specifically the animated sequence, which is one of the funniest, most delightful set pieces ever.

No, everyone in the world does not enjoy this film. I've always hated musicals, and this is not much of an exception, especially since it's about as gaudy and sickeningly sugar-sweet as they get. The fake trailer floating around out there is pretty great, though...

While undeniably a beloved, iconic classic, it is difficult to understand why; the characters make little sense - the children aren't misbehaving brats, and Poppins herself is not a cheery liberator, but a rigid, rule-obsessed killjoy (Andrews does her best, especially while handling the admittedly tuneful score). Episodic screenplay spotlights segments which were no doubt technological breakthroughs (Bert's drawings) but bring a terminally overlong film to a screeching halt.

There's a lot to dislike about this movie; there are parts that feel painfully patriarchical and condescending, and it cheerfully whitewashes the deep awfulness of Victorian culture. But goshdarnit, Julie Andrews is *wonderful*, and if it idealizes the Victorians, it also idealizes having fun and being kind and bringing everybody to the party, and that's worth a *lot*.
