I've found I don't enjoy Buñuel's defiantly obtuse brand of surrealism very much (I prefer at least some method in my madness), but this short is definitely notable for its eye-opening place in film history. Worth a one-time watch.

It is rightfully famous for being the defining work of the surrealist movement, and for its memorable images. But as a short film, compared to almost any other piece in this medium, it is simply not very good. It's illogical, messy, abstruse, incoherent. Yes, there is imagery which can be decoded, but even this is stuffy and inconclusive. Buñuel proved later that surrealism and entertaining, thought-provoking films are not mutually exclusive. Here, he just made an inaccessible, tiring flop.

A combination of humor, lyricism, and a sense of internal logic (twisted and oblique though it may be). It just speaks to me the right way.

I'm not a fan of surrealism without purpose, I'm too desensitized for this to be shocking, and it hasn't aged all that well. Still, it works the brain and is a very unique experience and daring experiment.

Slicin' up eyeballs, I want you to know. There does appear to be some sort of internal logic to at least some of the images, but to be honest I gave up on trying to figure out anything at all within about 15 seconds. There's a woman and a man, there's a bunch of dreamlike images in non-chronological order, it's pretty cool, and that's all I need to know.

Even if you are not into surrealism and its sometimes funny but also very ruthless pictures - it is an important part of moving picture history. A "must-see".

Even though you can't make heads or tails of what the hell is going on, it's still compelling to watch to see where it will go next. From horror to thriller to romance and everything in between, this film is crammed full of the weirdest images that you can only imagine that the writer conjured up through his dreams after eating several tonnes of cheese. Fascinating.

Simply put, a masterpiece. I love every single shot and whenever I rewatch Buñuel's short I find new enjoyment in it. During the first few revisits I desperately wanted to make sense of it, hoping to unlock secrets and symbolisms, but now I find that the best way to experience it is to give myself away to its incredible, dreamlike moods and imagery. I think that - and the surrealism, obviously - is why I consider this such a perfect companion piece to Lynch's 'Lost Highway' and 'Mulholland Dr.'.

Experimental films really do not appeal to me that much but I can appreciate aspects of them. Obviously the eye ball sequence is very well known and almost taken for granted now. But when looked at a historical perspective it is a much more shocking and interesting scene, and from this same perspective the whole movie benefits.

When entire volumes of books are written attempting to make sense of your little 15-minute film and still no conclusions are reached, you know you have touched the pinnacle of surrealism. Visceral, disturbing, bizarre, provocative, and unyieldingly brilliant, the senselessness is methodically and expertly crafted. Overall, Un Chien Andalou is more an experience than a film, and one which - for better or worse - is impossible to forget

Difficult to rate, not just because of the lack of narrative and general incoherence, but because of the very familiarity of its most shocking images. Nevertheless, it is clear that this experimental investigation of symbols and the unconscious did succeed in making innovative use of limited cinematic means to construct some very memorable sequences, which do seem somehow to tap into or emerge from the "lower depths", so to speak.

The imagery had such an effect on me, that I cringe anytime I see a straight razor and a woman's face at the same time. Way ahead of its time, cinema as an art form is only starting to catch up. Don't let its arty reputation fool you though, this movie is wildly funny and entertaining-- provided you don't think too hard about it.

The following might save you some trouble: "To describe the movie is simply to list its shots, since there is no story line to link them. And yet we try to link them nevertheless. Countless analysts have applied Freudian, Marxist, and Jungian formulas to the film. Bunuel laughed at them all." -Ebert. The only problem here is that they might as well have said this, even though they did try to convey something, to mock those who mock those saying it does say something.

The surrealist fashion plate, jointly made by Dali and Buñuel (his first movie, and already several of his staples are on display: insects, donkeys, razor blades, comical clergymen). Very exciting for the dream logic that allows a portion of a scene to change course while the remainder of the scene continues on as before; undoubtedly less shocking now than it was in 1928, but still rude and hurtful; short enough and full enough to be viewed over and over without ever growing weary.

It's been done so much better since then... I had to sit through this during one of those bullshit extra credit film course in college. Its pretentiousness is enhanced by its obvious age reflected in the b&w film and the antiquated music. I already find most black and white films difficult to watch: this one was made doubly so because of its incoherence. Points for originality, but negative points for making 15 minutes seem like a lot longer (and not in a good way).

a classic experimental film. in terms of evoking emotion in me as a viewer though, it doesn't go very far, what with the absence of substantial narrative and all. to be fair though, there are some creepy moments that send chills down my spine, as well as some pretty hilarious ones (unintentionally so, probably). what fascinates me most about this film is that it actually was made in the 1920s and it definitely does feel like opening a time capsule or stepping into the past.

Although it is much easier to avoid mistakes in a 16 minute clip as opposed to a full feature film, Bunuel accomplishes every thing he set out to do in this film, nothing. His surrealist mentality allowed him to take a bunch of random absurd shots and make it work.
