It's Super 8 and E.T. if everything worked correctly and it had a John Carpenter score. In other words if you lived in the early 80's, it's a dream come true. It doesn't bash you over the head with it, other than the aforementioned score and the "Stephen King novel font", it really is fairly timeless. I won't spoil any of the story, but its fairly simple, somewhat familiar but portrayed almost flawlessly. Excellent stuff. EDIT - goes downhill after season 1, but am still along for the ride.

Nothing more than a good homage to 80's kiddy sci-fi films. The mythology of the alien was inconsistent at best and completely contradictory at worst. I also got the sense that this could easily have been a 2-hr feature rather than a Netflix series. I see no reason for another season.

I only wanted to watch one episode to get a feel of the show, ended up binge watching for 8 hours. This show is good, real good. The kind of throwback good that's missing in most modern shows. That certain element that most stuff lacks is abundant here. What am I referring to? Heart, Soul,...call it what you will, the characters are endearing, the story is interesting and you know the people involved cared about the final product more than the paycheck they received. It's E.T. meets Stephen King.

It takes a lot for me to commit to a series rather than a shorter movie, but Stranger Things dragged me in from the second it started. With fantastic child acting, strong adult leads, a captivating 80's aesthetic, a tight Stephen King-ish story, an emotional ending, and some of the best direction and cinematography on television, Stranger Things checked all my boxes for a show that's strangely perfect.

Stranger Things is what 'Super 8' wanted and failed to be, and more. Heavily inspired by Stephen King (who has since given his blessing on social media), but taking something from a number of 80s sources, ST plays more like an 8 hr film rather than a tv series. The kids acting and dialogue are both surprisingly strong and they carry the series wonderfully. While it may not be note perfect it's a thoroughly enjoyable binge watch for fans of 80s style supernatural mystery/horror.

A mashup of dozens of '80s movie tropes that nevertheless feels fresh and fun, effectively capturing a tone that's been sorely missing from pop culture since that time. EDIT: Each season is sillier and less scary than the one before, but it remains an enjoyable show.

The Duffers love the Eighties, but they can't write, making this one very long love letter indeed. The underdeveloped characters and uninspired ideas would never win awards (although someone must have told Ryder that she could cry her way to the Emmys), but it could have been a Meh-ish 'Super 9', had it stuck to a movie format that the plot affords. At eight one hour episodes, three of which are spent running and screaming, it might steal from the classics, but there is no Spielberg magic here.

Some of the child actors are really annoying, people often behave nonsensically, and the last episode is a major letdown with endless flashing and CGI snow. The story goes into territory that the writers aren't capable of writing realistic character reactions for. It had some good moments but I would not recommend it.

Legend has it that when the Wachowski people had a meeting with the money people, they showed them Ghost in the Shell and said: "We wanna do this". I wonder if the Duffer people had an 80's movie-marathon at a similar meeting? It ticks off all the boxes of what 12 year old me wanted in fiction and quite a lot of what 30-something me still wants to see. Sure, it's not a bonafide 80's mix tape but more of Spotify playlist with young people playing music that sounds like yesteyear. But I'll take it

It's gotten lots of ET comparisons. Personally, I'd call it 1 part ET, 1 part Firefly, and 1 part X-Files. A great mix of sci-fi, conspiracy, fantasy, horror, mystery, and childhood adventure. It doesn't do anything new per se, but blends things together in a fun and unique way. There were about half a dozen moments that felt overly cliche or convenient. I hope this is either a 1-off or further seasons are different stories with different actors, it would be a disservice to just rinse and repeat

Whoever the Duffer Brothers are, I wish to convey my heartfelt appreciation for this AMAZING show. It is truly an homage to all the great nostalgic movies from the 80's, we all dear so much. ST captivated me from start to finish - even the ending is fairly well rapped up with a few loose threads left hanging, with a promise for potential follow on seasons but the story is quite satisfyingly rapped up by the end. TRUST ME - you'll never look at Christmas lights the same way again!!?

Addictive as hell. The kids are awesome. Winona Ryder is awesome. David "Hop" Harbour is awesome. And the way the show lovingly turns many of the films and stories that I grew up with into an irresistibly tasty 80s-style fondue is ... yup, you got it ... freakin' awesome! I loved the scenes with Steve and Dustin in the second season, but the incredibly fun third season (which has my favorite monsters and references) would be my favorite so far!

my original idea was to wildly reference various reviews here, occasionally insert some of my own mediocre and clichéd writing in an embarassing attempt to connect them, and then wait for the stars to rush in. but you wouldn't have liked that. WOULD YOU? Honestly, shiny things is a neat production, but also a gaping void of creativity, the fluffers could neither write, nor direct their way out of a fire exit. They just cater woozy emotional blandness to people who jerk off to 80s memorabilia.

If you miss the style of movies from the 80's then you should watch some movies from the 80's (the canon of Joe Dante, John Hughes, Michael Mann, James Cameron, Ridley Scott, etc). If you want to see a modern take on those kinds of movies in an 8 part series, then Stranger Things will satisfy those feelings of nostalgia. Though I get this was emulating the movies from that time period, it also has the same predictable memes and tropes. I burned right through all 8 episodes. I must have enjoyed

Like Herbert West's loveletter for the 80s. I guess a Frankenstein reference had been more on point here, but Reanimator is an 80s reference thus trumps relevance and point. Anyway, if you're feeling nostalgic towards E.T., Goonies, Poltergeist, It, Night of the Creeps, Monster Squad -heck- even Silent Hill and Dream Catcher, then this is fine. S2: add Aliens to the list. S3: add Russians and shopping mall. S4: add Elm Street, best one yet.

One of those TV series that captivates you from the begining to the very end, and then you want more. Great characters, awesome atmosphere building (music is brilliant at times) and well paced story that sometimes feels bit slow but its just about right, at least to me. All in all, I highly recomend it to all who love quality mystery with little bit of science fiction.

Nothing special really. It's like an 80s monster flick stretched into a 6 hour show. Starts promising, but there's not much of a mystery here. Just your standard kids-getting-into-trouble-with-bad-guys-who-make-secret-experiments-and-awake-a-monster plot. It's watchable alright, but this time would be better spent just rewatching "The Monster Squad", "Pumpkinhead" etc.

Really cool, slick series that keeps a great entertaining pace going. The throwback to 80s themes/movies are pretty obvious. You've got Stephen King and Spielberg in spades and even a bit of X-Files and Twin Peaks sneaking in for a "modern" touch. It's not about doing anything new or different, but I can only assume the Duffer brothers have looked at what has worked well in the past and to their credit replicated it really well here.

A great homage to 80s music and film that also tells a succinct and entertaining story with a cast of children who act the socks off most child actors I've seen lately. Thoroughly enjoyed this first season but am a bit sceptical about where they'll go next. This basically feels like one long movie with a few question marks in the air but it has a satisfying conclusion.

Season 1 is pretty good, although fairly predictable it keeps a high level of suspense and Memberberries work pretty well here. I'd say a better watch than the 1990's It. score: 70; Season 2 is boring, repetitive milking I struggled to watch all the way through, with "The Lost Sister" episode being the garbage highlight of the show, clearly pointing to what we can expect from season 3. We can expect bullshit. score: 20; Season 3 score: not really interested; Final score: (20+70)/2 = 45

For decades, filmmakers have made tributes to Steven Spielberg and Stephen King. Of all of them, I've never seen any capture the essence of Speilberg and King as well as the Duffer Brothers have. Not only do they capture the surface details; the story encapsulates their coming-of-age and family themes as well. Stranger Things has an uncanny knack for capturing just the right balance in every episode between comedy, drama, horror, and making sure every character remains memorable.

A story that would have made a good film, unfortunately stretched out into an almost eight-hour long miniseries. The writing ranges from serviceable to terrible. I'm fine with making something a throwback, but the Duffers show no ambition or development above and beyond that, leaving the plot predictable to a fault. David Harbour gives the only performance worth noting. It took me almost two months to get through due to said issues.

The first scene is the best and the further the show progresses, the more it reveals how lacklustre and conventionally predictable it really is, leaving me thirsty for more of the surprises it did have in store. Hits certain emotional highs at times (especially scenes with Ryder) and is a nice throw-back to an '80s sensibility of film(TV)making (with a great synth score), though I started getting tired of it quickly, with plenty of sequences/scenes/moments being especially cliched.

A pretty entertaining scifi story that got too bogged down by its flaws. Despite all the nodding to movies like The Thing and The Evil Dead, even specifically praising their practical effects, the CGI in this series is plentiful and bad. All the bully characters were useless and could've easily been left out, as well as the overly dramatic backstories of certain main characters. However, the core trio of children provided great fun, both the acting and the writing made them a delight to watch.

Visual aesthetic and sound design is good enough to forgive a script that has its moments. Some cringeworthy flashback scenes for one particular character felt distractingly forced. S1. Good story. Winona Ryder was great, and so was David Harbour. The children were pretty amusing too. Entertaining 8 hours or so. S2 and S3 - very different pace and the character development went down the drain. The leftist nonsequential minority groups pushed down the spectator's throat were not appreciated either, and - naturally - served no screenwriting purpose apart from being sheer propaganda. Nevertheless the atmosphere was still somewhat solid. It's a shame since S1 was great.

This series is a mixed bag due to its three concurrent storylines of varying strengths. The mother's storyline is the strongest and contains the most interesting plot and creepiest scenes. The kids storyline is quite charming and adds a little humour to the mix but the atempts at drama between the kids falls embarassingly flat. The teenage daughter's storyline is by far the worst and drags down the series with its teenage romance, angst and drama and little actual plot value.

Really fun little nostalgia trip. Absolutely nails the tone its going for. Hits lots of tropes and cliches, but it plays well as intentional homage. Biggest problem for me was the lackluster climax in terms of story itself. Definitely worth a watch--my girlfriend and I are both pretty lukewarm on horror in general, but enjoyed this quite a bit. S3 Edit: It still nails the tone and characters; the mall was especially fantastic. But the story has become repetitive and meh.

This is probably the most overrated new series of 2016. Bad casting, bad acting, and poorly written characters. The child actors are just unwatchable for the most part, and none of them has any motivation besides what's put directly in front of them (same is true for other characters). Engaging and entertaining but ultimately the plot was hollow and contrived. The kids did a great job of acting. Winona Ryder was a stand out for her portrayal of a woman seemingly pushed over the edge of sanity. Reasonably good production quality but with somewhat overbearing music. Overall it was worth watching but you have to accept a lot of absurdities to enjoy it. Highly overrated on IMDB. It broke down badly in the 3rd season and became quite tedious.

It's not only very suspenseful but moving too as it combines fantasy and horror with drama and comedy in a very successful, organic way. The mystery is fascinating and so is the cinematography; the makers know exactly when to end each scene and how to make the best out of the material; the acting is phenomenal, rendering the great dialogue and character reactions even more real and relatable.

Winona's character feels like a glimpse into the future for the train-wreck she depicted in Black Swan. ST is dressed like a period piece for 30 years ago, or more accurately an 80's (hence the score) nostalgia blast complete with plot holes unique to the sci-fi genre. I wouldn't mind if they went back to practical effects vs the CGI stuff too, eg Cronenberg's work of that era. Looking forward to when the 90's nostalgia kicks in & we get American Psycho/ Pulp Fiction type hybrids, shot on film.

Featuring just the right amount of originality and creativity, Stranger Thing is an entertaining, and occasionally heart-wrenching, love letter to the 1980s.

A wonderful 80's nostaglia show with heavily influences from the works of Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, John Carpenter. The show would have probably been better off as an anthology series in my opinion. It's first season definitely stands out as it's best most engaging with each episode ending on a cliffhanger. That said it is entertaining throughout even after the mystery behind it is gone. A big con of Season 3 Hopper doesn't feel like the Hopper of Season's 1 and 2. S1: 85 S2:80 S3:70
