A romantic comedy not only for women, but also for men. Fabulous in every way from the disclaimer at the very beginning to the end. The music, acting, pacing and virtually everything else is derivative, but familiar and in a good way. Why I say this is because it feels a lot like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. 500 Days of Summer is a must-see without a doubt. I walked in wanting, and walked out wanting nothing else but the joy of seeing it the second time. Sweet and sometimes even sassy.

This movie pisses me off. It's horribly written and incredibly predictable. I do enjoy the post getting laid dance number though. A great movie to sit around and make fun of friends with, especially cause it's so ridiculously lame. All the super hip "indie" hipster references are embarrassing and PS Zooey Deschanel ain't that hot. When the chick at the end says her name was Autumn I sincerely wanted to punch the movie in the face. So stupid.

So overrated. 91 PSI? I can't believe the amount of people who fell for this film's poor disguise as something more an average rom-com. Deschanel is horrible, the ending is incredibly forced (with Summer reduced to nonsense), and most of it defies logic. "This is not a love story. It is a story about love." Dictionary: "Noun 1. love story - a story dealing with love." Yeah, that makes sense. Quirky for the sake of being different, brings nothing new to the table and is incredibly pretentious.

You look back on a failed relationship, and the memories start from the beginning. You remember the meet-cute, the awkward courtship, the silly, sexy first kiss. But memories don't always finish out in a linear fashion. Before long you juxtapose your best moments with your worst. The time your joke killed and the time it died. Listen, that's life. You can't annotate something both so simple and complex: sometimes you get together, sometimes you break up, and sometimes you misread The Graduate.

Definitely my favorite "romantic comedy", which is probably not too hard because I loathe the genre. Is it really one, then? 500 Days Of Summer doesn't seem to try too hard in that regard. It feels more like a "movie about love" and appropriately realistic at that. I've gotten alot of shit for hyping this movie after I've seen it but instead of burying it as a guilty pleasure, let me shout if from the rooftops: AWESOME. FUCKING. MOVIE.

Not nearly as good as it's made out to be, but decent. It claims to be avoiding the rom-com movie cliches, but it eventually devolves into nearly all of them. It's rather unsubtle in many respects, and the direction is weak in spots. The referential and allusive tone is amusing at times, but just as often misses the mark. Nonetheless, there are enough laughs to make it pretty watchable.

After ever increasing viewings, I am still not tired of watching this. How you can not love the subtle Han Solo cameo or the reality/expectation scene is beyond me. Great acting, editing are only more highlighted by the sensational soundtrack.

Gordon-Levitt is ridiculously talented. Granted, being the versatile half here is an easy feat; Deschanel annoys me. Enunciating on par with 'Team America' Matt Damon, she relies on a (for me, at least) non-existent charm. The good (expectation/reality gag, contrasts yielded from jumpy narration) outweighs the bad (dance, IKEA) and, if he at times comes off as smug (little girl gives sage advice, an oh-so-quirky narrator), the observant Webb refreshingly chooses an experiment over formula route.

Not cute or funny. Shallow and annoying. It doesn't help that all the characters have wretched tastes in music. I walked out right after the part where Whatisface and Summer try something in the shower that they just saw in the X-rated movie; you never want to try to fuck anyone in the shower, no matter how cute they are, as the water tends to wash away all lubricants, natural and otherwise. That's just beginning to describe how dumb this movie really is

Hugely overrated romcom, which I'm sorry to say chews on the same clichés that always seem to populate these kind of indie romance flicks. Tried to make an almost statement that could have made it something else than forgettable, but chickens out in the end. Gordon-Levitt does prove once again how good of an actor he is and can be. Not a bad film, but not at all the original piece it claims to be.

Once in a while a little indie comedy catapulted to wide release from glowing reviews comes, entertains, and maybe pulls at a couple heartstrings. Juno did it, Little Miss Sunshine did it before that. The difference with (500) Days is that it surpasses these expectations, which are already considerably high enough. The two leads are wonderful perfection and the script is funny and emotional. Is it the best romantic comedy I've ever seen? Quite possibly. And holy, did I not expect that.

Flat out it's an enjoyable and fun film but I can't shake the fact that it feels like a hipster's wet dream. Everyone seems incredibly trendy and speaks like real people like really speak with like awkwardness and like stuff. That and the seemingly non-stop barrage of music video sections really makes me think that this is going to cause some pseudo-indie waves in the months to come. Still, it's worth seeing but when someone tells you it's incredible take that with a grain of salt.

If you discount Tom's "hilariously" ironic job, the trite narration, the advice-dispensing preteen, the comic relief friends who exist only as foils to the main character, the scene music name-dropping, the punchline ending, and the fact that the movie holds your hands through the chronology leaps... With Deschanel's presence and similar subject matter, mainly causes a greater appreciation for All the Real Girls.

A frustrating film. Moments of absolute brilliance, both subtle & flashy, mixed with moments of very clumsy filmmaking and nonsense writing. None-the-less I enjoyed this. Gordon-Levitt is very good, & any film that spends extensive camera time on Zoey is going to get bonus marks from me! But this film never quite manages to shake off its shallow core, & forced quirkiness. There were a few scenes I just loved, but each one seemed tempered by the next. Ending was a fucking shitter also!

The more original this piece is, the more truth you can find in there. A lot of men would say "Yep, I feel like him" and "Yep, she is that b***h I have met too." Actualy this film does not claim to be a romantic comedy and it is not. It is a film about love - how do we feel it, how do we measure it, and how much wee need it.

This refreshing romantic comedy takes viewers on a roller coaster ride of emotions in a unique but attention catching way. Viewers experience a realistic, complicated relationship as two lovers, Summer (Deschanel) and Tom (Gordon-Levitt), test their love over a span of 500 days. This unusual boy meets girl story is admittedly depressing at times and the normal happily ever after union doesn't occur. Director Mark Webb powerfully emphasizes the importance of accepting life's challenges.

One of the greatest romantic comedies to come out of America, with dynamite performances from JGL and the always adorable Zooey D. We follow the story of a young man who believes in love, fate and destiny, who falls in love with the girl who denies all of it. The type of romantic film which can be enjoyed equally by both sexes with terrific dialogue and a rich soundtrack. The unique editing style works wonders (reality/expectations!) Some call it pretentious, but to me it feels authentic.

This is not your average romantic comedy, I promise. The awkwardness of the main characters' unserious yet complicated relationship just adds to the humiliating humor of the situations throughout the movie. If you like The Smiths, greeting cards, awkward eye contact, random dance sequences, and bittersweet endings, then this is the movie for you.

From the opening disclaimer to the narrator's final comment, this is a unique film. Everything clicks from the music to the stellar performances, but most of all what makes it a masterpiece for me is the message--and you don't really know what that is until the very end. This was a love story obviously written by a man who'd been been raked over the coals with his loss. It's a wake up call for all the soul-maters and star crossed fate-mongers out there. It is so righteous.

Sweet, quirky indie flick with decent performances (Gordon-Levitt is great, Deschanel so-so), a solid plot, good music - and not much else. The story never really convinces like it should. Like theficionado said: Go for David Gordon Green's "All the Real Girls" instead.

"-I love Ringo Starr. -Come on, nobody loves Ringo Starr. -That's what I love about him." And that's what I hate about this movie. People who derive their self worth from being different are fun to laugh at, but I don't want to watch a movie about them. I hate this movie so much it almost feels good. AHAHAHAHAHA AUTUMN My god. My god. Even the good Dr Spencer Reid can't save this annoying piece of shit. JGL either, although I love him usually. There is a Salinger reference that instead of making me go "Hey! This guy likes a shitty teen author despite being a twenty-something just as much as I do!" make me go "BAM!" and take out my dick like thunder or famine. Right on the desk, I hit the eject button on my dvr with my cock and managed to catch the DVD flat on the shaft. PS Zooey is ugly too.

Stylish and fun romantic confection. The narrative structure keeps things interesting, as do many of the visual tricks (I particularly liked the "reality" vs. "expectation" sequence). But ultimately it's pretty shallow - Tom and Summer are superficial narcissists who express "love" through fetishizing music, art, dreams (i.e. they're hipsters). That's not to say I couldn't identify with that viewpoint, but I never really cared for either nor do I think I'll remember them later.

Deconstruction (and reconstruction) of a romantic comedy is an utter charmer; potentially cold and distancing storytelling style and characters is made poignant and moving thanks to Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel heading a perfect cast (even Moretz excels as the cliched precocious kiddie). May have worked slightly better without the storytelling trickery, but the contrasting of the good times with the bad does an effective job of simulating the sifting through the wreckage of a bad relationship.

The kind of film I never thought I'd see, which maybe shows you how self-indulgent Neustadter really is, and the ending ruined the film a bit, but all in all, it's enjoyable. Levitt has a knack for picking interesting projects (hope you get to see 'Uncertainty' one day), he and Deschanel turned in some nice performances. Sure, see it, why not. The day I stop watching films though, is the day '(500) Days of Autumn' hits theaters...

For having very delusional outlooks on human interaction, which made certain things a hard to believe, this movie grabbed my interest and never let go. I do hate when writers use the cliche of making the wisest / smartest character a 13 year old. I felt they forced too much of that "granola / iMac" quirky lifestyle down my throat. I would have also preferred the movie to end with Levitt's character being miserable. They should have cut the last half hour.

What a movie to get me out of my movie watching slump. This is probably the most um, heart breaking look at heart break (and the most honest) that I've ever seen so far. Sure, the ending is a little Hollywoodish, but it makes thematic sense so it's forgiven. Great performances, great music, great dialogue. And that part where you see his expectations/reality then the city becomes a drawing then gets erased is extremely heart wrenching -- a truly inspired scene.

I went into this movie being surrounded by a lot of hype by a lot of people which probably made my expectations too high. I liked a lot of it. I thought it was genuinely funny, and the acting was as good as you'd want. I would have preferred a more ambiguous ending and I hate it when movies mention little indie bands because it always feels like they are doing it to be hip. Not my favorite movie but still heads and shoulders above most romantic comedys that are released these days.

Terrible quality wise, but watchable. Almost every character is annoying in this. The clingy desperate male lead meets a girl who clearly isn't suited for him, can't get over her and then whines about it to everyone. His friends only exist so he can whine to them. The female lead is almost as infuriatingly annoying, having zero charm. Add some stupid gimmicks and you have a bad film. If you like watching a terrible 'love' story about two insufferable people, go watch this.

In a sea of postmodern romances, it's in the middle of the pack. The filmmakers seem to want it both ways, painting a relationship as a series of anecdotes and shared interests, and then bursting that bubble. I mostly felt like it didn't have much of a message. It seemed more like a bag of clever tricks and shiny objects, and didn't feel new or original at all. It was enjoyable enough to watch, I just don't think much of it will stick with me for long.

Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel are wonderful leads in this very original and creative film that managed to soften me up to its romantic comedy in ways very few rom-coms do. I loved the many little quirks in which (500) Days of Summer proves to be an unconventional film, e.g. the hilarious disclaimer at the very start of the movie, the side-by-side expectation vs. reality scene, and the creative going back and forth between the 500 days. (500) Days of Summer actually did get off to quite a good start. It was funny, gave depth to its characters, and was quite entertaining. Then, about 10 minutes after it opens, it loses all of its steam. It tries to regain it later on, but doesn't, only giving intermittent laughs. The characters aren't all that interesting, and neither is their relationship. The story is told in an inventive way, yet still stays easy to follow. It's just not a story that is fun or entertaining to watch.

Bruce Almighty was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Its abstract concept gives it a novelty anyway but is a license for some surreal humour that you aren't going to see anywhere else. I found the beginning 20 or 30 minutes, basically the beginning of the love story, incredibly awkward and hard to watch. In a bad way. When things began to get more ugly and heart-wrenching was when I really started to enjoy the movie. What does that say about me? My one major complaint is this. No man talks to his friends like that. Nobody says exactly what they're feeling all the time. That kind of relationship is a fantasy, and it really annoyed me. Otherwise I enjoyed the movie.

Marc Webb has directed one of the best films of 2009 by far, a very interpersonal and understanding 'romance' without a hint of the mundane or any cliche to bog it down. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the best young actors out there, and Zooey Deschanel compliments him every step of the way. "(500) Days of Summer" is a tragedy about a guy and the girl who will never be his. This is established at the outset, as well as the over-the-top style. The style doesn't get in the way, as you are still given the time to get to know the characters and feel for them, even with the voiceovers and cut-aways scattered in between. In fact, they enhance the experience. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance is spot on. You can feel the anguish he feels as he sets himself up for nothing but sadness.

A wedding between two minor characters late in the film subtly underscores what it is that Tom pines for: a permanent commitment. Until he finds it, though, we're left with the feeling that he'll keep offering his body and soul to each successive person he falls for. That's an approach liable to yield more and more heartache for him--and for anyone influenced by his (and Summer's) tragically confused example of what it means to have sex and make romance. Every time this movie brushes up against greatness, it seems to get self conscious and need to crack a joke. The humor was often good but more often than not it prevented a scene from building. Otherwise, a fresh and fantastic movie.

I'd like it a lot more if the film didn't seem so intent on trying to hurt the viewer.

I'm unsure whether this is a bad movie with charm or a decent movie lacking focus. Settling somewhere in the middle, (500) Days of Summer is a heavyhearted, spiteful comedy about unrequited love and a man's ability to find himself in his continued failures at romance.

Zooey Deschanel with an age-appropriate love interest?! Now I've seen it all.

I definitely related to Tom more, but I liked how Summer acted as a vehicle to get Tom to finally do what he loves (believe in love as destiny, try to get an architecture job, start a better life, etc.). The music was perfect. The editing, cinematography, and script were wonderful. The ending was dumb. Cute. But dumb.

My expectations wasn't sky high, I was in for an enjoyable, average, quirky indie romcom that comes around every now and then for the last decade. It just feels old, gimmicking sincerety than the real deal and slightly better than the blockbuster romcom.

Disguises its lack of substance with an overabundance of quirky, kooky style

An indie eye for direction and a big budget give this film more style than you could hope for, but that's by the by. The real genius behind this film is its realistic portrayal of the heartbreak other romcoms tend to sweep under the rug. A wonderful story of 'boy meets girl' that puts on screen something all of us have felt/suffered at one point or another, yet which impossibly manages to combine realism with hopeless romanticism.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. We also stayed at a hotel that was across the street from the park they go to. That was fun and unique for a guy from Wisconsin. Oh, sure, I've seen the lake they filmed Chain Reaction on, but I also had to just look up Keanu Reeves' filmography to remember the title was Chain Reaction.

Other than the annoying little-sister character, there is a lot to like here. It doesn't end in a standard fashion, and the characters are a lot more human than you'd think. The presentation is great, and the movie does make you feel pretty good upon viewing.

Overall Enjoyment: 30/40, Plot/Themes: 15/20, Cinematography/Direction: 15/20, Acting/Writing: 15/20 Funny, unique spin on a love story. One of the most realistic portrayals of a relationship I've ever seen.

There's a "I'm in love!" scene where the lead starts shaking hands and dancing with strangers and has an animated bird perch upon his finger. This summarizes how much this film tries to be off-beat and fails. Another example is the split screen reality vs expected presentation of a scene. Showing a wanted reality was done lovely in high-fidelity, but here it's confusing distracting uninformative or humorous... I'm not even bothered by summar being bogus, some people are. Its just so pretentious.

My favourite romantic comedy. I might just be a sucker for this film, because it just felt so, so relateable. So many times did I go "I DO THAT" or "I think that a lot", and I watched it at the perfect time in my life where it seemed like it was telling me "Yes, you'll be crushed. We all will. Sometimes it will seem inexplicable. Life will go on, and it is not the end". Basically, I needed this movie.
