One fine day in 1997, my family took my 70-years old grandmother's sister to the movies, for her birthday. For some godknowswhy reason we chose to go see Con Air. It's indescribably ridiculous and hammy and pompous, but ye gods, she totally loved the shit out of it. Unfortunately, she passed away this year. And even though we never really knew each other that well... we'll always have Con Air. Bless you, awesome Cage-loving lady.

A deeply stupid film with shitty politics. Problematically endorses an essentialist view of criminals, presenting them as deviant, bloodthirsty animals. The exception is Nic Cage, a fundamentally good ex-Ranger who is "accidentally" incarcerated because of a Southern-style honor-killing (Jesus). Worse is the film's racial politics. Of three black characters, one is a militant who's equated with two serial killers(!), one is a crackhead, and one is a sidekick to Cage, nicknamed "Son." What.

While "Con Air" is a prime example of how the big dumb action movie survived into the 90's, it does not hold a candle to the best of the 80's. It's mindless, explosive, and completely over the top, in other words, perfectly entertaining.

Plain and simple: this is the cream of the crop when it comes to great dumb action movies. This might be my favorite Nicholas Cage performance, as he does come off very goofy, but also genuine in his motives. Cusack and Malkovich are also pretty solid as well for such a cheesy and over the top movie. It's not ideal to try and over analyze this, you know what are your getting with something like this, and it's quite good and easily one of my favorite movies before my time.

Cage has a mullet and a really fake sounding cajun accent. This movie is impossible to take seriously but the ensemble cast seems to know this as well so they all ham it up. It's entertaining for what it is and that's mindless Hollywood action trash. Just the very presence of some of the great character actors elevates this beyond mediocrity. There are also some entertaining action set pieces involved.

My ultimate guilty-pleasure film. This is actually a very poor movie by all accounts (hell, if it weren't for an ill-contrived plot device halfway through, the whole thing would be over, AND it has a false ending!). The lines are horribly bad (Sy... anora!). But it's characters are well-developed and the acting is brilliant... for a film of this caliber. A perfect waste of a Saturday afternoon.

Calculatedly junky and rednecky action movie that possesses the virtue of not taking itself in any way seriously, but few others. One scene seems deliberately lifted from Jack Sholder's ALONE IN THE DARK, as does the general concept of hiring a bunch of ham-type character actors to play a collection of psychopaths-and-psychotics-on-the-loose. While there are some amusing moments, there is, despite what must have been a much larger budget, less charm than Sholder was able, somehow, to muster.

Steve Buscemi is the only truly memorable character in this film, and he gets a very minimal amount of screen time. Another one of those "good guy gets sent to prison when he really shouldn't have, how mean those courts are" movies. The action is OK but nothing else, aside from Buscemi, is really good.

Con Air is the kind of movie that you want to dislike because it has such a dumb plot but you really can't help but enjoy. It has mediocre performances across the board, and considering there are good actors in it, that's a shame, but you really don't care because all of the explosions and cool action sequences are so gripping your eyes are glued to the screen.

Man, I'd put this one in the 50's if they didn't choose that song to play over Cage teary eyed, publicly tongue fucking his faithful wife, dollar bills raining from the sky, lit with flames emanating from a burning aircraft & various strewn vehicles gently clashing with the golden aura of the front end lighting scheme of a ubiquitous Vegas hotel foyer. All happening, while renowned child killer Buscemi drinks up Mai-Tai's at a craps table less than 100 feet away. Shit yea, 7 7 7 ya'll.

I miss when films like this could exist. It never tries to explain how ridiculous it is, and every actor is bringing all they can to this film. Oddly, it gives Buschemi's character a redemption arc because he chooses not to kill a little girl. This is the type of film it is, and we are all better for it. If anything, this film needs to be watched for Cage's accent.

Con Air is one of the dumbest and most absurd action films ever. But it's absolutely brilliant. For the majority it's so bad it's great. I'm a part time Cage fan and he is both awful and great in this film. And there are so many other capable actors who disgrace themselves in the best way possible. Malkovich, Cusack, Rhames, Buscemi & Trejo to name a few. The set pieces are great and the screenplay is moronically hilarious & quotable. Undeniably one of the most enjoyable action films of 90's.

Some time during the nineties Nick Cage got tired of dramas and decided to reinvent himself as the next great action hero, despite his sad puppy face and southern drawl. This movie is completely ridiculous and a taste of the insanity that Cage would later be known for. The script is terrible, but actors like John Malkovich and Steve Buscemi do their best with what they're given. The movie constantly toes the line of "so bad it's great".

Con Air is a silly, ridiculous, preposterous, absurd, and very enjoyable movie. I don't think I'd want it any other way. When a line like "Put the bunny back in the box" is used in a threatening way, you're onto something pretty solid. It's not smart, its characters are archetypes, and if you don't like this, then Con Air is not the film for you. If you, like the movie, can embrace all of those elements, you're going to have a good time with this film.

There's two movies here. There's the one the writers seem interested in, about criminals colluding and clashing a la Snatch to pull off the biggest score ever. The other is what they had to make, a by-the-numbers Nic Cage action movie packed to the brim with copaganda. These two movies interact fascinatingly, weaving an overly complex plot that may not be good but is certainly never boring. Unfortunately, *both* of these movies have one big flaw - really, truly unfortunate racial politics. Eesh.

A passable action movie, this film is one of three Nicolas Cage films I consider my 'ultimate white noise' trilogy. Nicolas Cage has had some gems and he's had some bombs, and this movie rides the fence between both extremes. I think what makes it enjoyable is the continuing sense of tension brought on by the close quarters of the setting. The acting is nothing of special acclaim; it's the dumb-action value of the movie that gives it replay value.

Bad action movies from the 80's are pure gold. Sadly, same can't be said about bad action movies from the 90's. This one particularly has a great supporting cast, that even makes Nic 'Deadly Weapon' Cage tolerable. But it is too self-serious to be truly entertaining. That's the biggest problem of all bad movies from the 90's.
