Great production values, great performances. Ben Kingsley does a fine job as the man himself. The film is filled to the brim with awesome sets, scenery, and mind-blowing crowd scenes. But unfortunately, it's often a rather predictable affair. It could've benefited from taking more risks, especially in terms of how to portray Gandhi and his complex personality.

It's length seems to detract from some of the inspiration burried somewhere in the film, however it is the story that should have given a film like this so much potential. It just felt more like a documentary than a film, and perhaps that was enough for some. It simply lacked art.

Kingsley is very impressive and the movie is a solid biography but I couldn't shake that it isn't anything more than that. Feels like I should be thanking Gandhi himself as a subject matter rather than the film itself.

I haven't seen this since my freshman year of high school, so my opinion isn't concrete here, but I thought it was a solid, if humdrum, biopic. Kingsley is good, but it plays out as a typical biopic, point A to B, major events, etc., with no real flair or uniqueness to it. Still, solid.

Great cinematography, well-acted, and better than most films in attaining historical accuracy. My biggest issue is the calculated attempts to get the viewer to identify with Gandhi by constructing him as an underdog.

I'm certainly no expert on Gandhi, but I think this was an adequate biography film about him. It was a little by-the-book, not really offering all that much insight into the man himself, but still a serviceable telling of the major events in his life. Richard Attenborough's direction was nothing special. Ben Kingsley was great though. Gandhi was a pretty amazing man, and that alone made the film worth watching, even if it wasn't spectacular itself.

Gandhi is really good at being what it sets out to be, but that being said, it's overlong and a little on the boring side all the way through. Kingsley's performance is monumental and makes you wonder why he's really never done anything remotely close to it since. It's easily recommendable to fans of period pieces, it's just not as good as it could have been.

Too long, dry and impersonal. It's not terrible but I could never really get into it. Quite long and as someone else on here noted: 'more like a documentary than a feature film.' Which doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing, but I don't really feel like I gained much out of this viewing.

Correct but easy to forget. Of course it deserves some recognition, specially about Ben Kingsley performance, because the movie is well done technically, and a good summary about Gandhi, with a lot of his bright ideas. But the movie as a whole it's nothing special or really remarkable. In that aspect, I think Attenborough did a better job in the underrated Chaplin, with some very well done, remarkable and emotive sequences.

Doesn't break any ground, but it gives a satisfying overview of the major Gandhi anecdotes. It actually helped me understand the origins of the partition a little better. I thought Kingsley brought some dignity to the role, although his performance didn't particularly bowl me over otherwise. Attenborough has a good eye for epic scenes, and a reasonable sense of pacing. I can't say this will ever be a favorite of mine, but I can't say I didn't enjoy it either.

Early 80's were great for biopics. All three my favorite films of this genre came out around the same time. Although it is not as artistic as Reds or well written as Amadeus, it has its own strengths. Acting of Kingsley is one of them. Not sure how accurate his portrayal of Gandhi is, but when I close my eyes and try to imagine Gandhi I see Ben Kingsley. A very inspiring film, but at the same time it makes me feel like there is no hope for humanity anymore.

The heart and thoughts are in the right place. But unfortunately this epic grows a bit too tired due to a very cyclical and repetitive nature, which is adhered to in an attempt to give a completist view of the peacemakers life.

The project that Attenborough tried to bring to fruition for twenty years turns out to have gotten done in the style of twenty years earlier, the style of a David Lean roadshow: there are no reserved seats, actually, and no musical overture or souvenir program, but there's an intermission, and a three-hour-plus duration, and a suffocating number of crowd scenes. One could well imagine that it took twenty years to make this movie, if only just to sign up the million or so cast members.

A fascinating and inspiring life brought to the screen with near perfection. Attenborough crafts the epic story with precision, emotion and clarity, and Kingsly delivers the performance to end all performances. He embodies Gandhi so well that it's almost hard to remember that he's an actor and not the man himself. Beautiful cinematography and great music round out the reasons this is such a good movie.

Film can not hope to reveal every detail or truth about a man's being. The focus of this large-scale recreation of Gandhi's life is to capture the essence of a man who so many people look to as an inspiration and hero. It does a tremendous job at both humanizing and glorifying him & his strict adherence to his transcendent beliefs. While the history is greatly explored, this is not a detailed documentary but a stirring invitation to viewers to discover more about India's journey to Independence.

"Gandhi" is no great film -it's too safe and conventional to be that. Of course, no one expects a film about Gandhi to be original, and for what it is, Attenborough's film is a very solid and serviceable biopic. Although it never hesitates to glorify its protagonist, the film benefits from Kingsley's memorable turn, the director's steady hand and a generally well-written screenplay. Although it definitely outstays its welcome, the picture does provide a sound retelling of a vital story.

A great film for the most part. I have no idea if Kingsley's portrayal was very authentic or only partly, but it did not matter for me. I found Attenborough's direction of these many episodes from the man's life captivating throughout. At times the scale of it felt like a David Lean epic - and that's high praise. And I also learned a lot about India's history. What more can you ask?

Gandhi essentially imps Lawrence of Arabia in every way possible, ranging from the narrative structure to the colorization. Naturally, you could do far, far worse in terms of films to copy, but Gandhi is a man of inaction -- the complete opposite of Lawrence. Despite an excellent performance from Ben Kingsley, the film never quite feels as though it comes alive.

Kudos to Attenborough and crew for hiring hordes of Indian extras as well as a master Gandhi impersonator, but it still lacks inspiration. It's a shame that THIS has become the lauded Hollywood tribute to one of the greatest people ever: a stylistically & intellectually dull biopic, presenting the most obvious & literal themes of Gandhi's life, which could be better explored by a semi-competent biographer. The film comes off as a "Best Of" of quotes and anecdotes; his legacy deserves better.

Though this may have been exceptional for its day—and to its credit, the film is remarkably paced for a 3+ hour biopic—its standard direction by Attenborough, whose style has always been "David Lean but boring," makes the film pale with age. It's still a worthy history lesson, though it does saintify Gandhi beyond human recognition. Kingsley absolutely becomes the man; he carries the whole film on his scrawny back.

A straightforward treatment with the odd twists and turns expected of this director; but the remarkable things about the film are first, that it was made at all in an age which regards inspirational epics as very old hat; and secondly, that it has brought into life so splendid a leading performance. Besides these factors the sluggish pace and the air of schoolbook history seem comparatively unimportant.

As remarkable a human as has ever lived. This film smartly allows that to shine through. It makes for a movie that never really surprises and doesn't take chances, but that's because the viewer is focused on understanding the subject rather than the filmmaking. Kingsley's performance was the lynchpin that makes the whole thing work so well.

Definitely has that kinda “filmed encyclopedia entry” feel. Certainly impressive in Kingsley’s performance, the Indian settings / history and in the big scale look of many scenes with armies of extras, etc., but just sorta unfocused. I prefer some more recent biopics with a more tight focus on an interesting couple of years in the subject’s life like Lincoln and The Social Network than this sort of “track fifty years in the subject’s life” approach that seemed to once be standard.
