Walking in you'll think this will never work but by the time it finishes you can't help be captivated by Gosling making Bianca real. Not a real person but initially as a real outlet for his inadequacies and lack of human interaction. Eventually she evolves into a symbol for a community coming together in order to help Lars overcome these and reconnect with society properly. What the hell if Hanks can make a beach ball into a character Gosling can make a doll into one. Touching and humorous.

I can't quite see why they billed this as the greatest romance movie since Before Sunrise but it had its moments. Framing the story around a plastic lead that only has one facial expression is bold but I guess Gosling has his fans. I've honestly never been more disappointed to come here and not find a BillyShears review for a film.

Interesting, quirky drama which cleverly makes you think about things like the nature of society, human relationships, disability, the lengths we are prepared to go to for others, and the sometimes thin line between what is real and what we pretend is. Quite a unique subject matter and a very skilfully handled story with subtly threaded themes. Fantastic performances from all the main cast but I particularly enjoyed Kelli Garner's kooky portrayal of Margo, Lars's (human) love interest.

I can't believe how far my view on this movie is from everyone else. Its not a matter of belief or "getting the humour", it simply a lack of craft and imagination that makes Lars one of the worse movies I've seen in years. I love Gosling, Schneider, and the concept but everything is so lifeless (painfully so) and plastic that nothing good can come out of these great things. Its the same joke ("He's its a blowup doll") with the same 2-dimensional character dragged on forever and ever. Painful

Showing this movie to your friends is more awkward than introducing them to your 'Real Girl'. It's so... Dreadfully... slow. Real Girls are awkward and Lars is strange, the film does an excellent job at making this excruciatingly obvious. Hilarious situations unfold surprisingly slowly and unhilariously.

The film is compelling and even resonant at times but the plotting occasionally appears contrived, by-the-book. Ultimately, the sugary finale hardly seems to have been earned -Lars opens up several interesting possibilities and Gosling lends him humanity, but the picture as a whole only partly delivers.

Low key drama takes a little bit to bed in, especially while the audience (in the film and real life) come to grips with the unusual central "relationship", but ultimately emerges as a powerful and moving portrait of mental illness, which neither patronises nor lionises Lars' condition. Gosling's intense and believable work is key here, with fine support work from Clarkson and an empathetic cast; Schneider is particularly good as Gosling's flummoxed brother (and audience surrogate).

Top badass moment? In the same way as I've never met anyone who's admitted to voting for UKIP, I've never met anyone who's admitted to using a sex doll. However, given the number of votes and sales associated with both, I probably have unknowingly come across quite a few. So it's a pretty badass thing to take your blow-up doll girlfriend out and about with you and have conversations with her in public too. (I'm not so sure voting for UKIP is though.) No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Exceptional performance from Gosling, & several of his support cast are worthy of note too, particuarly Clarkson & Mortimer. The whole movie has a really nice ethos & atmosphere. It's beautifully shot, well paced, funny & tragic. Gosling's relationship with Bianca is a fascinating one & the movie hinges on it well; but if there is a slight misjudgment here it has to be the portrayal of Bianca's relationship with the rest of the community. It never feels quite believable. Still, very enjoyable.

Gosling striking up a relationship with an internet-order doll? Sounds like it'd turn into something vulgar or flat in an instant, but a good script and performance give this movie a certain depth that just wouldn't be expected otherwise. Fun movie. Definitely should be seen.

I loved how loneliness takes over Lars' life and he gets a plastic doll which is the only real representation of a human he chould show his love to. The warmhearted people of the town show their support for him by taking Bianca in and playing along. Thanks to that unconditional love by the people Lars is able to overcome his fear of human relationships and is ready to start his real adventure into real one.

Gosling is fantastic, and while the film suffers from being a bit overly sentimental in places, it does a nice job of walking the fine line between comedy and tragedy. It's not quite as accomplished as the similarly themed Punch-Drunk Love, but it's definitely in the ballpark. And it's hard not to enjoy how a community of people respond to the struggles of one person's life. In a world where we increasingly live in our own individual worlds, this film provides a blueprint for a better way.

My only sort of gripe with the film is that everybody is so nice in it. Really, how did Lars manage to get so lonely in a town full of such nice, understanding people? Lars and the Real Girl could have easily been turned into an uproariously funny comedy with a stupid ending and schmaltzy performances all around. Luckily, screenwriter Nancy Oliver, who co-wrote many episodes of Six Feet Under, penned the script and gave this wonderful story such life and a general heartwarming quality.

It's a very optimistic and feelgood film where the protagonists act a bit sweeter than they probably would in real life. It's strange that a movie shot in Canada (bare the nature) always stands out as very glum and grey, even though in my imagination Canada is one of the happier and well organized countries in the world. I can usually spot Canadian locations by just the colors and urban environment

I liked this film. I thought Ryan Gosling and Emily Mortimer were great in it. I liked that it had amusing moments, but it didn't feel like an exploitative comedy. One of my favorites of the past few years. Gosling plays a loner who buys a Real Doll of the internet and lives under the illusion he is real. Some great supporting cast as well, helps in making this a truly moving story.

Could have gone wrong easily but it's told with such a sweetness to it that it pulls everything off with charm. Love the reaction shots, the actors really pulled them off.

Ryan Gosling is probably the only person who could pull off this role. In fact, not only is this probably my favorite performance of his, but it definitely adds another 10 points to the score. It's a powerhouse performance. The rest of the film is truly fascinating, with some very funny scenes. The best part is the sympathy that is built for Bianca. You feel for a doll.
