I must say I was very positively surpised by this. The visuals are stunning, the soundtrack is among the best ever in ANY anime and the fantastic attention to detail makes this a must-see. Funny, entertaining and captivating. Make sure you watch this in original japanese with subtitles and then go download the fan-made commentary track and be prepared to have your mind blown by all the things you've missed!

Early Miyazaki is still a treat, even if in reality "The Castle of Cagliostro" gets nowhere near the greatness of his later masterpieces. Watching this movie you can see all the elements of what makes Miyasaki great, but there are only flashes of his genius. He would go on to improve on this slightly unstructured and messy film by some distance, but even so, this is still good fun.

Miyazaki's debut lacks the fantastic imagination and whimsy of his later work. But it packs a lot of fun. An action tale featuring Lupin III, something like a mix of James Bond and Robin Hood. The animation doesn't have a lot of wow factor, but it looks nice. I could do without the exaggerated facial expressions, and in fact a lot of the attempts at comedy are just too goofy. But I enjoyed these characters and their antics. There's a lot of nifty situations and it's told at an enjoyable pace.

Is this really Miyazaki's first movie? If so, then it is all the more impressive as a debut. Either way, it stands very well on its own as a Romantic Adventure with Gothic overtones. Beautifully designed, too. BUT -- under NO circumstances should it be watched in ANY of the available English language versions, all of which are just HORRIBLE. Choose the original Japanese with subtitles to avoid ruining the whole picture!!

Lightweight Saturday morning heist on the art of the counterfeit. The lesson - anytime you want to telegraph that a guy is a villain just title them 'count'. Counts are always bad guys, even the cereal mascot and Jim Henson puppet are vampires. Only my first taste of Miyazaki but this one seems more for the kids.

I hope you like antics, because this is heavy on ingeniously choreographed, physics-defying set pieces which would give Looney Tunes a run for their money. It's about as fun and funny as Miyazaki's work would ever be.

It was a lot of fun. I'm not too familiar with Lupin in either manga or anime form, but I thought I'd check this out for it being Miyazaki, and I really, really enjoyed it. Interesting characters, a fairly engaging story, and Miyazaki's touch. Makes for a good anime.

The Castle of Cagliostro is a fun adventure with charming characters that's impossible to disagree with, but due to Lupin III's lack of continuity is free of consequence and doesn't resonate on any deep emotional level. Animation quality often falls short of a theatrical feature, and antagonists are simple and stockly villainous. I can accept its position as a classic and safely recommend it to anyone, but there's no aspect of it that stands among a peak quality of animated movies.

A pretty fun movie from a time where the divide between anime and western cartoons was an easily bridgeable gap. I haven't seen a whole lot of "Lupin III", but I like what I have seen and this feature adaptation is no different.

Hayao Miyazaki's directorial debut is the second theatrical film based on the popular television series adapted from Monkey Punch's manga series. The animation style is consistent with the established look of the series, but it's as rich and detailed as we have come to expect from him. Miyazaki has a very very strong debut. This is a thrilling comedic adventure ... not at all what one would expect from an entry in the middle of a long running series.

The first half is a PERFECT blend of delightfully-animated action sequences, subtle character-development, and delicate interludes (the scene where Lupin quietly, thoughtfully explores a ruined castle for like 5 minutes of the film's runtime is one of its most exquisite). The second half, however, is messy and unevenly-paced.

It was alright. It had some cute moments, and you can see glimpses of where Miyazaki was heading. But the story's not very interesting, and most of the characters aren't either. It wasn't as sophisticated as Miyazaki's later works, but the animation was still beautiful. The music was also really great. It's a perfectly fine anime, but is downright basic and simple when compared to the future Ghibli films.

I do like the show Lupin III (or, as I like to call it Roo Panda THIRD~! because I'm a terrible racist), it's like Speed Racer for people that eat only one bowl of cereal a day and pass on the sugar. The movie's at least as good as the show, but with a bit more polish. It's Miyazaki hacking it up, but a fine hack he was.

Miyazaki does Bond - enjoyably silly caper/action film is too light-going and bland to be memorable, but does come into its own during the action sequences, which are energetically staged and excitingly executed, (and sometimes hilariously fooling around with laws of physics that could never be forgiven in a "live action" setting!) Lacks the substance, and heart, that Miyazaki would make a trademark, but still good, undemanding fun.

Near-perfect adventure comedy with a good dose of atmosphere and intrigue for background visuals and mood. The animation doesn't reach the splendor of Miyazaki's later work, but it's still great and captures the charm of old-school 70s anime.

Miyazaki and Lupin III have two personalities that are tough to mesh, but it turns out they're meant for each other. Though it's probably not as raw as Lupin or touching as Miyazaki, it's funny, action-packed, and amazingly animated. I like it better than secret of Mano, but that just may be preference. Great anime, and I'm excited to continue.

It's interesting how this is the most popular film in the Lupin franchise and likely the only exposure a lot of people have had with the character considering how much more noble and heroic the main cast is portrayed in contrast to the convention of the series. As a flick, it's definitely solid - it has a lot of fun with its non-sensical rules for physics which is elevated by beautiful scenery and fun setpieces. The characterization is a bit dry even for Lupin standards, but it's fun throughout.

gotta be one of the best heist movies ever right? the long slow moments make the tension more compelling while comfortably moving the plot forward. the character interactions feel rooted in history despite the movie diving right into the action. i think good heist movies should make the audience ask "how are they going to make it out alive" and answering that question with truly inventive solutions, which this move does with style and ease. gotta overlook some red flags, but its a masterpiece

Miyazaki's feature film debut (after plenty of tv work) doesn't at all seem like a Miyazaki film: his usual thematic traits aren't here, and instead we get a light-hearted, action-packed screwball comedy. Still even if it isn't a Miyazaki film in the strictest sense, he still pays quite a bit of attention to detail. And even if it isn't perfect, it is fun.
