Does what all great movies do. It captures your undivided attention while it's playing (thanks to many great performances) and then causes you to think about what you've seen for a good time afterward. And like most of my favorites, there's some real moral ambiguity here and Shanley never forces you to "choose a side". Do you fall in line with the ice queen nun who's trying to stop a case of child abuse? Or the more relatable, but possible child abuser, priest? There are no easy answers.

I had a slight issue with the ending, but other than that, I thought this was excellent. The score was really great and added tension and suspicion where there might not otherwise have been any. The scene between Sister Aloysius and Mrs. Miller was explosive, shocking, and unforgettable. Adams, Streep, and Hoffman were all phenomenal. Overall, I thought it was pretty amazing.

Flaws? Shanley's choice to use several off-angle shots only distracts rather than enhances; a little too much of the playwright taste for some heavy-handed metaphor; & a willfull need to create an ambiguous ending where there should be none. But, these are quibbles. The film works. Great characters with incredible acting all around. Streep is getting all the raves, but the real knockout here is Viola Davis as the boy's mother. Hands down the best supporting performance by an actress this year.

"Acting: The Movie" So much acting. Acting all over the place. A film that is entirely propelled forward by the magnificent performances of the entire ensemble cast, who power a great script full of subtlety and nuance. After watching this, I genuinely believe that Meryl Streep has the ability to look into your soul and instantly know all the sins you have committed.

A terse, tense thriller tailored to the magnetism of the lead roles. Meryl Streep, as a draconian nun, becomes convinced that Father Flynn (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) has abused one of the altar boys. The entire film hinges on the lingering uncertainty of the priest's guilt (or innocence). It succeeds as a fascinating character study without much in the way of narrative complexity. The setup of the film is clear and modest, but its execution is nothing short of masterful.

Doubt is basically an average film guided and escorted by the proficient, devoted rendition of Meryl Streep and also by Viola Davis in her five minutes of fame. A bit sluggish though and the ending is execrable and overexplained. Unwanting of any Oscars.

Have you seen the trailer for Doubt? If so, you've seen the whole movie. This is clearly meant for stage and stage alone, but, all things considered this is at the very least entertaining and does have a good script. The acting is good but it's also obvious. These guys just act and act and act and never stop and actually become the characters. This is blatantly meant for theater but doesn't fail completely as a film.

The material is very strong, but the direction seems a little mediocre. Nothing very groundbreaking is done behind the camera here, and if it weren't for the amazing Roger Deakins this would probably feel like several cameras set up to record the stage production. Luckily Shanley has some of the best actors in the business giving his movie some of their best work. Streep, Hoffman and Adams all do phenomenal jobs, and they're what keep Doubt more captivating than anything else.

Written and directed by the same guy who created the play this film is based on, Doubt feels like watching a play a lot of the time. The actors bring none of the subtlety that film allows. Streep and Hoffman scream at each other as though people in the back may not be able to hear them. However, this is a pretty good film and the acting is overall solid. With powerhouses like Streep and Hoffman as the leads, Amy Adams is able to sneak in a pretty fantastic performance of her own.

Great acting!. I am sure the purpose of this play is to raise questions about 'doubt', but it actually raises (and never answers) the main one ...namely WHEN did 'doubt' creep in to someone of such stoic determined obstinance? Before the preist left, or after? which raises the question why did she not investigate properly, or what made her change her mind?? We are left to guess! Fundamentally flawed drama, with a ending straight from the theatre **curtain, rapturous applause .... ehhhh ??? *

Ending was a little over the top for me. I don't really watch many Streep films, but from what I have seen of her (DevilPrada and this) she is awesome in the villian/mean role. Not sure it was supposed to be funny but some of her comments and mannerisms had me cracking up. All the interaction between PSH/Adams/her was great (esp the meeting in the office). I am a big PSH fan and thought he was solid, but Streep steals the show, without a doubt!

Pretty good; the material is strong, the performances are very engaging, and it's not particularly bad in any way. It's not outstanding in any way either though (except for the acting). And this isn't really a complaint about Doubt, but in movies centered on this era in particular: didn't fucking COLOR exist? The palette is always so drab in these types of dramas. In this cinema version of a play by the same director set in a catholic school in the 60's, a nun accuses a priest of abusing a black student. Sublime direction, top-notch writing, flawless acting and elaborate production values mark "Doubt" as a superior motion picture. Shanley examines one of the most fundamental human traits with intelligence and sincerity. A subtle and expertly written script is brought to life by one of the best ensamples in recent memory: Streep is a force of nature, Hoffman is typically brilliant, while Adams and Davis are wonderfully fragile. The film asks difficult questions and packs an emotional wallop.

It does a good job at illustrating the sexist hierarchy of the Roman Catholic church, and at the way that more repressive attitudes probably did more to protect vulnerable children from predatory clerics than Vatican II-era relaxations. Meryl Streep's artifice will irritate the Meryl Streep haters, and contrasts rather nicely with Philip Seymour Hoffman's more naturalistic acting style.

Even if you aren't interested by the film's dark plot or think it just looks bad, see it for the acting, because the acting alone is an excuse to see the film. I may be in the minority here but I would have to say I thought Adams was better than Davis. Grade: B Plus

It works despite some irritations, i.e., the direction isn't great, I didn't like Streep's performance, it betrays its stage origins frequently. Shanley seems to have lucked out pretty significantly regarding the people that congregated around him, although it's a strong script so I can understand why. There's too much shouting and emoting in the performances, I felt like they didn't fit the tone.

The filmmakers' confidence to allow some ambuguity in the ending should be commended, as this certainly provides a catalyst for reflection and contemplation. This scene added some fascinating complexity to a basic storyline. Organised religion, who needs it, eh?
