It's not often that you see a truly dysfunctional family in a Disney cartoon that feels believable. Tia Carrere does a great job in displaying her exasperation as Nani trying to raise the odd and troubled Lilo. Very enjoyable, and very different for Disney. Frankly, it's the first film in a long, long while for them that didn't feel lifted from somewhere.

Gets shockingly heavy at moments, with two daughters still reeling from their parents' death and an alien creature without a meaning to live. Add to that the potent mix of Hawaiian and Elvis music, and the science fiction sensibilities, and you get something that's emotionally powerful and really appealing to me, even if the ending comes too easily and the technical aspects can't match Disney at its peak a decade earlier.

The early years of the new millennium mark a rough patch for traditionally animated movies. Computer animated movies were trending, and what's more, there was a lot of care put into them to make them appealing to all. "Lilo & Stitch" is like watching Disney go through puberty, you see some growth in capturing real human conflict and emotions with the child protective services, but it's still just not quite as mature as they would become.

Possibly the most unusual and otherwise unique Disney film ever to be made. For once reflecting the reality of families today--that we could lose each other at any point, and so we should treasure every moment.

I cannot believe they changed the ending where Lilo and Stitch hijack the plane with boxcutters , 9/11 sucked the fun right out of Disney , they just haven’t been the same since then.

If you don't come out of this film wanting to live in Hawaii and own a Stitch of your own, you have no heart. The characters and setting lift this up from the usual Disney pablum.

Sure, the plot's a bit rushed at the end, and the whole thing's leisurely paced until it's not. But there are few Disney films as heartfelt, supportive of nontraditional families, and as, well, weird. Also, Stitch is just about the most adorable creature ever imagined.

Simple, yes, but it has an honest sensibility missing from many kids films. Lilo is a bit annoying at the start but once we see more of her life it's easy to root for her and the situation allows the film to really capture your heart.

Most of the film is the same as any other of this type, but Stitch is great and the weird Hawaiian Elvis score really makes this a lot of fun. One of the best traditional animated Disney films.

(2014-15 Disneython #36:) I watched this back in 2002 and it's didn't make a huge impression on me. To my shock, rewatching it today in 2015, it's now one of my favorite Disney films of all time. Clever, funny, deeply emotional and exciting and witty and packed with both Hawaiian and alien goodness. Damn, this is a great movie. It doesn't hurt that Lilo's big sister is the hottest Disney chick of all time, with her midriff-baring tops and a thick, juicy ass that just won't quit.

Pretty good compared to some of the Disney animated output from the few years before this. It's still very much a kids film, but has enough charm and humour to keep adults amused, without resorting to pop culture references and "jokes for the parents". The story is markedly more original and better-written than past Disney efforts.

Who doesn't love Lilo & Stitch? As a kid, I used to watch the Disney Channel spinoff show religiously after school. I want to shake the hand of whoever thought of this beautiful juxtaposition-- part exciting space escapade, part girl-and-her-alien-dog buddy tale, and part family drama. That last element is what really makes the movie what it is, in my opinion. Nani should be hailed as a Disney princess in her own right for how hard she worked to be the best sister she could be. Love this movie.

The Disney-ness of the story actually gets in the way of how interesting many of the characters actually are. I love the interaction between the sisters and Stitch's existential crisis. But since this is Disney and must be made for children a lot of this takes a back-seat to the whimsical plot and musical numbers.

The highlight here is the blossoming bond between precious lil troublemaker Lilo and her alien kin Stitch, with their quirky and sometimes destructive antics masking a simple search for belonging. The sister relationship and weighty broken-family motif are full of genuine feeling too though, and together with the refreshing island setting these dynamics make for a grounded and charming character-focused film. The wild space action bookends then, while entertaining, feel a bit out of place.

Extremely reminiscent of The Iron Giant - not just in plot details, but in its honesty and emotional rawness. The relationship between Lilo and Nani doesn’t feel sanitized - it rings true with in a genuine sort of way that often escapes the tidy cookie-cutter family dynamics of mainstream animation. As good as everything else is here, the greatness of Lilo & Stitch is found in Lilo and Nani.

I remember being dissappointed by it much as a kid, but re-watching it as an adult it's become easier to appreciate it's edgier and oddball nature. This has become one of Disney's most under-rated flicks, showcasing some of the most realistic and believable characters in the entire Disney library. Still, it's pacing is off and while cute, lacks a certain level of charm that we see in the animated greats.

Didn't impress me much as a kid but then again it was around the same time I was starting to get corrupted by violent action/horror movies. For the ten-year-old me this didn't really comapare well to Dog Soldiers. Saw it again later and it still didn't make a very strong impression, although I did appreciate some of the weird touches a bit more. It feels unfortunately stuck between a formulaic Disney product and a little oddball curiosity.

A strange, but enjoyable movie. I'm honestly not sure how this movie works but it does. It takes a struggling family of two sisters and places them within a sci-fi story of a crashed alien in Hawaii. The result is a good mix of humor, action, and touching scenes as everything transpires. All topped off with an Elvis soundtrack.

Has a half-dozen great gags, and a dozen or so heartwarming character moments. Lilo is a truly unique children's protagonist, and her behavioral struggles do a lot to elevate the film. Ultimately, a whole lot of slapstick and broadbrush comic relief stop the film from remaining in any sort of meaningful emotional territory.

Criticker suggested 65 points for this one. How dare you, Criticker?! This is an underrated classic, one of the best Disney movies ever made and certainly better than the self-important and awkward Pocahontas. Supposedly, the Disney company would like to make more movies with non-white and non-western characters; this is what it looks like when they stop hemming and hawing and wringing their hands and just DO it.

This film is so far from the Disney canon in all respects, it's worth attention already for this. That means it doesn't have the typical Disney flaws, but it doesn't have the Disney virtues either. It has flaws and virtues of a different kind.

Every single character is terribly obnoxious. The best thing about this movie has nothing to do with the movie itself: it's the trailers for it that had Stitch appear in and corrupt several other (much better) Disney classics.

Follows the old conflicts-arise-because-people-blame-other-people-for-shit-they-clearly-didn't-do-when-they-had-every-reason-to-blame-them-earlier rule and sometimes mixes cartoon logic with...let's say regular logic...in an unsatisfying manner. The emotional beats are really well done, though.

Lilo and Stitch is a unique tale for Disney. Combining a timeless family story with a well thought out alien universe. The voice work is flawless. Each scene either builds the drama or makes you laugh out loud. Stitch himself is adorable and surprisingly three dimensional. Daveigh Chase's voice work as Lilo is among the best child voice acting Disney has ever released.

Lilo & Stitch is a really cute story. I liked the peak into Hawai'i this movie gave us. I think they could have gone farther but it wasn't bad for the time. The voice acting is top notch, as it should be for a Disney movie. The theme of O'hana, family, in this movie was the most important theme. Both of the title characters are struggling with their family identities and this adventure helps them find their families and shows them the importance of their families. It's funny and sweet.

Bouncy, good-natured but completely unremarkable animated effort is at its best when painting in broad and cheerful strokes, making the abrupt switches to comparatively heavy dramatic themes a bit tonally disorienting. There’s nothing here that hasn’t been done before and better, even by Disney; the superficial Hawaiian flavour at least makes it visually interesting.

It's like an animated version of Monkey Trouble. I hate this film, and although I try to keep my reviews less angry, this will be an exception. The movie is so painfully stupid. Any bit of cuteness or attachment is ruined, because the character Stitch is so completely obnoxious, and he never improves, so I wonder why the film even happens. The little girl should realize that her new monster dog is a rotten turd of a being and deserves no love, just like the rest of the film! Total crap!
