Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins are superb and their exchanges are excellent: written and delivered with wit, sensitivity, and nuance. The embellishments, however, were a mistake: the film is best in its intimate dialogue and the manufacturing of drama in flashback felt out of place and unnecessary. Cut the film down to the central dialogues, and it could have been exceptional. Instead, it feels like a unique dual portrait diluted by an unexceptional biopic.

As someone who has very little knowledge of Catholic politics in the past couple decades, I found it very difficult to parse fact from fiction. Yet, when taken as a story of human drama, rather than a historical document "The Two Popes" is a very entertaining movie that makes real two of the most unknowable public figures in recent decades, with no small thanks to two stalwart, exemplary leads.

The Two Popes is an engaging portrait into the transition between Popes Benedict and Francis. While the conversations are pure conjecture, the film humanises its subjects and paints a believable array of their views, reasoning and reservations. There is a slight skew towards Francis with the flashbacks, which while interesting didn't seem essential. Pryce & Hopkins were great, coupled with witty dialogue and a contemporary soundtrack and direction make for a good watch.

The direction is often too decorative and persuasive, which is distracting for a film championing themes of charity and simplicity. But sweet Jesus the dialogos structure of two dissonant faiths achieving some kind of reconciliatory harmony by the end, backed by two commanding performances, was like bread and wine to this weary soul. Yet I can't help but think how much harder the material would hit if it played like My Dinner with Andre: Infallible Edition.

It's such a pleasure to see Hopkins act, let's just hope his last role won't be that of a pedophile in a dress puking generic highschool philosophy about "faith".

Feels slightly like an ad for the catholic church, but I didn't really mind since Hopkins and Pryce are just so good.

Frequently very loud directing choices (dutch angles, usage of black and white, sound mixing choices, several strange edits) complicate what should be simple. The film also does the Catholic Church a service that it probably doesn't deserve. It is carried mostly by the great performances of the popes coming to some sort of common ground in faith, empathy is uplifted by the end somewhat (even if the film is wildly inaccurate).

Well, if you had asked me in 2019, I wouldn't have pegged a kammerspiel revolving around pedophilia as a candidate for my feel good movie of the year, but there we all are.

It is a decent film, although has slight problems with focus and pacing. I don't know why the dialog scenes were filmed extremely dynamically, a bit I understand, but dude, let me enjoy the dialogue. So dramatic!

The scenes with Pryce and Hopkins are electric and near perfect. The rest is clumsily put together. Meirelles' direction is too playful and distracts more than it contributes. So how do you rate the sum of one hour of powerhouse performances featuring two of the greatest actors, and one hour of average tv drama. I focus on the first.

Great actors with a few decent cinematography shots (and some Paul Greengrass like ones). It does become slightly more interesting at the end, but I started feeling the length on this one after the thirty minute mark. Not that great and could’ve been shorter.

Meirelles has had a curse with me ever since his exceptional debut with City of God. I've found him too unfocused, too panicky, too flashy in the editing room. But this material is perfectly suited to his style, which I think has also mellowed somewhat. Hopkins and Pryce talk for two hours, but the camerawork is often boldly close, beautifully distant, or shot like a documentary. And frantic editing, spliced with news footage, grants the film a real-world authenticity it would otherwise lack.

I was mostly surprised by how funny this was at times. I can understand criticism about these lighter moments standing in the way of more serious deeper discussion about the big dividing issues between the two Popes and dealing all the serious topics surrounding the Catholic church, but it didn't really hinder my viewing pleasure. Of course this most of all is an actors vehicle and both Pryce and Hopkins give great performances.

Engaging and funny when Hopkins and Pryce are on screen, with great performances from both. Pryce actually looks like Pope Francis, who gets the majority of the attention and a more positive portrayal.

As I'm not too knowledgeable on what's happened in the Catholic Church, it's really about the formation of an unexpected friendship between two men who have their differences. As a movie that is completely reliant on its dialogue, the script and acting need to be good and Hopkins and Pryce are great.

As with nearly every biopic I see, a documentary would have been better. I'm not really invested at all in anything the Catholic church does.

Faith and politics aside, this is a heart warming conversation about humanity, friendship and our relationship with the sublime. Both performances were amazing. I am not sure how accurate the portrayal is but frankly I don't really care.

For a movie about two old religious guys talking to each other it's surprisingly colourful and dynamic (see the handheld camerawork, lively soundtrack, and bright and goofy end credits) but it's got dramatic weight too: the leads excel and the great and hefty dialogue is complemented by plenty of personal character moments and an intriguing look at papacy politics (superbly edited). The flashbacks are interesting but awkwardly shift the focus to Francis when it should have stayed on the two.

This reminded me of Frost/Nixon, which I also liked. It doesn't matter if you are interested in the history of the Pope or not, it is just a fascinating film. Carried, of course, by the two leads who are both magnificent. Those who like a bit of action in their film will find this a bore, but it's incredibly enthralling and had my attention for the duration.

Did I just watch Pryce and Hopkins deliver the best performances of the year? Maybe, maybe not, but they did anchor the film perfectly. The settings are absolutely gorgeous and I thought the use of language was interesting. Overall its maybe a little long, as I did find my attention drifting occasionally in places. Though for the most part its very solid filmmaking bolstered by two of the years best performances.

Enjoyable two-hander feels like a GRUMPY OLD MEN variation - while both Hopkins and Pryce are fantastic, and worthy of the time spent, they can't quite overcome the faltering slightness of the execution, with Meirelles using too much flash to overcome the lack of substance (the hand-held zooming becomes incredibly irritating). Deals with Francis' evolution in superficial (sometimes confusing) ways, with Hopkins reigning supreme simply by virtue of having a more modest character arc to invoke.

Considering that this is really a 2-hour conversation, it is remarkably captivating. Hopkins, with a little help by the make-up department, is out of this world!

This is quite a thoughtful film, with a good performance from Anthony Hopkins. It features some truly beautiful settings - tall cathedrals surrounded by murals and paintings etc. and the like. It's sad at times and somewhat insightful. I liked that the music used is quite subtle and not at all over the top and it didn't feel unnecessarily sentimental or 'Hollywood' either, in an artificial sort of a way. I would recommend this film, yes.

Great central performances and pretty (as opposed to beautiful) cinematography make it highly watchable and enjoyable for the assumed target audience but it lacks the narrative grip and conviction to achieve weight or depth on its own terms, settling for the allusion to depth and weight (not terrible but not great).

Just awful. Contrived, completely implausible conversations carried by wooden dialogue, and two fine actors hobbled by a script which gives them nothing to work with. Eyes will roll when the two popes hum ABBA, discuss The Beatles, dance the Tango or eat pizza. Notable for some lengthy, deathly dull flashback sequences.

Pretty watchable -- Meirelles makes sure we get dizzy with so much fast cutting and shaky cam like he is directing a fucking Greengrass movie kkkkkkk -- and the comic parts seem less ridiculous than expected, but the flashbacks, Jesus Christ. Despite the engrossing historical and political background of Bergoglio's youth, this plays like a mere collection of "inspiring", beautiful speeches than an engrossing chronicle about the biggest change in Vatican in I don't know how many decades.

This is why Netflix was created. The budget and leads are higher than a made for tv movie. The acting is excellent from the two leads and the supporting cast is good too. The script is surprisingly very humorous too. The editing and direction are a little weaker than a traditional film in theaters. The shaky half "the Office", half traditional is an interesting approach that gets old in its 2 hour runtime.

Meirelles directs conversationally, even playfully and creates a theological yet earth-bound discussion that is light on its feet. The conservative giving way to the liberal is fertile ground for contemporary themes, and if you've ever been in a Byzantine Italian church you know that the contrast of your personal troubles with the eternal is affecting. As is the call to action, to be part of the world.

Pryce and Hopkins carry a movie that's ultimately far too deferential to its subject matter. For a film supposedly about a humble pope who cares about the common man, it's remarkably busy using every trick in the book to idolize him while everyone else remains tiny and inconsequential.

What a joy to see these two actors doing their thing. The film in itself is a bit "small" and - especially in the beginning - slow moving, with the last 20 minutes being the best.

Far from great but I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. I expected a phoned-in performance from Hopkins and was shocked by how much he moved me, especially playing a man I find so distasteful. Pryce is great, too — even when he's the protagonist, his instinct to defer to his scene partner remains intact and that's the perfect temperament for an actor playing Francis. The flashbacks are awful, but whenever the movie was just two old virgins yelling at each other I was totally rapt.
