After 2 seasons, The Mandalorian has, through rough patches, established a solid western/sci-fi adventure show. My heart tells me this show is capable of telling more interesting stories but my brain reminds me Disney will not take any risk with the Star Wars property. I might be disappointed in the cookie-cutter storytelling but I think the showrunners at least understand their own limitations and maximize the things that work: tone, actors, production, and the established Star Wars universe.

As good or better than ANY Star Wars property (although I still give the edge to Empire) Looks like Disney used the Michael Scott rule of business here - K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple Stupid! Just a bounty hunter trying to get Baby Yoda home, while dealing with space mercs trying to stop him. It's really all the plot I need. How do you get people to fall back in love with the Star Wars franchise? This is the way. I have spoken.

After years of abuse of Star Wars franchise, this was finally something that is close to the "thing" (I don't know how to describe it; that first moment I saw the opening credits of Star Wars when I was 6 is etched to my mind with a laser) that I fell in love with as a kid. What makes it exceptional is the music; Goransson is a genius (maybe a new P. Glass). The capacity of Disney for creating cuteness is magical too; they made the cutest thing based on f.cking Yoda man; how can you do that?

This is the way. I enjoyed this way more than the recent trilogy of movies. The tone is more interesting and I think I'm just not interested in the Skywalkers and ineffective Jedi. There's a wealth of gritty stories that could be told in the seedy underbelly of SW, much like Rogue One

Overall, the first season of The Mandalorian has its ups and downs but finds itself by the end. While the pacing does meander a bit, it all feels real and grounded. Bringing in some top-notch talent behind the director's chair helped a lot (especially Taika Waititi's turn for the finale), accomplishing the difficult task of making an atmospheric sci-fi/Western blend. While I don't love every episode, I was never bored once, and because of that I think this show has a bright future.

No one needs more Star Wars but this is exactly what Star Wars needs. Mostly assembled from mediocre and cliched elements but its focussed and unpretentious manner in every area of production makes it feel fresh and enjoyable. Sticks to the essentials and avoids excess which is great to see from a modern action adventure story. Also its throwbacky structure really works with this type of material in this day and age.

The Mandalorian fits well in the Star Wars theme. However, I was not impressed by the baby Yoda character. Other characters were very well done. I dislike it when action occurs off-screen, and bits of this series were handled that way. Overall I was satisfied with the story and mythos. I was pleasantly surprised that it was better than I had expected.

It's all the best of what Star Wars can do when it is not muddied with plot holes and new clichés just to create new stories. This has all the unpredictability you would hope for in a budding sci Fi story. The Mandalorian himself is a bit of an odd protagonist because he doesn't reveal much or say a lot but the heart of the mystery is surrounding the character the world has fallen in love with...Baby Yoda. So far it has been top notch action, great pacing and cool characters. Solid fun.

Mostly it's fairly enjoyable, thanks to the Star Wars setting, but it's not very memorable or surprising. The stakes often feel forced, the characters are bland and the dialogue isn't great, but it gets a pass from me. I do believe Star Wars can be much better than this though.

A very positive surprise. It keeps things simple and manages to pay tribute to the original films without pandering too much. It has two of my favorite Star Wars character of all time (Baby Yoda and Kuiil), and it's definitely my favorite addition to the franchise/world/Disney cash cow since The Force Awakens. I have spoken.
17 Oct 2020
The first Star Wars-related piece of fiction I've indulged in since 2005's Episode III, by then already years past my childhood fandom of the original trilogy and its orbiting shared-universe content. And, gosh, what a way to get back into the franchise. With the exception of episode 4's atrocious... everything..., 'The Mandalorian' finds itself at the crossroads of Star Wars' western influences and a more thoughtful pace than evidenced in the films. Which is to say, it's surprisingly great.

It's a mixed bag. It's good that it's formulaic, but it's a bit TOO formulaic. It feels like competence somewhat restrained by incompetence... yeah, that was kinda vague, I know, so let me rephrase it. It feels like a movie made by wise and skilled people but with 8+ aged viewers in mind.

Season 1: I think the reason I liked the Mandalorian so much, was because it was very obviously Star Wars without always trying to feel like it. The first season of Favreau's show sheds some of the weight off his shoulders of trying to fit in with what's already done, while presenting an interesting, and compelling story for new and old fans to follow. I'm looking forward to seeing where this is going.

The overall vibe of this is pitch perfect. The characters are gritty but authentic, and even funny in appropriate amounts. The art design is gorgeous, immersive, and the right amount of alien. The world has enough ties to the franchise to make it feel like the same world, but distant enough from prior works to avoid the feeling of just reheated leftovers. The big knock is that the story just doesn't engage enough for a serial and the one off episodes are mediocre.
31 Dec 2019
Though I haven't seen everything Star Wars, I reckon this is easily the best Disney era SW material out there. It actually has interesting characters and a fun but emotional story. Great music, shot well, humour hits when it's there, wonderful atmosphere and world building. It's also nice to have a cool looking character (the titular one) not get misused.
29 Dec 2019
Instead of comparing the Star Wars franchise to itself and constantly trying to tear new installments down, compare to other sci-fi fare. There's a lot of poorly done crap out there, so sit back, shut up, and enjoy! Thankfully this is off to a great start and fits right into the universe without being heavy handed with the references.
14 Nov 2019
At its core, this series is a high budget fan film that prioritizes immediate satisfaction and fan service over anything truly engaging. The writing rarely elevates beyond statements of facts delivered very dryly. Even the rare good actor struggles to convey any depth in their performance. I do see a solid foundation behind this sloppy final creation, and a competent production team could have explored these same stories in a more original and intriguing way.

Ah, now there's something I can recommend. Watch this if you were disappointed with the last three movies in the main franchise. It is pretty, has a good tempo, and some very good characters; not only in a Star Warsy way (wow, he's cool/stupid/funny), but also with some depth. There are quite a few rotten eggs in there - mainly the prison escape episode in Season 1 - but ... whatever.
10 Jan 2021
Favreau & Filoni hit home run after home run giving viewers (even non-fans) everything they'd want from SW - especially in the 2nd season which has appearances by several fan faves. Who is the idiot greenlighting shows about Cassian Andor - 1 of the LEAST memorable characters in Rogue One - in the name of diversity, when Jynn Erso & others were far more popular? Put Favreau in charge please. He understands the action AND the heart managing to give a stoic & faceless bounty hunter a character arc

80% filler episodes .. i just don't get it. the disney bar has been set so low i guess this gets a pass. the show isn't about anything ... baby yoda looking cute for 9 episodes eating things.. ok. killing monster of the week to open gate to next episode. this is disappointing considering the money and technical effects they have now. i'd expect star wars meets game of thrones meets lord of the rings epicness ..
09 Nov 2020
Just couldn't get into it. The dialog is terrible and the show feels like a stage performance rather than immersive into a world. Also, wtf is with the score? That sounds nothing like the star wars universe. If you put the opening scene in front of me, I'd never have guessed it was in the Star Wars universe.
28 Oct 2020
Disney really lucked out opening their Disney+ service with this. Really well produced Star Wars content. I'm incredibly impressed by the technology they implemented which far surpasses green screens, but the actual production design is top quality too. Really cool character and story and I look forward to continuing this journey next season.

Though at times somewhat contrived (the Face comebacks and escapes come too conveniently to be satisfying) this is a solid series. Plus, Baby Yoda means my girlfriend loves it too, which is a bonus. Wolf & Cub comparison is bang on, and it has this curious Western vibe. Looking forward to season2.
01 Sep 2020
Unbelievable. I never expected someone to not only be true to the original films but also to be creative, inventive, and perfectly executed! I've watched the whole season 3 times already and never got bored for one second. Beyond all expectations. At first I thought the only flaw was the lack of a Jedi. Then I realized Baby Yoda is not only a Jedi, but the first child Jedi to have a real role. A mute character with a vibrant personality. And also comic relief. Brilliant.

So I am biased here, because I am a Star Wars fan. If you are not into this, you probably won't enjoy it as much as I did. The story of the show is a true western. A gunslinger fighting the good battle in a country without law and he would absolutely never abandon his code of honor, not even to save his own life. Honor is the central theme. I can recommend it even if you haven't seen a single Star Wars title, if you either have the taste for a western or for a relentlessly honorable protagonist.
29 Dec 2019
6 episodes in & I still find The Mandalorian a jarring entry into the Star Wars universe. Pascal is great as the titular character & the plot is often interesting. Despite some good guest actors, there is often too much bad acting that spoils each episode, not helped by some atrocious dialogue (even next to Lucas' cheesiness). Ultimately it feels like an aminated show that has had a rough transition to live action. S02 is an improvement, but the Imperials being played by Yanks breaks immersion.
13 Dec 2019
The Mandalorian is a $100 million show about nothing. What is Mando's goal? Protect the child? Survive? Those goals are too open-ended, they don't have real solutions. Since Mando doesn't have concrete goals, we can't root for him to succeed because we don't know what he wants. Why am I watching this? It's not for Cynical Disney Cash Grab #98753462347809 AKA Baby Yoda. Put this franchise out of its misery.
14 Nov 2019
I watched this after the disappointing sequel trilogy, so this felt refreshingly different. Seasons 1 and 2 were outstanding—the music, the story, everything. The Season 2 finale with Luke was peak Star Wars. Season 3 was a bit of a letdown, not quite on the same level. Still, this is the kind of quality I expect from Star Wars. Huge thanks to Jon Favreau for delivering this. It gave me new hope for the future of the franchise.
03 Jun 2025
First season was almost perfect. Later seasons begin to suffer, especially after season 2. Should have kept a simpler format. Guy gets a bounty. Guy chases bounty to a weird planet. Misadventures and Western vibes. Rinse and repeat. Leave longer plot lines alone. Meh. Still looking forward to more episodes.
01 May 2025
It has good moments, but most of it feels too forced. Every episode is basically a self-contained side quest. So it feels like there's little driving a show arc. It's fun if you don't take it too seriously, and Grogu is great. But the show's charm starts to wear off after a while.
17 Mar 2024
95 if only including season 1 and 2. The end of season 2 should have closed the story. Season three is rubbish writing and a rubbish attempt at swapping the main protagonist out for someone who fits Disney woke agenda. Don't bother making season 4 Disney, you've wrecked another great franchise.
10 Mar 2024
It's fair to say there is a formula to this, but I don't mind it. Mando has an overarching goal, goes to a place, oh no, complication, it's resolved, Mando get's a clue to where to go next. Rinse and repeat. And yet, the production and care put into the world elevate it beyond regular formula shlock. Pedro Pascal really helps too. It would be lovely if it could go full Kurosawa, but I can only dream.
26 Oct 2023
I had high hopes for this series. A chance to see the seedy underbelly of the Star Wars universe without the crutch of The Force as we follow a Bounty Hunter through the dreary greys of morally dubious contracts. I forgot it was Disney, so instead we got a Mercenary-with-a-Heart-of-Gold storyline on the world's longest escort quest for bloody Baby Yoda.
23 Mar 2023
Takes a similar 'retro' approach to the latest trilogy but is more successful because the storytelling is relatively focused. Some episodes are much better than others, and repetition sets in when the realisation dawns that this 'character' doesn't provide real scope. It has the most appeal as a sci-fi western, and while it is a rather workmanlike affair, the production design can be reasonably impressive, and the action should please fans. Scores easy points for Herzog's inclusion too.
09 May 2022
S1: 70 | S2: 75 | Not as dark as I was expecting, but it works as a show for most ages. The score is somewhat experimental and refreshing compared to the movies. It is lacking in consistent characters aside from the main two, but it’s not too much of a problem. It’s not one of the best SW properties, but it’s well above the average.
11 Feb 2021
I do not like the Star Wars films and feel they are for morons. I really got into this. Laconic space daddy and his adopted son. It has a lot of elements that feel rightly placed, like "the way" thing being revealed to be a religious cult type thing. That's a thing that could easily be played straight and the same idiots that think Walter White is 'cool' would think it was cool. Also I love the bong bong! of the theme. Yes, your reasons for liking a show can be stupid ones. It's ok.
22 Jan 2021
The pattern gets repetitive. 1. Arrives in new place. 2. Has to help local population. 3. Has to save baby yoda or other character. 4. Makes almost no progress. Rinse and repeat. But... its already miles better than all the Rey/Kylo films. Cartoonish writing but predictably fun.
05 Jan 2021
Not without its problems, but it is interesting, which is more than I can say for literally any Star Wars done after the original trilogy. Edit after season 3: not Mandalorian any more, but an activist-written girl-boss Bo-Cretin show. S01: 75, S02: 75, SO3: 0. Give it up, or go back to writing a decent script, the whole political activism garbage shouldn't have elbowed into entertainment. At least they're losing money now, so hopefully the execs will give them all the boot :P
01 Nov 2020
I didn’t get around to this one for a couple of months but once I did I thought that it actually lived up to the hype with a mood that was a bit more edgy without dipping into unenjoyable grimness, some slick action scenes and baby Yoda. I really liked all the main “arc” episodes on either end of the season and some of the middle episodes made me think of a not-quite-as-good Firefly. Will watch season 2. I have spoken.
