This movie may be a tale about a strict family who is brought together by a governess, but it really highlights the problems that people had because of the Nazi's. The movie is really easy to sing along with, and is a joy to watch. Sometimes you may find yourself humming some of the tunes in your car, and laughing at all of the humor. I particularly love the song about "My favorite things" because it really does help during a horrible thunderstorm!

I'm not inherently against wholesome family films. Granted, it's not my favorite kind of movie, but if it's entertaining enough (The Wizard of Oz), I'm all for it. But this is just too much. This precocious brood of rosy-cheeked little moppets is too sugar-sweet for my tastes. I don't even like the songs that much, which is unfortunate because just about all of them are sung twice. The scenery and color is lovely, though, and at least it's not too dull for a 3-hour picture.

Just not to my liking. What's the deal with the final act? It's as if they realized the film is missing some dramatic weight, so they decided to throw NAZIS to the front of the narrative. It's like a totally different movie.

Is it just me, or does this movie pull off the trick of being a deeply subversive commentary on the nature of war and unthinking patriotism? They take this adorable, Disney-esque romantic comedy about a free-spirited nun and let the rise of National Socialism slam into it. We literally see (SPOILERS) the same person who, a couple hours earlier, was doing a Disney duet with the cute and marketable teenage heroine, make the conscious choice to be a Nazi. We see that moment on-screen. My god.

One of the greatest films ever made and the third most popular movie of all time (behind Gone With the Wind and the original Star Wars), this gem is just as great today as ever it was. What's it got? Try Julie Andrews at her amazing best, incredible songs and score, breathtaking scenery and cinematography, good vs evil, and a great love story to boot. If this film doesn't raise your spirits, you are truly a jaded sourpuss!

The Sound of Music is the perfect balance for a musical. It's not overly sappy with its music and it doesn't let the acting and, well, movie part fall to the side of the music. The songs are a breath of fresh air and try to breathe life into the thought that song can dictate your very existence. It's a great family event that really should be enjoyed by everybody.

Hadn't seen this classic even once (despite the anual rerun on TV) and I think this just might become one of those guilty pleasures. I truly enjoyed every part of his film, which is truly a classic and whose music is so renowned that I was able to sing almost every part without ever having seen this film. Humour, singing, warmth and depth, you get everything when you watch The Sound of Music.

A movie I liked when I was younger but never admitted to liking because I was a boy and what boy would admit liking a musical? I haven't rewatched it all the way through as an adult but I still have vivid memories of it and think the vast majority of the songs are wonderful.

It's probably because I don't really enjoy musicals, but I can't really say this was anything more than good. The music and songs were sometimes great but other times overbearing, the visuals were fantastic but the plot was rather silly. Finally, the last 40 minutes are completely tacked for absolutely no reason. The whole Nazi subplot is unimportant to the rest of the film, and the movie is long enough to stand on its own.

Musical for people who dislike musicals. There's a timeless naive innocence to watching the immensely talented Julie Andrews sing with kids that's endearing to even cold hearted cynics like myself. It's an ode to a long gone Europe as well. The setting adds to the pure joy without trivializing history. The scenes play out like moving paintings right down to kids singing that do re mi song in a horse carriage or dancing around the city. The catchy tunes will also be stuck in your head forever.

possibly the best american musical ever made? My favorite things stands as a high point of tin pan alley songwriting. Could have more nazis in it, that would definitely help the overall impression - a nazi song here and there would, probably, border an incomprehensible line of inappropriateness, but would have made it a more interesting film.

Fun but when they say based they mean that very loosely, seriously they changed almost every detail: the time frame, the number of children as well as their names and genders, and capt. Von trap's whole personality, etc. It's quite odd.

Whilst you can level a load of criticism at this film for the fact that it has been played to death, and seen through our horribly jaded 2000's view on life, sugary and unreal, but it's still a monumental film; not least for the fact that it is the chance to witness a truly amazing star shine brighter than ever. I catch this every so often, say I will watch 10 mins, and find I watch it all, and marvel at the unbridled joy that the first 1/2 of the film portrays. The "theatre scene" is pure bliss

Kael saw this as another big step towards a culture industry based on extreme calculation and manipulation at the expense of real creativity and invention. No doubt she was right, although the classical Hollywood musical was already heading into crisis: it is slightly odd that that crisis partly came from the more "adult" values and attitudes that accompanied the freeing up of the 1960s, and yet, despite WEST SIDE STORY, CABARET etc., one response of musicals was to become sexless and juvenile.

Can't see how this gets a PSI of 85. Songs are cheesy and all of them are sang at least twice during the movie. Acting is subpar. Plot is childish. The movie is unnecesarrily long. This is one of, if not my most favourite movies of all-time. I adore the music, the story, and the setting. A scene in this film that always gets me emotional is when the Captain sings the "love song" to his fellow Austrians. Even though this movie is nearly three hours long, it doesn't ever seem to drag on and is never boring. I think it could have improved in the areas of acting (not Plummer though! He should have received an Oscar nomination too) and script-writing.

I can understand why this is considered a classic. It's a cute movie with catchy songs. It does stretch a little long for what it is doing though. A few too many songs get repeated and the ending is strange. The tone of the movie changes drastically (which is hinted at) and it just kind of ends unexpectedly. Even so I thought it was an enjoyable movie with a lot of charm. While maybe not one of my absolute top movies, it is definitely nestled within my favorites.

A very pretty view of the Second World War as just a young nun, some sweet children, and the coming of the Nazis. Robert Wise and screenwriter Ernest Lehman had killed West Side Story a few years earlier, which was a more serious crime than making The Sound of Music, because the latter had always been brain-dead. Christopher Plummer is caught between heavy boredom and the apparently serious urge to start kicking some of the children.

Well, of course the music is wonderful. And you get another chapter in the long history of the Cartwright sisters (it's Angela this time). But I had a problem with the blackouts after the songs; unlike in West Side Story where Wise lets the action continue afterward. Here it makes it seem stilted and artificial (I mean, even more than a musical is going to seem anyway on the screen). Plus it's lonnnggg...

Good heavens, this movie doesn't age well. I haven't seen it since I was a child, and I suppose I was more easily impressed then, but I am barely into it and already I am realizing that as an adult, this movie holds nothing for me. The music is still catchy - I believe this is more one of those movies that makes good background noise when you want some music to work with. But I most definitely cannot be bothered sitting through a saccharine, hollywoodized romance for three bloody hours.

One of the handful of musicals that I thoroughly enjoy. The songs are all quite memorable, if not overly sugary and fantastical, but the fact that the script is able to juxtapose a jubilant family film against the historical backdrop of rising Nazi Germany has always impressed me. Though the children can be grating at times, Andrews is charming and lovely, as always, and Plummer helps to create a model male character for the silver screen; one who is masculine and strong, yet altogether loving.

This has always been the "musical for people who aren't fond of musicals" and I, somehow, inadvertently avoided it all the way until my 30s. Naturally, I knew much of this film before I watched it thanks to countless parodies and timeless music. Children's sing-a-long...and Nazis! WTF? The whole hour finale of running-from-the-Nazis sub-plot could be eliminated. And then you could trim another half hour from the songs that are sung more than once, and you've got a nice little 90-minute sing-song for the tots with the happy "rich guy marries his nun-nanny" ending. I still wouldn't like it, but at least it wouldn't be so friggin' strange. Sung a lot of the songs in kindergarten, but I ain't in kindergarten no more.
