Solid "find the monkey" thriller, with a great cast and an army who shoots and bombs without hesitation... Still recommendable despite Hoffmans and Russo's chemistry, which is just about non-excisisting...

Just so you know, you can't make an antidote the way they did in this movie. A vaccine, yeah. But you can't go run give that to the character who's already got the terrible Ebola thing and then expect it to save them. No. It's too late. So, learn science and/or stay away from this movie.

We have all turned into virus experts after covid-19, so we can evaluate the scientific quality of the movie with our newly attained knowledge (though this virus is different from ours). We can also put aside the classical hollywood action movie stuff of the nineties. But after covid-19 the movie has gained a new quality itself. So it's terrifyingly relevant and real now.

Would have worked much better as a horror comedy. The virus transmitting scenes are already suitably hilarious. Add some crotch scratching symptoms, contagious red hair leading to exploding-head fatalities and a few more wacky monkeys. Tagline: Get your infected paws off me you damn dirty monkey!

Yep Contagion's much more realistic, but this is the Hollywood blockbuster version of a real-life nightmare scenario. The goal is to primarily be entertaining, so its stuffed w/ cliches that would surely never happen: the lone hero whose hunches are always right & no one will listen to; the former flame he seeks to reunite with; & an ending w/ not one, but 2 Rambo-style helicopter scenes. But again, this is what H'wood does. It also paints scientists as mostly good & military as mostly bad.

I shouldn't be laughing so hard at the spread of a terrible virus when there's an actual pandemic going on, but man are the infection scenes goofy as all hell. And then after trying to redeem itself with some character drama, Outbreak just goes full action movie and loses all tonal coherency. But hey, apparently helicopters have unlimited fuel and hemorrhagic fevers can rekindle your love life, who knew.

This movie COULD have been good. But, the screenwriters tossed in an 'evil general', improbable marriage melodrama and off-the-wll helicopter battle scene, etc, into the cauldron and let it simmer for a while. What they served to the movie-goer was a mix-mash with a hackneyed "Perils of Pauline" ending. An excellent cast couldn't carry this lead turkey very far.

the opening scene is hilarious. the procedural elements of medical drama are fascinating, but some idiot decided this movie needed military compounds and helicopter chases. the two dogs at the beginning were cute. I have already written more about this movie than it deserves.

Outbreak is one of those summer blockbusters that gives the audience a good tale about some good to great characters played by fantastic actors. The acting in this movie is top notch. The story is engaging throughout. It was a fun movie to watch but it was predictable. Predictable in that way that we want stories to be - the good guy wins and the world is saved. This film was harder to watch in the age of Covid but I still would recommend this to anyone except the most squeamish.

Overdone and melodramatic thriller is nevertheless a fond nostalgia trip for this teenager of the 90s! Performances are enjoyable, but pretty much phoned in, and for what would have been a major studio blockbuster in 1995, the film has a curious made-for-TV look to it, especially in the scenes of the populace dealing with the outbreak. Abrupt shift to action movie in the last third is also somewhat disorienting.

How did people ever consider Dustin Hoffmann a good actor? He is straight awful, as is the wooden Morgan Freeman. Donald Sutherland is phoning it in, and Rene Russo does a good job of generic oblivious but well-intentioned Caucasianish woman in a Hollywood movie. The film loses its own rhythm in order to cram in more scenery-chewing emo scenes and in the end, becomes a muddle. The Spielberg-esque constant soundtrack grates also.

For a while the above-average characterisation had me thinking that this film is a little better than its reputation, but, once the “action” takes over, it quickly descends to a very generic level, with lots of standard silliness. Dustin Hoffman and Kevin Spacey are the pick of the bunch.

Dumbed-down and science-poor movie that's a really exciting movie anyhow. Love the cast, love the fast pace, and there's something to be said for an adventure movie in which the heroes don't have to shoot or kill anybody to save the world. Who else but Dustin Hoffman for this kind of role?

Despite some jarring dialogue this is still a very effective thriller with a marvelous cast, including the late, great J. T. Walsh, who's loving memory earns this movie a +5. Mostly I find it eerie how It depicts with uncanny accuracy what I am convinced is wrong with me, every time I feel a bit under the weather.

Okay in the few moments when it actually is a procedural thriller about preventing an outbreak of a contagious disease. The mandatory superfluous character drama is trite. On top of that most of the runtime is taken up by a bland plotline about the army's involvement. The last half hour which turns into a full-scale action-thriller stretches all believability behind its breaking point.

Made in the days before Morgan Freeman just sat around in films explaining things, O/B is a gripping, tense drama that shows films like Contagion how it should be done. Whilst some of the dialogue sounded a touch too "clever, clever", most of it was spot on, and some of the interchanges are the best you will see in cinema; realistic, emotional and more to the point understandable. Hoffman absolutely shines in this film and his screen relationship with Freeman is just amazing to watch. Great film

This multimillion-dollar B movie works better than you'd expect and was a surprise box-office hit. Despite some drawbacks (including an unlikely action movie climax), this is very well acted and surprisingly intense for a mainstream Hollywood movie of the '90s, with echoes of _The Andromeda Strain_ and _The Crazies_ and some pretty shocking scenes that take this into horror film territory as well.

I remember when I saw it in 1995 I thought it - and the conclusion in particular - had a similar kind of retrospectively-domesticating conventionality in relation to DR STRANGELOVE that 2010: THE YEAR WE MAKE CONTACT had in relation to 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. As if the pilots in STRANGELOVE had turned the plane around at the last minute because they suddenly realised it isn't nice to drop nuclear bombs even if the other side is doing so. Like Hollywood needs to erase a too disturbing Kubrick.

This movie is a guilty pleasure, yeah it's full of cliché and forced scenes, sure it's not believable, but it's so entertaining and fun, also the suspense works very well and has a fantastic cast: Dustin Hoffman's great good guy personality confronting his nemesis Donald Sutherland who doesn't lose his straight face even if he has to kill a whole town and Morgan Freeman just in the between those two, really entertaining.

Science fiction in the subgenre of the fondly remembered The Satan Bug and The Andromeda Strain. The desire in this case to push the premise nearer to reality -- nearer to the nonfiction best-seller The Hot Zone, not to mention nearer to ones from the self-help shelf such as You Just Don't Understand and Do I Have to Give Up Me to Be Loved by You? -- results in a somewhat slowish start, notwithstanding the superfluous boom-boom from a preludial battle zone in Zaire.

Sue me, I really liked this. Outbreak's intro scene approaches the movie with an edgy setting that's in the title and the story, in the end, is pretty well-crafted and entertaining. Hoffman is great as usual and all of the supporting cast is well-picked and everybody serves their part, and the directing isn't too bad either! Probably some unrealistic scenes that will bother some, but in the end, this movie is good.

Nowhere near as good as the cast would suggest, the first half builds up well before the wheels start falling off. Decent direction and the story moves along (too) fast, but you increasingly have to suspend disbelief as the plot becomes more and more far-fetched (successfully tracking down the 'host', the helicopter chase, etc.). Kills a coupla hours if you're not expecting anything too fancy.
