The Ladykillers may anger fans of the original, and it won't be for people who can't tolerate a movie full of caricatures and not realistic people, but for my money it was a compact and funny experience, even if it its second half feels like it goes by far too quickly. It's strange and some of the subplots don't add a whole lot, but most of the film is a lot of fun and it's something I don't feel bad about recommending. This isn't a must-see movie, but it's enjoyable and well worth the time.

Endearingly off-kilter Coen film is one of their least substantial, but as an agreeably silly placeholder it gets the requisite chuckles; the entire cast seems to have been given permission to indulge their hammiest tendencies, which makes it a little exhausting, though Hanks' strange, uncharacteristically campy performance (almost a hyper mix of Alec Guinness and Truman Capote) is certainly worth seeing. It's strange to land on ambivalence when discussing a Coen film, but this one manages it!

I'm generally more forgiving of the lesser Coen Brothers films than other people are. Even their worst stuff, I maintain, is so much more interesting than all the other crap out there that it's at least worth a watch. We just hold them to a higher standard. The Ladykillers ventures the closest of any of their movies to that "not recommended" line, but never crosses it. It's funny and it's smart, but only kinda. Tom Hanks is actually very good though, and saves the movie from mediocrity.

(Haven't seen the original) Irma P. Hall is a delight and J.K. Simmons steals every scene he's in. It has the Coens' typical charm and dark humor but unlike their more balanced comedies you can never really take it seriously, it doesn't ground itself with genuine emotion like a Lebowski/Arizona. What shines through best is the passion for gospel music.

It's ostensibly a heist caper, but everything leading up to the heist itself is terrible and the movie feels like it doesn't really start until there's about 25 minutes left of the runtime. That last 25 minutes is good, but not enough to make up for the rest of the movie. I've always liked the super cartoony Coen films less than the rest, and this is their worst example.

This is trashy and immature, especially by Coen. Bros standards, but I still found it hilarious at times. Tom Hanks is incredible as the smooth-talking, sweetly-Southern professor. Even though his character is so odd and out of place for the time period, his performance is one that I'll never forget. Marlon Wayans is loud and boisterous, as he normally is, but the scenes that pair his obscenity-laced outbursts with Hanks' calm and well-spoken responses are classic, despite their obvious nature.

The last hold out of unseen Coen movies hit as expected. It really is the only film in their canon that I think is bad. Along with The Terminal, 2004 was Tom Hanks' Year-of-the-Accent' and both don't fair well. The Coens do odd characters with expertise, but these aren't characters, they are caricatures. And with that level of camp comes IBS jokes, whatever Ryan Hurst is doing, and false teeth. None of it works well.

Comfortably the Coen Brothers worst film, this is not an improvement on the original and by the end you are asking yourself why it was made at all. It's 50 million times better than most films, but still. Tom Hanks is fine in it, but he's no Alec Guinness. Still, it looks good, and saw it on a plane so it is still the best movie I have ever seen whilst being airborne.

Not as bad as the world has led you to believe. About half of it is tone-deaf caricature and stale black comedy both of which fall flat, but the other half is bizarre, funny and consistently engaging. I particularly like the last 20 minutes, which are tragically hilarious. Tom Hanks' super-Southern-gentleman routine is never not fascinating.

Academic blowhard Colonel Sanders: The movie. The Ladykillers is a good movie, but that's about it. It's entirely forgettable for a reason I can't put my finger on. It's enjoyable enough, but its somehow simultaneously too generic and too quirky for its own good. Just like the Coen's previous film Intolerable Cruelty in that fact: it's not BAD, per se, but it's pretty damn forgettable.

Feels like two movies shoved together awkwardly: the loquacious, circumlocutory, sporadically entertaining Southern-fried heist, and the tone-deaf, cringe-inducing, (attempted) AAVE-riddled gang-sploitation disaster of whatever Marlon Wayans was doing. Tom Hanks is not great, but he looks like PSH in Capote when juxtaposed with the nightmare of "gangsta" Wayans, who drags the movie down from...somewhere hovering above average.

I think I should have learned by now that listening to critics is a terrible waste of time I could be spending watching all the great movies they hate. I put this one off for a long time because many considered it to be crap. The Critics are dead wrong. I loved this movie. I think its my favorite Tom Hanks role ever. The whole movie just works on such a cerebral note that I was smiling throughout. So much good in the movie, but what solidifies it all is Tom Hanks. Thank you Joel and Ethan Coen.

After seventeen years, I decided to give this a refresher. Turns out, it's not terrible. It has no interest in being a pratfall fest a la Home Alone, but rather traces the original while admirably keeping its own unique identity. Some of it is a tad dated, but Hanks is having a deliciously good time and it's difficult not to have one with him. Overall, I don't think there's enough blood pumping through this to match the Coens' usual quality, but I think that's the material's fault.

Feels like an attempt to recapture the magic that made so many of the lines in The Big Lebowski popular, but here it just falls completely flat. The cast do well, but it's the material that's the problem - I don't even know what happened here. It's a total demerit on an otherwise respectable filmography. It's boring, with an odd fixation on some aspects of black culture which just seem really out-dated and embarrassing.

I usually like Coen Brothers movies and can't quite clarify why I like them. This is one of the few cases where I was lukewarm, and I once again can't figure out why that's the case. The movie was funny throughout, and the acting and writing were stellar. Yet I walked away feeling a bit ambivalent about the whole thing. Regardless, I thought the cast was hilarious- Tom Hanks channeling a Poe-obsessed Colonel Sanders was great, and the other characters also had humorous quirks.

I've had good and bad experiences with the Coens before, and given the poor reviews I was apprehensive about this one. However, I found it amusing and enjoyable, and without the pretentiousness of some of their other efforts. In addition, the music was top notch and Hanks, who I don't ususally like, was genuinely superb. Ignore the nay-sayers and giove this one a try!

I was prepared to come into this review by ripping on Hanks for his inability to cherry pick only decent roles, but who can blame him if he did this shit because it was the Coen brothers. Wow. Scary. Like in, am I gonna die because this film is so bad-scary. It's a freak show, both in terms of acting, characters (how bad a script can you possibly write?) and stupid action. YES, Tom Hanks manages to pull off speaking in tounges, but who is he? Has he got charm? No. Has he got intelligence? No. Is he fun? Never was, never will be. Thing is, none of these characters are interesting. None. Full stop. Some striking images on the bridge and that's it. Enough wasted breath..

The Coens seem a bit complacent with their black humour in this feature, which is lazily scripted and acted, despite the absorbing cinematography by Roger Deakins.

Expected better from the Coens. It's interesting visually (although bordering on 'artistic') but the script is almost as boring as the original. Tom Hanks here, like Guinness in the original, isn't funny.
