Not a must-see (apart from for hard-boiled Carpenter-fans), but a cool, little "horror"-flick with a possible message concerning our unhealthy consumer society beneath its jolly surface.

If you think a demon car isn't much of a premise for a movie, this is one that can prove you wrong. John Carpenter really milks every last drop of potential from Christine and fetishises every tiny detail of her in myriad close-ups. The editing of the kill scenes really is a masterclass in creating a great deal of suspense and excitement out of not much action at all. Carpenter also pulls a star turn out of Keith Gordon, the nerd-turned-greaser. Predictable story arc vs directorial expertise.

At its best this feels like a masculine counterpart to Carrie but the production isn't quite up to Carpenter's highest standards, which draws too much attention to the pulpy silliness of its premise. That's not to say that it's bad though & it contains some great scenes & rare dynamics. Indeed if you can appreciate what comes with "pulp cinema" this has a clever elegance to it. What probably throws most people off is that the horror (if that's even what it's going for) isn't very effective.

This movie isn't scary at all, but it is all you want out of a campy 80's horror movie. The performances were so-so, and the cinematography wasn't always the most compelling. But god damn, I live for that scene of Christine on fire while chasing down one of Arnie's bullies. That scene alone contribute half of the points to this review, and it makes me think that Radiohead's Karma Police video must have been paying some sort of homage to this movie.

Carpenter does a great job and the car SPFX are genuinely impressive, but the script is weak and the general concept is 'uber' goofy in its presentation. I bet this could have snuck by with a PG-13 if they said "cunt" less.

Look, just cause the hood falls on someone's hand and a dude has a heart attack behind the wheel doesn't automatically make a car evil! More seriously, Christine lacks a certain coherency, especially earlier on, that would make it stronger, but there's still some fun to be had here. It's not deep, but the last forty minutes or so are pretty thrilling at times, so it evens out in my book.

I wish it had dug a bit further into the Ship of Theseus element of the story. It opens with the suggestion that the car is evil right off the assembly line (complete w/ "Bad to the Bone" needle drop) but this kid who buys it 30 years later restores it with a bunch of scrap parts. So is it just an evil chassis? Or is it the idea of the car, the naming of it that imbues it with a spirit?

John Carpenter takes on a King story with his own unique style in Christine. The film is well shot and scored. It may be a little bit too vulgar at times. Christine is still a fun, if not all that re-watchable, film in the King canon.

Carpenter and King make a fun match, and I think the creativity involved in this is worth noting. But maybe it's for the best that Carpenter never rose to Spielbergian heights. This film is almost too clinical for his style, too manufactured, and the pace and length are felt because of it. I admire Carpenter's rough-and-tumble approach when he's got to pull rabbits out of hats without any money behind him. This is mostly good, with some pretty great bits, but it tends to putter.

Carpenter's take on Stephen King's novel is a thoroughly entertaining flick, just not scary one bit. Director's style is evident, as is that 80's feel that I adore. It is a teen movie, driven (pun intended) by Keith Gordon character's dramatic transformation from a timid geek to a cocky psycho. The plot explores an all-consuming obsession. To make things interesting, a car takes an active part in that. I believe this film is all it could have been; script just wasn't that good to begin with.

The practical effects of the car plus some sweet shot compositions don't do enough. It's still about a malevolent KILLER CAR. That would actually be the easiest part to get over, but the pacing is all off and the character development is really paltry. The shrug of an ending is possibly the worst. "Gee, I dunno guys, let's go get a drink or something, I guess."

After years of watching it on tv growing up I always put this as average, 'middle tier' Carpenter but the new remastered blu ray really brings out the atmosphere and fetishistic shots of the car, all the sheen and the lens flare its beautiful. Keith Gordon is a little miscast and awkward as the lead but its always nice to see a mainstream genre film exploring male issues and masculinity through a complex, coded-gay protagonist.

John Carpenter's visual flair and aptitude for practical effects are always a joy to behold, but a book that actually has some depth to it gets stripped of all deeper meaning. A couple of the performances are moderately entertaining in a very "Stephen King movie" kind of way, but for me this is one of Carpenter's lesser 80's efforts.

I read the book when I was in my teens and the film does a decent job of capturing the creepy atmosphere. Although for some reason I'm more willing to accept the silliness in a horror novel than I am in a film, because it is very silly at times, and the acting is not great. Some fun scenes, though, especially Flamin' Christine. Just switch your brain off before you watch.

A chilling indictment of an entire generation, in which a car becomes an actual death machine, wreaking havoc on a squeaky-clean California suburb. The film is always remarkably smart even when it sounds stupid on paper, and Carpenter directs with a finesse that elevates the material to genuine greatness. I knew the movie was working when I, a guy who neither has a driver's license nor gives a shit about cars, reacted with sadness and empathy during the first time Christine, a car, is destroyed.

Shame on me for thinking this was second tier Carpenter. Christine may not have been the passion project that his other films were around this era, but it is an absolute showcase of the filmmaker's talent. Though the characters are all archetypes, lead actor Keith Gordon shows considerable range. What's most fascinating is the suspenseful approach it takes to the coming-of-age genre. Better than any film about a killer car has any right to be, but surprisingly tame for a Carpenter/King combo. I went in expecting violence and horror by the bucket load and what I got was a charming high-school drama, subtly sinister and slow burning. Characters make some questionable logic leaps in the final act, but things are mostly well developed, and Carpenter kicks ass with the score and atmosphere. I'm not one for gore, but some OTT deaths could have taken this a lot further.

Rebel Without a Cause meets Halloween. Clearly an assignment for Carpenter, who was desperate for work after The Thing flopped, but he created a visually compelling film with great widescreen compositions and dollies that are slick and keep this inherently silly story moving along with efficiently controlled rhythm. The acting is hit and miss, and the death scenes are rather tame, but the finale in a gloomy garage is quite intense, and the effects of Christine restoring herself are well done.

What it has going for it is a whole lot of fun, which is boosted by enjoyable performances & lots of clever visuals, as well as some extremely clever work in creating the character of Christine- the radio, the lights, the manipulation of her owner, etc. But, it's far from flawless & has a number of issues, such as a very weak female lead who's often more like a prop than a character & a few odd plot points that could use more explaining. It's definitely worth a look, but is far from great.

This wasn't one of John Carpenter's better movies. The script had some fun moments in it. I'm sure that this would have been a fun date night movie at the time for teenagers or twenty-year-olds but it just doesn't hold up. I understand that the premise is supposed to be goofy but it's also supposed to be scary at moments and I didn't feel any fear throughout. The whole story was pretty boring from beginning to end. Once again, I did like some of the high school hijinx that happened but that's it

The entire premise is obviously as stupid as it gets (even the scenes of Christine fixing itself, visually impressive at first, becoming comical later on), but that classic era Carpenter style somehow makes it watchable. His signature music of course, but also a visual/tonal/mood style that’s very reminiscent of Halloween, to where I was actually surprised it wasn’t shot by Dean Cundey. Also enjoyed Keith Gordon’s transformation throughout the movie.

This horror film doesn't really have any real scares, and could also do with some more creative kills (crushing someone or making them choke isn't heaps exciting, unlike running over someone while on fire). But it's a fun film with some excellent craft with some of its effects and lighting, and the blow-hard main character's growing attachment to Christine is engaging and adds an extra level to a film about a murderous car.
