Maze Runner: Run Harder is about a group of people who run away from one place to another place only to discover that the new place was also on their list of places they need to run away from. Repeat. Now you're ready to watch the third installment, Maze Runner: Running Backwards. Alan Tudyk was the highlight and Giancarlo Esposito is born to be a great addition to any cast (no matter how poor the cast).

No amount of maze running could prepare these kids for this! "This" being running in a zombie desert, running in a zombie mall, running in a zombie skyscraper, and running in a zombie-less firefight. Decisions made by all characters in this story show us why responsibility regulated to 16-year-olds should not extend beyond the wrapping of hamburgers in brightly colored wax-paper.

Feels like a patchwork mess of better sci-fi movies (Fury Road, Star Wars, and Serenity come to mind). A lot of running, a lot of mediocre cinematography, a lot of predictable or nonsensical twists. Gus Fring and Wash are standouts in a cast that otherwise makes it pretty hard to care about the characters (Jojen and Littlefinger are alright too).

Fun and enjoyable piece of dystopia goes on too long, but is faster paced and more action packed than its predecessor; pretty derivative at times, with most of its key action scenes/story points done before in other movies (THE LOST WORLD glass sequence comes to mind), but Ball manages to keep things fairly breezy, and even gives wonderfully sinister Gillen and crackpot Esposito some fun stuff to do (Clarkson is wasted again, unfortunately). Core cast of young adults acquit themselves nicely.

An entertaining pastiche. I'm not sure whether or not I would have dug it as much if I had not been recovering from a hangover, but it was exactly the movie I needed to see. Anyway, I rate the fact that LordBeefJerk has this in his Tier 9 when all of my other kumpels has it in Tiers 1-3 a 70.

Follows the "and now for something completely different" approach, which not coincidentally takes away the majority of the appeal. It didn't really matter in the first one that the whole fictional universe that Dashner made up didn't make any sense (because it was pretty much all just the maze), but when you double down on the toddler logic in your movie by just tacking on some post-apocalyptic landscape and a faux zombie virus--you can call that fleshing out, but I call it a shit show.

As others have mentioned, there seems to be an inordinate amount of running going on here. The anticipation of whether any of this running will occur in a maze was too much for me to bear, so I had to turn it off.

Outside of an excellent scene when one of the characters dies, it's not a movie that does anything exceptionally well or poorly. It's one of those movies where everything is competent; the acting, directing, cinematography, music, etc is all decent. There are some wonky leaps of logic and the lightning scene is bullshit "tension" but I had a good time.

Predictable - and then not. Full of cliches - but it doesn't matter. Number two in series - but indeed another genre. One of the things I especially enjoyed (having no knowledge of the books) is how the "bad guys" are debatable. It's hard to point out what made me like it, but the zombies I could have been out!! *Good

I think this creative team sat down and said "Every cliche you can think of, let's get it in there". This is less a criticism... it's almost an accomplishment! They hit all the bases, no matter how obscure or quasi-racist. I dug this one, perhaps a bit more than the first, which I admittedly remember little about. At least this one went full "Last of Us" which is at least memorable. The new characters were welcomed additions, and this does its job of entertaining and setting up the third film.

If you sat through the first one and want to see the next stage, all I can report is that this one isn't as boring, even if it's still not even technically "good." It'll pass the time, giving you some decent action and at least one relatively surprising twist, even if the acting still has a lot to be desired, the story is still a mess, and the characters have nothing to them. The Scorch Trials isn't painful, so it gets a tentative pass from me.

The Scorch Trials is a pretty interesting follow up in my opinion. The first act of this film was actually really interesting, and after that the film shows its struggles. The middle act of this film feels pretty meh, and acts as sort of time waster. Lacking much impact, and meaningful substance up to the final act which, again, much like the first one, sequel baits itself. Unfortunately, this didn't seem to have a singular direction and was all over the place. Decent, but fails on its own

Not as good as the first one but still plenty entertaining. This is more generic and felt too Hollywood/Resident Evil for my liking. The Gladers don't get enough screen time and the new additions aren't fleshed out at all. I still have hope for the third film but we'll have to wait and see.

It's alright, but I liked the first one better. There is some good here and I particularly enjoyed the trippy party scene with a nice accompanying soundtrack (As the Rush Comes), but other than that it's all fairly standard stuff, lots of clichés, things that have been done better (but also worse) in other films. Acting and writing are subpar, but again there are worse films. There's more action than in the first one but I'm not sure if that is an improvement. Strongly disliked the zombies!

It's all aggressively uninvolving gobbledygook until the final fifteen minutes, and by then you'll very likely be too bored/annoyed/confused to give much of a shit. There's very much a sense of "we gotta get through this to get to the next chapter, so...hang on" abounding, which has become an increasing problem with all these YA adaptations--they've got too much plot for one movie, but not enough for three. Rent it and fast-forward to the final act.

It mimics The Empire Strikes Back in structure and feel. And it owes a bit to Serenity via an Edward Snowden/John Brown esque lead aiming to misbehave. But this flick isn't as strong philosophically, cinematically, or in terms of fun as other nerdy YA adaptations or fanboy films. There's a great, emotionally impactful death scene played for a quiet moment. And the action and horror are intense. But if you watch this once that'll be enough as you wait for the last flick in the trilogy.

I didn't think this was bad but I can see where many are being turned off. I personally enjoyed it. Some of the scenes are really well-directed and the acting is also pretty good. It's a little too long I will admit. As I have mentioned, I think YA novels shouldn't be made into movies because they really don't translate too well all of the time. I'm sure fans of the books will find some enjoyment here.

Pure trash with a budget. Honestly embarrassing, who got away with writing this crap? I hope they dont still have a career. The cliches are so frequent and cringe inducing you would not be off base thinking they made this movie through picking notes from a hat full of common tropes etc. Its offensively corny. Not a fan of the first film, which was also pretty eyerolling sometimes, but the first one is VASTLY superior still, to this hunk of pure garbage. And the first one is only watchable.

The Maze Runner series of movies are like the books but remixed. I'm not sure if I like that or not. This second movie cranks things up a notch from the first movie by adding a villainous group of people called Cranks to the world who are like zombies but worse. Most of the characters from the first movie return to get through the latest challenge set up by Wicked. The addition of Esposito and Salazar to this movie helps bring some more life to the story. I wasn't happy with the ending.

Action! Are we safe? I can smell danger... Action! Repeat this formula for more than two hours, take the boring characters from the first part and try to hide as much as possible that the story is barely there. Some upsides here as well: The zombies look ok, despite the CGI and the bad guys still work for WCKD which actually stands for World Catastrophe Killzone Department. Metal on!

Starts out exactly the same way as the first: The guys have a good thing going and then Thomas has to mess it up. Urgh, Thomas, we can't take you anywhere. Then there are zombies, although they don't call them that. And betrayal. And I dunno, I was mostly thinking about how casually dapper Littlefinger looked in that turtleneck and waiting for him to have more screentime. The boobytrapped record player was neat though. An okay movie.

It was a bit of a trial making it through this movie. It was just running, with more running. It wasn't maze running though, so I feel cheated with the title. The kids in this movie are all really annoying and make some pretty boneheaded moves. Once again, another Hunger Games / Divergent / City of Bones... Young Adult book mess. I blame Harry Potter on films and books like these because of its immense success. All the actors in this film are pretty much no-names...

It is a solid follow up with some intense action scenes and some decent plot developmemt. Dylan O'Brien is a good choice as the lead actor as the intensity of the action scene is always displayed on his face as he runs from the oncoming danger. The ending like many other middle parts sets up the end very nicely and that is all you can really want from installmemt 2 of a trilogy. It improved on the faults from the first and put down a solid foundation for the final part. Solid film all around.

Critics rated this as lower, but my hopes were raised when many people stated this sequel as better than the first. In my opinion, it's not, it's worse. The first maze runner was made decent by its interesting plot, which is lost here. Just like Divergent, the Maze Runner loses steam on its second movie. Pros consist of good special effects, and Aiden Gillen. Cons consist of a more lackluster story with generic moments, the other issues that plague the first film, and not enough Aiden Gillen.

So its a modern version of an 80s camp postapocalyptic b movie. I can live with that. The heroes run from monsters and nefarious characters alike and run through capture and escape routines almost as much as the characters from She. Wes Ball directs action well so that earns it an extra 5 points

This sequel didn't improve on the first one, unfortunately. There was nothing overtly bad in it, just a whole lot of bland, derivative and cliché stuff. The performances were okay, and I did like seeing Giancarlo Esposito and Alan Tudyk. The individual scenes are fine, but they really don't add up to much. It just felt like killing time until the final part of the trilogy, which will hopefully have a good ending for the series.

The Maze Runner, a brilliant little movie, goes nowhere in its second outing. It becomes Walking Dead meets Divergent with mixed results. The kids are constantly running from armies and zombies while yelling "Come on!" throughout. There's little narrative or suspense this time. The acting is fine and the sets are fully realized, but the world of the Maze Runner becomes a typical doomsday YA affair. And what exactly is the point of the kids in the maze after all?

The Scorch Trails runs with its absurdist characters and plot to deliver a film that is visually impressive, yet intellectually empty. This sequel is at best a homage to other film, or more likely just incredibly derivative. For a film that begins in its second act, it has lots of action, breakneck pace, plenty of appearances of actors from stuff you liked much more, and scenes that seem like non sequiturs. Resident Evil for Tweens isn't beyond enjoyment, it just lacked depth.

It's not unusual for popcorn munchers like this to concentrate more on whiz-bang than cinematic philosophy, of course. That's why they're called popcorn munchers. But given that the whiz-bang here is so violent, and the foul language between (and during) action sequences so scorching (especially for a kid's flick), while watching it I started to suspect that maybe WCKD had been messing around with things yet again. Reasons for running ex machina - The movie. Hyperconvenient plot is hyperconvenient. over9000. At least. Infinitely less self-contained than the first one. Even considering that one's ending. Damn cool casting, though. And nice post-apocalyptic visuals. But...as cool as the story may be, it's just waaaaay too much for one movie. For me Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) worked better then the first one. The mood inside the maze felt too much like cheap TV adventure to me. Here outside the maze it's more the typical blockbuster design and that looks better when there isn't all that much personality running around. The story manages to built itself slowly up and left off with at least some interest in seeing the 3rd installment coming in 2017.

There are no actual trials here; just a pitiful attempt at survival horror with a cast full of weak child-actors. The writers seem to have forgotten that the only reason the first film worked was the scale and spectacle of the Maze. That's all gone now; the production design and artwork deserve credit but there's no compelling central concept to carry the abysmal script.
