"In Paterson, that's just the way things go..." Delightful little film that might be Jarmusch's best since Ghost Dog, playing off a number of themes he's explored before (and even bringing back one of the actors from Mystery Train) to create a tension, an expectation that SOMETHING will happen, but when it does it all seems part of ordinary life anyway. Maybe in a time where controversy and assholery are praised, the most subversive theme to explore is contentedness.

For a film that pushes poetry as its main selling point - both visually and narratively - I strangely found the film to be anything but. Serene yet unconvincing, the film eventually stumbles under the weight of its own contrived lyricism as we follow the main character through a series of strained encounters, half-hearted exchanges and countless interactions with his insufferable girlfriend. Props to that awesome dog for making this film semi-tolerable.

I don't think any film has caused me to realise my inherent classism as much as this one where I spent the first third like "lol so this guy is tired of his dull broke-ass life right" when in fact the movie isn't about that at all.

This is a beautiful film, structurally rooted in the day-to-day routine of its protagonist. It's about the mundane joys of loving your job and finding self-affirming hobbies. It's about the phenomenological experience of coincidence, the recognition of random events as insinuating or portending something of importance even at the modest scale of an individual life. But it's also about how these inform our acts of creation, self-expression, attempts to beautify the world, if only for oneself.

As someone who has previously been allergic to this filmmaker's striving for "coolness", I found this movie to be pleasantly surprising. While it might be accused of a surfeit of whimsy, this is mostly a charming exploration of art as a kind of doubling of existence, of the "there is another world but it is in this one" (Paul Éluard) variety, focused on the small-scale specificities of microcosmic localities (the house, the neighbourhood, etc.) and a perhaps traumatised ex-military protagonist.

not for the first time with post-80s jarmusch, the comically broad nature of these situations and side characters, while endearing, does exude a whiff of laziness. and yet, it supports this idea that life is by turns absurd, repetitive, mundane or even painful, and all there is to do is pick up a pen or a book and teach yourself how to elevate it. there's a lovely and rare open-eyed, open-hearted quality to this film which would work in a double bill with jem cohen's MUSEUM HOURS.

a real gem, so uncommodified and sincere that you almost forget the absurd humour and surrealism that underpin it. Plot points are telegraphed but it doesn't matter: the film resets your expectations, and then neatly & sweetly confirms and surpasses them

This is one of the most beautiful films I've seen in a while. Another great addition to Jarmusch's filmography. I loved the very deliberate dialogue, especially with the poetry. I really enjoyed its slow pace, and contemplative nature. I was often contemplating what certain things meant or symbolised. I liked the "beauty in the mundane" idea in there, and the sort of artistic spirit. Driver was excellent. I don't think it would affect everyone like this, but I thought it was wonderful.

I really don't approve Jarmusch's latest films, because he always makes his characters geek out how 'intellectual' and 'cool' they are; which is nothing but an update of shallow hipster culture. I don't need to shown off with Frank O'Hara or alike, I need to see a humble, poetic and original story as it's promised. What does Jarmusch preach? "Enjoy your petit miserable lives instead of transforming your daily experiences into revolutionary acts." No, thanks, I already have my own poetry.

Small scale character pieces about modest lives are difficult to pull off. Jarmusch works against the usual heroic depictions of working class heroes with Paterson, a bus driver who writes poetry on the side, but there is a slightness that seems inevitable when they are not tied to a broader vision of life. It is engaging mostly due to Driver, who draws attention via his unusual features and subtle gestures, but the film breaks down when the bus does an hour through and never fully recovers.

Love the pacing, the vibes, the lack of incident. Can’t stand Jarmusch’s dialogue. All that self-conscious name-dropping, lame humour, over-explaining, it just drags everything else down with it. The poetry sucks too

A week in the life of the most trivial and fascinating guy (bus driver, poet, nice husband, dog owner, beer drinker who sees twins everywhere). Jarmusch's detail-obsessed, multicultural and referential filmmaking gives a glimpse of life's little enchantments and boring stuff. A little too offbeat, but either way a charming chronicle about our relationship with art -- when do we become artists? is it living a kind of art? Mumblecore done right, with no emotional shortcuts or edifying lessons.

Adam Driver gives one of the loveliest and least likely to be rewarded performances of the year in Paterson. Why least likely, you ask? Because Driver's indelibly moving portrayal is so lived-in and lyrical you hardly recognize it as acting.

I'm finding it hard to describe why this film was so immersive for me. At the very least it does a phenomenal job of realizing the city of Paterson through simple poetic gestures, and a main character who embodies the simplicity with grace. Also, the first film that Adam Driver has won me over.

A most necessary film in a culture increasingly oriented toward dehumanization and despair, PATERSON is an exaltation of quiet decency. Like its introverted, painfully normal protagonist, it is special in small, unremarkable ways, like in the snippet of an overheard conversation, or a shared jest between a married couple. A cinematic fanfare for the common man.

Pure poetry of live that indulges in the small magic of daily events in the face of individual hardships. Jarmusch once again proves his great sense for detail in this beautiful, humurous and tranquil work. The movie also features the best passive agressive dog acting I've seen.

Worth it just for the scene with the kid reading her poem. But I love the dramatization of this man's daily rhythms, the way poetry can be found in everyday things, and the way not everything in life needs to be perfect for one to find simple, unassuming joy and to create beautiful things in the midst of it. I am glad this film exists.

Jarmusch does here a beautiful portrayal of intimacy, he captures the small, slow and routined universe in such a lovely way. At first, i found it bit too slow & was annoyed by the female character (who seems to be living in some parallel universe, completely broken off all things pragmatic). But then you realise that how you see her is in fact just how the main character sees her. The film has all these small quirks and it just revolves around the poetry of it all, which makes it beautiful.

Adam Driver is really good (as is the dog Marvin), but beyond that there's just not that much to grab on to. The main problem here is just how slow and plodding the pace is. On top of the pacing issues it has a very repetitive structure. I get what Jarmusch is going for. The film does have a poetic nature to it, but the poeticism isn't highlighted in a remotely entertaining way. That being said the film does have a very specific nature to it that I'm sure some will absolutely fall in love with.

A real slice-of-life film that gladly throws out many storytelling rules so it can maximize its life-likeness, this is a very relatable film that's so vague with its intentions it can leave you feeling uplifted, depressed, or both. Driver's character in this is fairly similar to his in While We're Young, given the opposition towards new technology, but this film succeeds more in evoking a very old-hat tradition through Paterson (the character and the town).

This is very much an arty film - its like a love letter to poetry and its also very much centered on mundanity, on the local area of the titular character, Paterson, the issues found at his workplace and how certain events can have an effect on them. I liked the dog, Marvin - he's a cute English Bulldog who features in a few scenes. Oh and also, I liked when Paterson gives voice over/narrative reading out the poems in his mind, said lines appear on screen - some more thoughtful than others. Good

A pleasant, methodical slice-of-life film with plenty of time devoted to its well-rounded characters. The highlight of the film is the poetry, and the lyrical approach to how it is slowly invented, recogitated and written down. The comic relief provided by the wife's scenes was also a welcome inclusion. Nice as it was, the film did not ultimately go anywhere or present a particularly satisfying story or conclusion. Paterson was a good character but I'd leave out the monotonous parts of his life.

Araf'ta yaşayan Paterson'un Danté kartpostalını elinde evirip çevirip "Danté Alliegri, italyan..." demesi cok sıkıcıydı. Bu sıkıcılık Paterson'un güzel karakteriyle birleştiğinde filmin sorduğu birçok soruyu ortaya saçıyor? "Bir insan hayatın akışında neleri kaçırabilir?"

This mesmerizing, sublime dreamscape of peculiarity feels disconnected from reality just perfectly enough to still be relatable while creating a mesmerizing utopian imagination of human connection. The writing and tone is unrecognizably humorous, melancholy, and offbeat. Paterson is a cinematic understatement. Bearing only a few of the author's usual stylistic marks, it eschews the brash and bold in order to emphasise what you might call immersive banalities: the poetry of everyday life, I was told. This is only partially successful. Lighting and cinematography are quite beautiful, and there are excellent sequences of superimposed imagery, but these overtly poetic elements are nestled within a banal film, when they should have been infused.

For a drama, Paterson in surprisingly undramatic. Jarmusch manages to capture everyday mundanity very well, while delivering a third act that showcases resilience to personal devastation. Beautiful laid back movie about living a simple life and being creative just for the sake of expressing oneself. Especially the contrast between Paterson, who is completely content with his life, and his gf, who has a new big (impossible) dream every day, makes this a movie for this generation. The constant namedropping feels at times too much like Jarmusch talking trough a (minor) character. Adam Driver is excellent, and so is. Farahini.

Paterson is rated R for a handful of f-words, and there is a bit of sensuality in play as well. With just a wee bit of restraint, the movie could've easily been PG. Not that families would flock to this quiet, introspective work anyway. Paterson is enjoyable without being entertaining. It's a shyly thoughtful story that asks its viewers to stretch themselves and dream a little ... but to not be in a rush to quit their day jobs. (pluggedin.com)

Wants to be so meaningful in depiction meaninglessness that it becomes a bit stiff. This shows especially in its forced cuteness and connection of events and dialogues. Paterson joins the club for the most boring movies of all time. I'm not somebody who likes mind numbing action or juvenile comedy. Paterson doesn't have those, thankfully. But you'll watch the character doing almost the same thing every day. Nothing changes. Not even his voice... i think he could get shot and his voice would remain monotone while he asks for help. He might not even ask. There's no point in the movie and every character is boring. Maybe great if you like Seinfeld.

Jarmusch has been so full of shit since day one. He thinks he's some great, unheard, common man poet, but his writing is pedestrian and disconnected, his commentary is elitist and pretentious, and he has no visual style. Mostly, he just has absolutely nothing to say. This film is junk. It's like he turns on the camera and just tells the actors to wing it with some photos he thought looked cool thrown into the mix. Focuses on a normal life in Paterson, but while the characters are likable it becomes unrealistic to insist on such surface characters and a stiff script. It's often about complacency and so dedicated to that that the movie stays in one place too. What do this couple have in common? What does this say about the world that's fresh or substantial? Will a movie about the most basic life ever make anyone see the world differently? If people aren't changing, is it really real life? Who needed this?
