Enjoyed this immensely. This seems like one of those movies that almost everyone can relate to in some way. Jonathan’s struggles with prioritizing his aspirations with his relationships and other roadblocks were felt and well realized. Garfield himself is really at his best here. His musical talents are commendable, but his acting is DAMN good. I for one really liked the directing and story structure. This kind of music is more my speed than standard musicals. One of this past year’s best.

Okay but the gay part wasn't necessary.

Garfield is fantastic and the film did a good job of selling the thought process of a theater kid to someone who really does not enjoy musicals

I had a visceral fight-or-flight response to the first musical number. Every fiber of my being was screaming "GET THIS AWAY FROM ME!" So I had to jump ship like 5 minutes in

This week I watched a movie in which Andrew Garfield lives in New York, is struggling between balancing his passion projects and private responsibilities, interacts with his terminally ill best friend from childhood and loses a relationship with a girlfriend who has an exciting job opportunity elsewhere... but enough about The Amazing Spider-Man 2!! tick tick BOOM goes the dynamite!

I'm not a theater kid, but this made me understand the mania of the whole process with a smile on my face. This is great story telling with such energy and exuberance. Garfield is really good.

This could be a whole lot more obnoxious, so I consider it a victory that I actually both teared up and laughed at more than one point.

Garfield is strong and the theatre framing works as both tribute to the original “rock monologue” and as a narrative device, but emotively the film is more effective at building stress than releasing it in any catharsis. Some of this is caused by a white, straight protagonist with (somewhat clichéd, though still engaging) artistic struggles that are never quite portrayed as a marginalizing agent as strong as the skin colours or sexual preferences of those around him, but often come close.

honestly quite decent, but just a tad overly sentimental

Garfield saves so many bad directing instincts here, he deserves a purple heart.

Dreams, heartbreak, happiness and tears. An emotional portrait of a tragic life filled with the pursuit of success, accompanied by inspiring songs. Andrew Garfield is fantastic.

For a musical, the set design is quite ok. All the rest is just a musical.. the standard type of songs, the franatical dialogueing and bodylanguage, the hasty cameramovements and editing, and a lot, a very lot of effort is invested in getting long shots of mouths hanging stupidly wide open between words and after every sentence.

If you haven't seen the original stage play of the same name (like me), you may be confused with how this story is told. Once I understood the dynamic and the premise, I found myself really enjoying this. Garfield is absolutely stunning in this, and the plays the late and great Jonathan Larson very convincingly. The music is all very well-written and performed, and I thought Miranda's direction was super solid for a debut film. I give 9 existential crisis' out of 10.

Go watch the few seconds Alexandra Shipp sings in "Come to Your Senses" on Youtube. It's the only few seconds of this movie worth watching even if it is a travesty that she didn't get to sing the whole thing.

Self-indulgent drivel, much like Larson's only other work, 'Rent'. The music is bland and soulless. The lyrics are total tripe. This is one of those deals where Broadway and Hollywood praise a work just because it promotes homosexuality.

As someone who has never seen "Rent" and could probably happily live out the rest of his days never seeing it, this is not really a movie made for me.
