Enjoyed this immensely. This seems like one of those movies that almost everyone can relate to in some way. Jonathan’s struggles with prioritizing his aspirations with his relationships and other roadblocks were felt and well realized. Garfield himself is really at his best here. His musical talents are commendable, but his acting is DAMN good. I for one really liked the directing and story structure. This kind of music is more my speed than standard musicals. One of this past year’s best.

This week I watched a movie in which Andrew Garfield lives in New York, is struggling between balancing his passion projects and private responsibilities, interacts with his terminally ill best friend from childhood and loses a relationship with a girlfriend who has an exciting job opportunity elsewhere... but enough about The Amazing Spider-Man 2!! tick tick BOOM goes the dynamite!

Self-indulgent drivel, much like Larson's only other work, 'Rent'. The music is bland and soulless. The lyrics are total tripe. This is one of those deals where Broadway and Hollywood praise a work just because it promotes homosexuality.

The potential for greatness is there. I liked the style, the mood, and I really liked Garfield, but the execution was lacking, and I was never really invested in the characters.

Go watch the few seconds Alexandra Shipp sings in "Come to Your Senses" on Youtube. It's the only few seconds of this movie worth watching even if it is a travesty that she didn't get to sing the whole thing.

For a musical, the set design is quite ok. All the rest is just a musical.. the standard type of songs, the franatical dialogueing and bodylanguage, the hasty cameramovements and editing, and a lot, a very lot of effort is invested in getting long shots of mouths hanging stupidly wide open between words and after every sentence.

Not a fan of musicals, but it’s well made in a lot of aspects. Garfield is great, and the supporting characters and storylines are just as captivating as the main one. The musical moments are mostly fine, though I personally disliked the diner scene and the one that was interspersed with an argument, but I liked the swimming pool scene and the parts shortly after the workshop. Fans of Rent or musicals in general will probably love it.

If you haven't seen the original stage play of the same name (like me), you may be confused with how this story is told. Once I understood the dynamic and the premise, I found myself really enjoying this. Garfield is absolutely stunning in this, and the plays the late and great Jonathan Larson very convincingly. The music is all very well-written and performed, and I thought Miranda's direction was super solid for a debut film. I give 9 existential crisis' out of 10.

Garfield is strong and the theatre framing works as both tribute to the original “rock monologue” and as a narrative device, but emotively the film is more effective at building stress than releasing it in any catharsis. Some of this is caused by a white, straight protagonist with (somewhat clichéd, though still engaging) artistic struggles that are never quite portrayed as a marginalizing agent as strong as the skin colours or sexual preferences of those around him, but often come close.

Yes beautiful amazing yes. If you liked RENT you’ll love this. If you haven’t seen RENT, go watch RENT first because I think it make this movie even more touching. Even if you can’t get into the story, which I loved, the vocals alone make this worth a watch.

Strong lead performance carried this for me. Otherwise, the music was hit or miss for me. Interesting chapter of his life to focus on, and it worked as a story. This might have been a bit better if someone else helped direct it.

Everything about this movie is great except the outstanding bits that remind you it was directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Who allowed that many Hamilton references in a show that predates Hamilton's existence? Andrew Garfield is wonderful. I was most disappointed to see one of the most iconic, comedic songs bizarrely inter-cut with a dramatic scene. I guess watch it if you like Andrew Garfield and don't have any preexisting fondness for the show.

So much of this is impressive. Lin-Manuel Miranda's direction is great, but it is Andrew Garfield's performance in this that steals the show. Just reminding us how great he can actually be. The story structure and blend of musical numbers are also well done.

Andrew Garfield gives a decent performance as the main character, someone passionate about getting their theatrical story to the big stage. The songs aren't bad but I felt neutral about the overall plot. If your a fan of musicals then you'll enjoy this. It's def. cheesy, though that's not always a bad thing. Its also immersive and entertaining but not a film I'm likely to remember much about or want to revisit. Not a bad watch, not a great one, this is worth seeing if it sounds like it'll appeal

Jonathan Larsson'un Rent müzikalinin oluşumu sırasında yaşadığı durumları anlatan müzikal film. Andrew Garfield'ın oyunculuğuna 1 şey diyemem. Fakat Lin-Manuel Miranda'nın yönetmenliği. O iğrenç kurgu. Saçma sapan Sunday şarkısı. Jonathan Larsson bu filmi izleseydi, suratına tokat atardı. Çok yorucu. Ağıtsal müzikal. Filmin sonunda, show must go on. Dayan, yüreğim dayan. Corny at times and I really dislike the lead actor, but I liked the supporting cast and the songs in the second half were pretty good. The theme felt overplayed, maybe I just feel like there are too many films about troubled young artists.

First third was a bohemian bore. The grievances of an adult child. Had it not been an Oscar nom film, I might’ve quit watching. Eventually it takes a turn into something more human and relatable. The songs are a bit indistinguishable - marked by a similar style and flavor. Garfield knows how to act but the singing performances didn’t blow me away no matter how hard they were bellowed.

The deification of Larson can wear a little thin but it’s clear his work was an influence on Miranda, who’s passion for the subject matter is impressively palpable for a directorial debut. Garfield is simply outstanding. His voice is angelic yet powerful and he’s on the verge of tears in practically every scene—honestly, it’s the hottest performance of the year. Lovely, with fine music to boot.

tick, tick...BOOM! is pseudo-biopic immersed in the world of adult theatre kids. While I'm not a fan of the self-involved, hard-to-like characters; Garfield's stellar performance kept me hooked. Most of the songs aren't memorable catchy hits, some don't even work, but there's something reassuring about the upbeat tempo & frantic energy. The almost continuous singing slows the pace, but the choreography, zaniness & facial expressions in the Garfield-Ship-Hudgens scene (& others) make it worth it.

On one note, it' just another way of Hollywood adaptating a musical while forging a cinebio -- and both things kinda clash in essential parts, specially in the second half. Songs are great, love the early 90s NY vibe, the sense of failure and fear of corporate world, most of the musical numbers work -- although LMM doesn't let anything breath on screen, the quick cutting and the generic editing is such a bummer -- and Garfield does everything he can to move the story forward.

Certainly has things in it to like, but it never won me over completely. I’m not a massive Garfield fan, but he’s super here and really does all of the films heavy lifting. LMM’s direction is a little hit-and-miss, with some moments of theatrical class and other moments of theatrical limitations feeling quite un-cinematic. I didn't like all of the casting, some of the musical numbers didn’t work at all for me and the emotional punch never really comes; but it’s admirable in many other respects.

I wasn't bored even for a second... and the quality of the lyrics really got me watching a well known striving artist storyline! It is very well structured I must say. Nothing new but I bought it. I am confused about what got my interest though. Is it the movie or the actual composer/playwright?

Sprightly and enjoyable musical almost feels like Miranda’s ALL THAT JAZZ – you can feel Miranda’s identification with Larson and his world and, while its an obviously idealised and romantic, it feels genuine and authentic view. Sentimental and perhaps too “cutesy” at times, the film is redeemed by its cast, headed by Garfield who captures Larson’s charm and ability to infuriate, and manages the musical numbers reasonably well; nice little cameos here and there are also fun to spot.

On one hand, it's hard for me not to relate to a film that's in-part about a twenty-something trying to make a name for himself as the sands of time trickle down grain-by-grain. On the other hand, this felt a little too smug, a little too cute, and a little too eager-to-impress for me to totally click with. I can definitely see why tick, tick...BOOM! has really struck a chord with some folks, but it left me pretty cold.

W4E2P1S2V1M2A2R4. Amazing, and one of those where I'm (probably too generously) willing to overlook most of the flaws on the ground that it was really released in 1990, so anything that feels trite or overdone is just because other stuff copied it in the interim. But, can't fathom why they cast Hudgens instead of just letting Alexandra Shipp do all the female parts. And the "big song" suffers, like Rent (with "Your Eyes") from a little too much build up for what is just an OK song. Still great!

I have a decent tolerance for musicals but jesus this one really tested my patience in the worst way. I’m starting to think this guy is having some sort of existential crisis!!!!! Still, Garfield did a good job at playing the ultimate irritating theater kid, and LMM killed it with the direction, especially considering it was his film debut (but oh man me and LMM do NOT care about the same things).

Garfield shows once again how a great of an actor he is in this wonderfully charasmatic and energetic performance in this likewise energetic and charismatic movie.Despite knowing very little about Jon Larson I was still engaged in the story and glewed to the screen for the majority of the awesome musical performances. As for flaws, it can feel a bit familiar in its story beats a lot of the time and while it's not boring, it does feel very slow especially in the first hour.

Garfield was extremely impressive in this film; in the end, when they show clips of Larson I was surprised to see how accurate Garfield's body language was. Other than this the movie kinda dragged on at some points and I feel like I've watched this "male artist in new york struggle" trope so many times and this movie didn't bring anything new about it to the table. Garfield really carried this movie, his performance was amazing.

A co-worker recommended this one to me. I knew nothing about it and didn't even read the synopsis before hand, so had no idea what I was about to watch. I immediately got the RENT vibe, and it turned out to be a biography in musical form of the writer of RENT. The movie was very slow. No razzle dazzle. I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had listened to the soundtrack a couple times first, but oh well. I also wish they had a bit on the development of RENT and the related sad story.
