Holocaust documentaries tend to be very detached, holding back judgement and emotion and letting the horrors of the situation speak for themselves. Night and Fog is somewhat unique in that the narrator's outrage is apparent.

Harrowing and poetic variation on the "never forget" mantra. As I have other shit to do, I haven't seen all the audio/visual material on the holocaust, but I don't think it's too much of a stretch to declare this the top of the heap. It also contains a wealth of talent behind the camera, with Resnais, Vierny and Marker all going on to influence cinema for the better.

A half-hour introduction to the Holocaust, comprised of graphic images, a dramatic voiceover narration, and a tasteless musical track. "Night and Fog" did a noteworthy job exposing Nazi crimes to 1950s audiences (discounting inaccuracies such as "corpses into soap" claim), but I don't care for its attempts at lyricism. If you have nine hours, watch "Shoah" by Lanzmann. It doesn't feature archival footage, but Lanzmann got that there was nothing poetic about what he was filming.

While most horror films get a little less scary every time you see them, the Holocaust seems to work the other way around. I may feel numbed about the whole thing when I happen to think about it in my everyday life, but every time I see the footage or even just hear the stories, the disgust builds up inside me again. No matter how infamous these events may be, seeing them on film and in pictures never gets any less gut-wrenching.

Hard to judge objectively, it plays essentially like the most horrible home movie imaginable - but one everyone should see. Jean Cayrol's poetic first-hand account narrative plays over images of abandoned concentration camps, 10 years after liberation, combined with disturbing stock footage of tortured, malnourished and dead or dying prisoners. While today's audience may be more privy to graphic images that display the horrors of Nazi camps, it takes nothing from the shock of this timeless film.

Time has largely desensitized us to the sheer atrocity of the Holocaust, yet Night and Fog remains a nauseating reminder, a demand for acknowledgment. It is an undeniably important work. Resnais often explored the idea that memory informs identity, and here presents that abstract thesis in literal application. Spaces, as much as people, are haunted by events that occur within their boundaries, and the places documented here have sculpted public consciousness.

With Night and Fog, Resnais does the impossible by tackling an immensely ugly and terrifying subject matter with poetry and intelligence. He does a better job relating the horrors of the Holocaust in thirty minutes than all three hours of Schindler's List combined. My only complaint is the music which is cheesy to the point of almost ruining the mood.

No doubt a brave effort by Resnais. The concentration camp footage is, and will always be, frightening to the core, revealing the disturbing depths of man's capacity for hatred and cruelty. The shocking footage of dead emaciated bodies being collected and dumped by tractors like landfill is impossible to erase once seen, while the post war shots of the camps are unsettling because no matter how 'objective' Resnais' eye is, the horrors of the past live eternally in the memory of the present.

Alain Resnais and Jean Cayrol tell the story of the concentration camps in brisk, unflinching strokes: their construction and implementation, and their strange social strata (with the role of the thuggish kapos being the biggest revelation to me). B &Wphotos and vintage footage are mixed with later color footage of the abandoned camps, to great effect; superbly written and delivered narration. The music is a bit heavy and a little more depth would be nice, but it packs a great punch nonetheless.

Harrowing with some very disturbing archival footage, this does a very good job of drilling home the scale of the Holocaust. The scenes with the objects, etc (combs, glasses, hair, etc) are especially effective at tt his. Shocking to see, even when you know all of this happened. Seeing is always different than hearing or reading. Straightforward and short, but packs so much into its run-time.

I have had a tendency to disassociate the Alain Resnais who made "Night and Fog" from the Alain Resnais who made "Hiroshima Mon Amour" and "Last Year at Marienbad", mostly because the experimental modernism of the latter films feel so distinct from the work of a documentarian. On this latest viewing, the thematic connections between these films just hit me like a ton of bricks, especially the preoccupation with memory and how tenuous our connection to the past is.

Very haunting footage of the Holocaust which gives you a good idea of the horrific events that happened. My only major gripe with it that drags it down somewhat is the music score felt inappropriate for the subject and a bit too overbearing in places. For only being 30 minutes long though it gets to the point and serves its purpose.

Its directness and impact are undeniable, despite being somewhat deminished by the subsequent fetishization of WWII evil. (When I went to Auschwitz earlier this year, there were tourists taking cheerful selfies using the barbed wire as a backdrop. It probably speaks both to the film's necessity and the triteness of its message; the monuments of Nazi atrocity are now so worn out that they have turned into something like a slightly sadder Eiffel Tower.)

Can you imagine this back in 1955? I think that back then it would be more shocking but that doesn't mean it can't make an impact even today, that's how good it is. The narration is pitch perfect in describing it, even though he says he basically can't describe it. That, along with the images of both past and -- at the time -- present, this is a really great documentary and should be necessary viewing in History courses.

Resnais deals very consciously in the abstract: although ostensibly about the holocaust, this is a film that applies just as potently to genocide in general and--perhaps most importantly to Resnais--the actions of colonial powers, particularly France's brutal treatment of the Algerian independence movement. Every bit as powerful and meaningful as the incredibly important subject matter deserves: a stunning examination of the human condition and of man's terrifying barbarity to man.

A film that could've made more of an impression were it longer, Alain Resnais' vivid Holocaust documentary still stands as one of the first of its kind, and surprisingly forgotten among Americans, where Holocaust films have become a sub-genre all their own. The pastel colors of the Aushwitz grounds combined with the grainy black and white footage of the death camps make for what may be the ultimate unsettling experiance.

There are some movies out there that show the Holocaust through the filter of a drama, such as The Pianist and Schindler's List. These are good movies, but they fail to take into account one fact: these atrocities need no dramatization. Just show me plainly what happened and it will be enough to shake me to my core. And that's what Night and Fog did to me. An absolutely gut wrenching experience that was more powerful than any Hollywood film on the subject could ever hope to be.

The contrast between archival footage and the peaceful environs of post-war Auschwits is stunning, and Resnais structures his film beautifully, building to a climax that surprises with its power.

Years ago I saw the shot of the bulldozers pushing the pile of bodies. It's haunting. It stayed with me. It's important not to recoil these images, no matter how horrifying. It is our duty to witness, if we can do nothing else for them. Anyways, enough of that. Can I critique the film for one moment? The architecture, and the "making of a death-camp;" that's nothing. Get to the horrors. God knows there's plenty of them, and that's the story worth telling.

Ignore my numerical rating, because this isn't a film to be rated as such. This is the most disturbing film I've ever seen, mainly because of the failure of the "it's only a movie" quote. Resnais doesn't sugar-coat any of the confronting doco footage. If you think you can handle it, it is a film to be seen; even once is enough.

The director's straightforward and honest commentary contributes a lot to this film. This is an exceptional documentary, and definitely not a film for the weak stomachs: some of the imagery is gut wrenching, sad and very powerful. You can say: "I've seen this a million times before..." but that doesn't apply in this case. A film that's not easy to watch but that everyone should.

The beginning and end seem to have respectively wanted to set up and close off an original overarching contrast as their narrative, but unfortunately the middle gets somewhat lost in meandering (though still very powerful) images that do not adhere to that framework.

This achieves what Schindler's list wished it could. The enormity of the Holocaust and its implications can't be fully described in mere re-enactments but only in its grotesque reality. There's no dramatic set pieces here and no major cinematographic tricks but quiet narration and scenes. Powerful stuff.
