Pretty good-looking, nostalgic and filled with a pleasing start, and then Moore follows the path of classic Disney narratives -- the hero's journey, even though this is about a bad guy -- instead of embracing what could've been a mesmerizing feature about the world of videogames. Pixar would've made this into an existential essay film on villanism -- and I'm sure it would be damn great.

Infectiously fun, clever, and hilarious, with great characters and a lot of heart. Does for video games what "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" did for old cartoons, only - dare I say - better.

(2014-15 Disneython #46:) Mixes well-drawn character arcs and settings wonderfully fresh and creative yet somehow simultaneously nostalgic and comforting for a cinematic potion that feels like it was brewed just for me. Certainly one of the best of 2012 along with Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty, and probably the best non-Pixar Disney animation since 1994's The Lion King. Would make a great miniature film festival paired with Scott Pilgrim and Community's 8-bit episode.

I got swept right up into this pastiche of three decades of video game references, because the references weren't the End All. They served the story of surprisingly well-defined and sympathetic characters. What I liked about it was it had its highs, but it also had its lows: this gets dark. But these punctuations smartly serve the redemptive arc well; and it has some of the slyest foreshadowing in recent memory. (!: https://youtu.be/8yt7-qwFUAo?t=1562)

The animation is gorgeous and the characters are all very lovable. Yeah, the story is kind of predictable, but this is the best kid's movie I've seen in awhile. I don't play videogames anywhere near as much as I used to but this tapped into some nice nostalgia.

Fun animated movie catering to parents old enough to remember video game arcades with standing machines. If done poorly, it might have come off as a half-hearted attempt to have adults drag their kids to a movie, but Disney does it with class. "Wreck-It Ralph" was a blast of a movie that I'd wholeheartedly shell out money to see a sequel of in the theaters.

Wreck it Ralph is a movie about video games that knows what it's talking about and doesn't once have that feeling of "Hey look we are hip with the kids!" that many other mainstream stuff about video games (besides most video games) do, with a good story that's well told and a likeable bunch of characters great themes and pacing quite a few emotional moments Wreck it Ralph Is a movie that gamers and non gamers can enjoy.

Hard to believe Pixar wasn't involved in this, with the oddball adventure formula, the [blank]s that have feelings and consciousness when people aren't watching, and the shockingly high quality. It's hilarious, engaging, likable, and emotional. Probably Disney's best work since the first half of the 1990's.

It's such a cool and unique concept, helped along by a big nostalgic push from seeing some classic video game characters (good bad or indifferent) licensed in new ways. The voice acting is pretty good as far as I'm concerned (Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman are particularly fantastic). It's a fairly smart script (the line "What's going on in this candy-coated Heart of Darkness?" is brilliant) and a nice, engaging story that's not too taxing. It's charming and enjoyable, if not spectacular.

Disney finally meets (exceeds?) the Pixar benchmark with a computer-animated film of their own. It's easy to write the film off as "Toy Story with video games", but it's so much more than that. The in-jokes for the gamer crowd all hit the mark (the MGS exclamation mark gag slayed me), but the film doesn't get bogged down in references either. It creates a world of its own, and peppers it with characters I would love to spend more time with. I had a big dumb smile on my face from start to finish.

Brilliantly designed and a visual treat throughout. Some shoddy voice work can distract at times. Isn't exactly the most original story either (basically just a version of Toy Story with different characters), but it works and works well. Good kids movie

Wreck-It Ralph is a CG pedophile who lures kids of the 80s into his rusted red nostalgia van with tasty bits of their sugar-frosted 8-bit childhood. Then, once inside, he forces them to spend the next 60 minutes playing Candy Crush with Sarah Silverman, and has them wishing Q-Bert will come to save the day.

Smartly-done execution of the basic Disney formula as applied to a collision of genres! Fun, colorful, self-aware without being smug, and gets bonus points for being a "bad guy protagonist" story where the corresponding "good guy" really is a good guy.

Great premise and starts out well, but then the story gets a bit too Disney and underwhelming; it's enjoyable enough just from the nostalgia-/references-factor, but lacks emotions or surprises to take it up a level. Voice-vice JC.Reilly is great, but the two main females (S.Silverman and J.Lynch) are often off-putting and distracting. *Preview*: #13#, exp-4*, popcorn, hype, story, reviews, R3.

Wreck-It Ralph works because its narrative functions around its premise rather than being an excuse to spew references. It has the latter in spades and sometimes they don't make sense, but a lot of gamey stuff is used for plot beats in ways that were amusing such as glitching and the concept of villainy. The movie's juxtaposition with eras and genres is also amusing, even if the movie barely explores this. The catharsis and drama between the leads is solid enough, and leads to a solid ending.

A children's film with a very unique concept, yet a very cliche plot execution. By the final third of the movie I pretty much forgot it was supposed to pay homage to video games which I was pretty disappointed about. Don't get me wrong it's still enjoyable and funny but I wish it was more special. Maybe I had too high expectations as a nostalgic gamer.

Hidden behind all the video game references there's actually an engaging and fun story. When so many other animation studios seem to think you can float a movie on pop culture references alone, Disney shows that it's possible to simultaneously make the most reference-heavy movie ever and still make the plot work without them.

An absolute blast in a lot of ways. I was happy it wasn't some big videogame reference fanwank, but focus on the candy game wasn't a lot better. Voices were excellent and had a lot of gorgeous set-pieces, but the movie falls into the trap of thinking if you give an unoriginal story to original characters it'll give it more life. Not really, guys. But I have to give it some credit I did NOT see that twist coming.

Great premise and excellent voice acting. I loved all the references to many of my favourite games. I was a little disappointed that so much of the story took place within only one very boring "candyland" game; they really could have packed in a lot more video game content if not for that very long and dull middle section. But it's still definitely a film worth watching.

Spent too little time on the core plot and characters and too much time on the GOTTA GET A MEDAL adventure leaving a solid adventure movie with characters we don't really care about. A lot of good references, and avoided the pitfalls of making the reference the joke itself or even worse a core plot element.

Dreams of reinventing Toy Story but has a child's understanding of what makes Toy Story tick. The story is incredibly pedestrian and relies on terrible puns for laughs. The most interesting thing about the movie was its tacit approval of the class system: brainless proles starting to fantasize about social mobility will only end up badly.

The spiritual successor to the original Toy Story, Wreck-It Ralph starts with a very simple, but fun premise, and spins from it a fun, touching story that will weasel it's way into your heart whether you're a gamer or not. Filled with fun characters, a few clever references, and a load of heart, it feels more like a Pixar movie than Pixar's last two outings, and is easily the best animated film of the year. What I loved most about this film is the world it creates and the door it leaves open for bigger and better sequels, with more video game character cameos to come, much like Toy Story did with toys. If you're a gamer, there's no way in hell that you can not like this movie. And if you're a life long gamer, like me, then the nostalgia piled on with game references = easily one of the best films of the year. Homeless Q*bert panhandling in the subway....just awesome!

Surprisingly enjoyable for a Disney movie! Of course it's slightly shallow at parts, however it scored high with me due to my love for olde video games and villains. I could've done without the cheesy romantic side-story though. Also, it is full of cute little details that will make you painfully aware of your age, once you realise how old some of the featured video game characters are.

An entertaining family film. Don't let the videogame character heavy advertising put you off if you're not into gaming. Think of it more as "Toy Story in computers", where the characters on screen have personalities in their own world. Game fans will enjoy references, but the film doesn't alienate it's audience and is quite accessible. I did feel like we spend too much time in the candy land though... I almost forgot it was a film about games and not about sweets!

There were a couple little moments that were long winded or preachy and the voice acting varied in terms of quality even within the individual performances, but I loved watching it. Possibly one of the best third acts I've ever seen in an animated film, Wreck-It Ralph slides so many important plot points into its sleeves when you're distracted and then pulls them all out at once: "Ta-da!" It's really a fantastic trick pulled off perfectly. What a joy, I didn't expect this to be so genuinely touching and heartwrenching, and above all, so funny. Good work Disney, damn. This film probably wouldn't be that good if you don't like video games. If you do, it really is just so awesome. Its funny, the action is awesome, the acting and animation is superb and the references are just perfect. The only qualm I had that is that too much of it was set in Sugar Rush world for me, i would have liked to see more worlds and more kind of games. Such a basic moral themed children's movie. None of the characters were really that lovable and it could barely retain my attention. Plus it gets the automatic -20 points for the horrendous product placement, (Subway, mentos, coke, nesquik) and since it was a movie for children it gets an extra 5 taken off for trying to brainwash our kids at such a young age. There were some good parts but in the end the 8-bit nostalgia wasn't enough for me. Also, fuck Sarah Silverman and her annoying voice.

There were excellent references to many classics like Street Fighter, Mario and others. I felt like running out and finding a classic arcade game to tackle like Rampage or something. Funny, heartfelt and great to look at. The 3D was not at all obtrusive and the voice acting is terrific. It's sometimes awkward with how it shoehorns the possible notion that "you can't fight who you are so you might as well not try!" Granted it rebuffs this by the end but at times it doesn't work or seems like it's sending the wrong message. That and any other problems are minor as the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

As an ex-grubby kid, I adored Silverman's grubby kid character. I liked it when there was no obvious villain. If they would have de-emphasised the Candy King plot and pushed the bug plot a little higher in the mix, I would have been happier. Not that kids would notice, or care, that the movie sacrificed momentum for the sake of Disney convention. (I don't have kids, and don't watch family movies. It looks exceptional, but from the first minute in, Wreck-It Ralph sadly has the same conventional premise for children's films of 'being yourself', without a lot of depth and a confused moral to the tale. Despite its inspired premise, and the desire to play Mario Kart rip-offs after leaving the cinema, it fails to live up to an inspired ode to classic arcade games the non-gamers like myself could have fallen in love with.

Wreck it Ralph was amusing but Vanellope really grates on the nerves after awhile. The animation is good but that's to be expected for the amount of money and technical talent they poured into this. Thought this was Pixar until someone corrected me. That's how good it is. The videogame references are heavy-handed at the start, but once it gets going they become more subtle. Yeah they're pop culture references (games are pop culture these days, right?) but they're done much better than Dreamworks' cynical namedropping. The story isn't hugely original, but it doesn't need to be when it's set in a world of such charm and imagination. It's topped off by great voice work (especially Silverman).

Surprisingly clever and entertaining, border-line ingenious conceptually.
