The Godfather (1972)

Francis Ford Coppola's epic features Marlon Brando in his Oscar-winning role as the patriarch of the Corleone family. Director Coppola paints a chilling portrait of the Sicilian clan's rise and near fall from power in America, masterfully balancing the story between the Corleone's family life and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged... The film's powerhouse narrative remains gripping throughout, the directing is restrained and elegant, and the acting is incredible; obviously Brando is iconic as the Don, but Pacino delivers one of his greatest and most nuanced performances, and Keaton, Caan, and Duvall are fantastic in supporting roles. A classic film through and through.

It has almost become cliche to say this movie is perfect, but it is, and I'm saying it again. It's really hard to argue against someone when they say that this is the best film of all time. It's so good. The writing, acting, directing, everything is amazing. I believe in America.

Alex Watkins | 6 98th |
A flawless character study, supported by an airtight script, virtuoso direction, picture-perfect cinematography and perhaps the best collective acting job in the history of cinema; an exemplar of everything that makes film great in its purest form. The emotional pull of the movie is every bit as strong as it was nearly 40 years ago, because every aspect of it is timeless; Al Pacino's subtle, shifting transformation from civilian to mafia don will never lose its power.

Coppola created an atmosphere like none other in this film. It is very dark, and yet very classy and sophisticated. It is powerful in its presentation and has some of the greatest performances in film. Everything seemed so real. The Godfather created a number of memorable characters portrayed by some of the greatest American actors of our time, including the great Marlon Brando who turns in a well deserved oscar winning performance. The Godfather is nothing short of a masterpiece.

Possibly the greatest crime film in cinema history. Marlon Brando and the cast are spectacular. The Godfather is one of the most influential if not THE most influential film of the 20th century.

Brando's performance as the mighty and god-like Vito Corleone is legendary and the peak highlight of acting during 20th century cinema. He elevates this film from great to historic. No doubt a classic in every sense "The Godfather", inspired by Mario Puzo's epic novel, is hard to fault in any way. Coppola's flawless vision created something far beyond its own scope; and with chilling performances from Pacino, Duvall and Caan, the film is simply a masterpiece. No review will ever do it justice.

Some of the best acting captured on film, One of the most iconic stories ever written, and featuring a look on the criminal underworld that had never been seen before, "The Godfather" is quite honestly the perfect movie.

It lives up to the hype. Is it a classic? In a word: Yes. There's a reason why everyone loves this movie, and why it resonates so strongly with everyone who views it.

Engrossing motion picture that features some of the finest editing, cinematography and performances ever. There is a wonderful theme of family that runs through this film and its later sequels. No one is truly judged. Love is unconditional. God is the one who truly judges. Easily, the word masterpiece describes this film, but that's been said by so many...Who am I to argue? Masterpiece is right on the money.

Terrific movie, beautifully filmed, driven by excellent performances and a strong narrative. There are some glorious set piece scenes dotted throughout the film. If I had a minor gripe, it is that the film seems to focus on a slighty romanticised version of the Mafia (this is present in Puzo's writing), which doesn't sit comfortably in comparison to grittier realisations on film/TV. Nonetheless, the film succeeds on pretty much every level, and is recommended viewing for all humans.

Nathan S | 6 99th |
An appropriately legendary film, its enduring influence constantly evident not only in subsequent cinema, but all areas of pop culture. It transcends the milieu of gangster film, becoming a melodrama of familial loyalty and an epic parable of the capitalist American Dream. The plotting is dense, thick with characters of nuanced motivation, all played to pitch perfection. Its golden glow, the looming score, and the authenticity of its ethnic indulgences make it an elegant and visionary picture.

Excruciatingly boring. Marlon Brando is good as the head of the family, but he is the only reason you should see this film. Most troublesome is the movie's blatant glorification of the gangster way of life. For sad white men raised by women, the kind who'd later go on and learn Pulp Fiction by heart.

Although the Godfather is crafted to virtual perfection, and is instantly lovable, I do not give it a perfect score: It lacks a certain depth, a certain revelatory wisdom, that separates the films that are genius from ones that are merely great in every way.

As close to perfect as I've ever seen a movie get, The Godfather stands above all as my personal favorite and my choice for the best overall. There has never been a movie with such pitch-perfect tone and mood guiding the elegant imagery, acting, writing, and every other technical aspect so artistically. It was a revelation of new era in film making; an incredible experience that should not be missed.

I don't think The Godfather is the best movie ever, but I can definitely see why someone would think so. The movie has no flaws worth speaking of; the acting, directing and writing are uniformly excellent; and for a nearly three hours long movie, it does a surprisingly good job of keeping things moving at all times.

This is so classic that it's almost pointless to say anything about it. Everything in this movie is masterfully crafted, all the way to the closing shot. Michael Corleone's rise to power is also one of the most gripping character turns ever.

- Brando complete with shot in throat voice.
- Al Pacino pre-yelling, going evil.
- John Cazale, James Caan, Robert Duvall.
- Horse's head.
- Train sound = Pacino kills.
- Baptism...or executions?
- Orange = Death???
- The ending. "No."
Verdict: Offer not refusable.

This has everything that makes a movie "great." It has iconic characters, memorable scenes, top notch acting, an accessible yet involved story, beautiful cinematography, and it's all topped off with perhaps the best musical score ever written. Add a small dose of gritty violence, and it becomes clear to me why this is one of my favorite movies. It just doesn't get old, no matter how many times I watch.

This movie presents a beautiful paradox that all good cinema is based on; it's so rich in character development, and its veins flow of intimacy and mesmorising attention to detail, but at the same time it remains in a zone of perfect emotional detachment. It's almost sublime in the morally ambiguous world that it creates and the all pervading influence of the mafia both within and upon society at large.

The transitional piano sequence after the restaurant assassination, as the headlines read violence - It depicts the mafia members partaking in the menial gestures of life; taking off your shoes for bed, passing the pasta, writing a letter, praying, sharing a laugh. Yet as the music plays, (FFC's father) it is accompanied by a deep, sinister undertone. That is the mafia - a lifestyle masquerading normalcy, while discretely keeping hours of brutality, and underhanded menace. Champion filmmaking.

A great movie that stands the test of time. Though a few moments feel dated, the power of the storytelling remains. From the opening line: "I believe in America" to the donning of the new Godfather, Coppola and Puzo tell a gripping and measured story of power: its dominion, its perils, and its passage from father to son.

The only part of this film (literally the only part) that was shoddy was the beating of Carlo in the streets by Santino. That's about it, and everything else was darn near flawless. Some of it seems cliche (I'll make him an offer he can't refuse, sleep with the fishes, etc.), but that's only because it's been parodied and referenced countless times by now. Deserving of every bit of praise it has received over the years. Even if you don't like mafia movies, you'll probably enjoy this anyway.

Mostly gripping but very flawed and overblown. Francis Ford Coppola flat out refuses to trim the fat around the good bits and as a result for every minute that advances the plot we get twelve that are mind-numbingly boring and of no consequence. The worst offender is the insultingly pointless Sicily sequence. The movie captures the feel and look of the period fantastically but there just isn't enough substance for it to be called great, especially considering its length.

It is hard to criticise this film as it IS a superb bit of cinema. The acting of Pacino & Brando, and many of the supporting cast is simply breathtaking (although Talia Shire is abyssmal as Connie) but there are many inconsistencies: Pacino's bruise took years to heal, but Connies husband was miraculously healed from a real kicking in days! whilst I love "slow build" and careful pacing in films, this was (perfectly) slow to begin, but then rushed, time contracted and crammed towards the climax

My attention did wane from time to time, but the powerhouse performances (Brando & Pacino did not disappoint) and beautiful cinematography carried me through. Not my favorite film of all time, but after seeing it multiple times, I can understand the wide appeal: compelling narrative, engaging music, beautiful images, and a definite staying power--it holds up over time. Most interesting to me is Coppola/Puzo's repeated use of rituals (weddings, funerals, baptism) in the film to underscore the significant role that tradition plays in the family. Those who honor tradition and uphold it grow in power and influence, while those who don't, well . . . die.

This may be because I generally don't like mobster movies, but I found this insanely boring. Tried watching it three times and everytime I fell asleep after 10-15minutes, which rarely happens. So after a few too many cups of coffee I decided to give it another try and it almost bored me to tears. It's just not interesting in any way. Those are my excuses and I'm sticking to them... please don't lynch me....

Godfather is painfully memorable: from the main music theme to the story and scenes. It draws its strength from building and stressing the inner tensions before the culminations repeatedly (believed to be a blasphemy in nowadays cinema), leaving no loose ends and maintaining pure quality in acting, shooting, story - i.e. everything. What it lacks is emotional attachment due to being so meticulously complete. Is this a contradiction to the above? No. It is an offer so good you can't refuse.

Arguably the best movie ever made. I woudn't disagree. It's obscenely re watchable. It works on every level and then some more. It can be viewed as an examination on family, fate, honour or the history of America, and it has something deep to say on every one of those issues. It's a feast to the eyes, and by now even if its not your favourite movie, everyone will agree this is one that will remain in the history of the great accomplishments in the arts. One beatiful, entertaining masterpiece.

Deserves all of the plaudits it gets. A masterful examination of what makes a family, and the cost that is sometimes paid for unflinching loyalty. Brando gets all the credit in some reviews, and he is brilliant, but for me it is Pacino who really makes this film. The way his character progresses and develops over the course of nearly three hours is quite brilliant. That, along with the supporting cast, the cinematography and the music make The Godfather a masterpiece.

A perfect movie in every way. It's so perfect people try to find flaws somewhere in it. What are you going to say? That its perfect lighting rubbed you the wrong way? That everyone in the cast pulled their weight? That a 3 hour movie is actually one of the most entertaining movies rendering running time values meaningless? You're not going to find a flaw, and the harder you look the more you're going to accidentally watch it all the way through.

The Godfather is perhaps the greatest movie ever made and rightfully deserves to be. Every performance in the movie is amazing, mainly Brando, Duvall and Pacino. The music is so iconic, the directing is masterful and the story adapted so perfectly! You don't need to be a fan of 'crime' movies to love this one!

The Godfather is one of the most important and influential pieces of filmmaking history. Francis Ford Coppola till this day sets the standard for crime dramas. The directing, story telling, characters, score, dialogue, screenplay and performances are all perfect. Marlon Brando gives one of the most iconic performances of all time and Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall are all superb also. The Godfather is a timeless classic and if this isn't filmmaking perfection then I don't know what is.

a very humanistic portrayal of the mafia, showing their family life equal with their criminal activity. it features a fine storyline of a son gradually becoming more and more like his father as he becomes head of the family business, with a particularly good performance by brando. all of this with good music, good photography. however, i don't think it's unique or perfect enough to be labelled a masterpiece. none of the elements stand out as truly special.

Coppola transformed Puzo's somewhat trashy novel into a masterful allegory for American capitalism, delving deeper into the shadowy world of the Italian mafia than any film released on the subject before or since. Gordon Willis' photography is legendary for a reason; his warm, rich sepia tones are capable of evoking both nostalgia and dread, perfectly capturing the period like slightly faded photographs. Brando is mercurial while Rota's score is haunting.

Francis Ford Coppola's masterful direction combined with Mario Puzo's riveting story, Nino Rota and Carmine Coppola's stirring and memorable score, Gordon Willis's breathtaking cinematography, the universally spectacular performances, what more needs to be said, people?! Even with a running time that's just shy of three hours, the story, narrative and richly written characters have you so captivated, you don't even feel the length of time go by. Review source: silv

I mean, this is the essential American narrative, right? Is there any reason to go into detail about why "The Godfather" is perfect?

After having been told all your life how great The Godfather is, it's unlikely that you'll come away from your first viewing of it thinking, "Why, yes, that IS the greatest movie of all time!" It suffers from Citizen Kane Syndrome, in that it can't possibly live up to the expectations created by being placed atop so many lists for so many years.

I tried to like this. I really did. It's very "meh" overall with me. Am I missing some key thing? Am I missing someone in my life that's obsessed with it to tell me it's amazing? I dunno. It felt 3x longer than it needed to be, there's no real tension...but it's not BAD. Maybe I'll try again some other time, but as of right now: meh.

While there are very obviously elements of this movie that are very well made, I don't really see why this is viewed as a masterpiece. Perhaps with the sequel I'll get a better context for that, but I didn't think there was anything particularly impressive about the story itself.
