Probably the most tonally accurate portrayal of the character in film since the 1978 movie, and the look and cinematography feels a LOT like the Superman comics I love. Yeah, it’s pretty dang good. Thankfully feels like a Superman movie first and a James Gunn movie second, whilst retaining some of his signature humor and, best of all, the heart and soul that makes his movies as good as they are. Pitch perfect casting all around. Emotional and throughly entertaining. I can’t wait for more.

Hey! This Superman smiles! I didn't know that was allowed. Gunn's Superman turns the comic book up to 11 and the emphasis on valuing life, justice, kindness, hope, and helping others above all other considerations has returned in full force. The film posits, successfully IMO, that those sentiments have become subversive and so seeing that portrayed with frankly overbearing abandon was nice. Seeing a superhero movie about a guy who tries his hardest to be good was nice.

i had absolutely no expectations when i went to the movies. James Gunn may be a good director but this Superman movie didn't move me at all, Zack Snyder's Superman (Man of Steel) had moved me a lot more and the portrayal was much better with Zack Snyder ... James Gunn's Superman movie was too caotic for me, too many characters at once. i could go on writing and writing now but before this becomes a novel i'll end it with a short conclusion. Gunn simply knows comic books and how to make movies about them. He creates likeable characters and dynamic villains and casts them well. He also understands how music can work with movies better than almost all other directors. This isn't world changing cinema, but it IS world building cinema. I am immediately interested in Guy, Hawkgirl, Terrific , Supergirl etc. Great fun popcorn flick.

I’m almost totally over the whole superhero thing (this is only the second post-Endgame one I’ve seen in theaters, though I did gradually catch most of the MCUs on Disney Plus / DCEUs on HBO), but my curiosity was piqued. And I’d say I mostly enjoyed it; it was colorful and giddily dorky and had mostly likable takes on the characters. Must be the least we’ve ever seen Superman “in character” as Clark Kent in any version (>5 minutes in the whole movie I think). Fun summer popcorn action tho.

I big disappointment. The film was very silly throughout with shit jokes which did kinda ruin it for me. Compared to man of steel which was serious and gripping throughout. Acting was good by the main characters and the story was there. Music was good but have been a bigger emphasis if used right. The silliness and lack of seriousness. The goofy comedy charchter and the unfunny dog. Just ruined it completely

Suffers a little from Netflix writing and having the characters often flatly declare "this is who I am" and "this is what I am doing and why" so that someone on their phone can keep pace. When Supe said something to the effect of 'maybe sincerity is the real punk rock' I groaned out loud in the theater. But it is very funny, I didn't doubt Corenswet as Superman for a second, and there is a lot to like.

Structurally and thematically this movie is as simplistic as you can get with superheroes. There are also weird decisions in the world building, particularly around Krypton. Certain narrative elements end up being a pile of nothing. But in a way, I find that refreshing. That it's comfortable treating its audience like it doesn't need to hand feed its world building to you, that it has such reverence for Superman's idealism and this is all elevated by fun performances and cool setpieces.

It was boring and disappointing; 2 hours of senseless action. I don't know why Hollywood thinks that the only thing we are interested in seeing is these larger-than-life fight scenes; personally, I'm very bored with them. Corenswet made a good Superman (Mr Terrifice was fine also), but the rest didn't really work. Basically, they took the theme of Invincible and patched it on Superman with a manic Luthor and a random Slavic-looking nation attacking a random Middle-Eastern-looking country.

A great surprise. Had some continuation over from Man of Steel in terms of Superman being involved in multinational conflicts, slow motion and scale. However, also has a big heart, isn't cynical, as you would expect from Gunn, is grand, refreshing and is a solid groundwork for the new DC universe.

There’s a quality episode of Lois & Clark happening in between this Silver Age Supes pastiche. It just doesn’t go far enough with the goofy to really sell the era as more than a wink and a nod to the faithful. And the layers of irony can make the optimism difficult to discern as sincere. A miss for me, unfortunately.

The best Superman movie ever made. Its central message deeply resonates and is perfect for our time: In a world of endless negativity and sardonic social media meanness, trying to be a genuinely good person is our generation's punk rock. It's telling that Gunn cast the Kent parents as very plain and utterly unglamorous (unlike in the Snyder movies), and that the title character's fondest memories are simple family moments that are seemingly popular to sneer at.

There's something to be said about the movie unabashedly wearing Superman's virtuous core moral tenets proudly on its chest. However, there's also something to be said about an obscure secondary character having the most interesting action sequence in Superman's own film. It's a take on the hero that the world desperately needs, and had it been released a decade ago it might've held a grip on the zeitgeist; but in 2025, it unfortunately doesn't do enough to stand out from superhero fatigue.

Bright, punchy, relevant and well cast. I liked its sunny disposition. I wasn’t keen on some of the various suit/set design or the Lara/Jor-El plot device, but Gunn knows how to cram characters into 2 hours & not make a film feel unbalanced or the characters overly lightweight. The stuff with Clark’s human parents is some of the best representation of those relationships we’ve seen on screen, even if brief. I’m not sure if this carries enough momentum to kickstart the DCU, but it’s very solid.

This has some immaculately done action scenes, all around it has the look of a highly polished movie and it usually keeps the humour to a reasonable level. All strong points for me to rate this highly but the story is just so incredibly lacklustre, it's like the top coat has been done perfectly but the actual wall was constructed with toothpicks. Wildly different from most superhero flicks of the past 2 decades. The tonal beats and character moments presented here are so rare in the genre these days it actually feels incredibly refreshing. Even with its generally campy nature, there are some shockingly dark moments. You'd think these clashes would make for a messy experience, yet Gunn somehow pulls it all off. The allegorical aspects and their modern contexts are not at all shrouded, yet they are woven in surpringly well. Very fun watch.

Very wholesome, very funny, and very dumb. Its clear they've finally worked out how to make the tone of a more lighthearted Superman film work, which I appreciate. Even if the writing doesn't always trust it's audience enough, and the final villain twist copies the laziest trends of past superhero films.

Cons: I think David Corenswet hasn't got the level of charizma for Superman role as much as Reeve or Cavill and the suit is the worst suit in a Superman movie. The runtime isn't enough for a movie with so many side characters and story beats. Pros: Rachel Brosnahan is visually the best match for a Lois Lane role since Margot Kidder, Lex Luthor's portrayal is the most comic accurate one in a Superman movie ever! Overall tone of the movie is unique and direction/writing and pacing is acceptable..

It's committed to a lot of different directions the sum of which actually detract from the potential of each thread. The sweeping camera movements add a literal lack of focus to the action also. There's a lot of near misses, Superman on his knees, Krypto the dog coming to the rescue and Lois flying spaceships and none of it particularly lands.

James Gunn's Superman is a beacon of hope and optimism in a world of egotistical tech CEOs, genocidal foreign regimes, and encroaching anti-immigrant hate. It's a bit hokey, yes, but maybe we need a dose of hokey moral goodness these days.

Beginning half was very cringe. Pocket universe, heavy comic references, baby Joey & the dorky tone of his dad's voice despite his awesome power. The monster that grew large. Bowl cut. Inserting unneeded comic relief. It was just shit. The second half of the film made sense as the story progressed. The post-Smallville type Superman we always wanted. The main two villains were perfectly executed. David did a great job, but I don't know why Tom Welling wasn't the first choice. They could be twins.

Just a good fun movie. I do like Man of Steel a bit more because the story in that one was better overall. It's a little wonky at times in this one. But as far as tone goes I liked this one more. I also liked the acting more here for most of the cast; the only one I would put above anyone here would be Michael Shannon. Nicolas Holt is the best Lex Luthor we have ever gotten though.

As much as I’m historically not a fan of Gunn’s screenplays, I do like a lot of the ideas he’s playing with here (Superman as a somewhat more reckless and indelicate force-of-good, the ramifications of mutant vigilantes in regards to global politics, the absolute suckage of Elon Musk, etc.). Doesn’t really earn its last beat, but I got kinda choked up anyway. I liked this so much, I’m already bracing myself for everyone else proclaiming that it sucks actually.

Look, it's fun. And it's Gunn's personality, minus the silliest parts. He isn't trying to do a Singer or Snyder & copying Donner and Batman Begins. For the most part it tries to adapt the essence of a comic book--fun, light, escapist stuff that gives you someone to root for. I do think some of the jokes are a little too mawkish and hokey (especially involve Krypto). And the best fight scene is probably the last one. But overall it is fine and the type of escape you look for in a summer movie.

Superman feels like Superman again and that definitely can't be understated. Corenswet embodies the frustration of a Superman still trying to figure out who he wants to be. Nicholas Hoult commands attention as Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan is delightful as a the firecracker that is Lois Lane. There are tender moments that absolutely showcase that Superman values his humanity above all else and that was a much better approach to the story.

The first half is hard to get through, boy is it; Gunn as usual has the subtlety of a crayon drawing. But after Snyder's dull drabness or the crass, sophomoric nonsense of that "the boys" crap, it's nice to again see Superman as he's supposed to be. Plus the second half improves so much it almost seems like a different movie, and Corenswet is great all the way.

Wasn't always on-point and I did miss the humor of my Superman from the 1950s TV-series, but this was a attempt to humanize Superman, yet heavily displaying everything that clearly doesn't make him one. It's ok. For me it's inferior to the 1978 one. It gets a lot right about the character. I don't think it tells an interesting story from the Superman mythos. The hero is the avatar of hope and his position as a moral actor in the face of his power to do otherwise is what makes him compelling. I didn't like recycling parts of the score. I'd rather they do their own thing.

Still not as good as Suicide Squad but a competent, fun movie. Feels like a GotG movie without the blatant exposition. In awe by how this is not a mess. 2025's busiest film, with enough storylines -- there's even time for a Daily Planet reporter to get his own arc and a lover! -- to fill an entire trilogy and an 8-part limited series. Everything with Krypto looks cute, of course, and it's nice to see DC trying to take a completely different path after the Snyderverse years, but idk, the whole thing sounds a bit too one-note for me, lacking a proper identity -- it really feels like competently flat TV.

People thought the previous iteration of Superman was bad, because it was to grim, and I always thought it was rather because it was just badly written. Not the deepest or most interesting superhero movie around, but it’s fun. It’s got a ton of action, and it’s far superior visually to most of what DC has been putting out (Try comparing the visuals in The Flash to this, you’ll see the difference immediately). James Gunn's Superman showcases the best & worst of Gunn. The action, colours, soundtrack & dialogue are all reminiscent of his Guardians of the Galaxy work; a bright mix of 70's aesthetic & 90's optimism. Gunn's twist on current affairs is both characteristic & frustratingly weak as it skirts an annoying line between him badly appropriating cultures & him making an unnuanced point. The cast is excellent (though I do miss Cavill) & the cameos might get annoying. A fun but shallow romp.

Superman brought down to Earth (like, literally, from the first moment). It's a James Gunn movie, for all its charm and shortcomings, so you probably know the deal: Where it lacks depth it adds heart. High stakes are replaced with goof and nerdy lore, sometimes overstaying its welcome. At the end of the day David Corenswet is a Superman worth a damn. Saw this in ultra avx+3d+dbox w Dolby Atmos. Final day in this format before going to just the regular screens so we went out to enjoy it. Not a big fan of 3d, but it was the only option and they did a good job with it. Really enjoyed this on the whole. Some aspects are superhero hokey as is expected but for a new take on my fave fella from a young age this was very enjoyable. Great sound, excellent VFX and the pup is the star. 8.1

Exactly the kind of reboot that DC needed. Gunn knows what audiences are looking for in their superheroes, and while he's obviously more comfortable and his skills lend themselves better to more vulgar, inappropriate characters like the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, the true heart and soul of what makes Superman such an icon is well represented here. It's a fun, kind-hearted, relatively funny movie with great action scenes and fun characters. I'm excited for the rest of the DCU!

Enjoyable. Finally a superhero film that actually has meaning and isn't just fighting scenes non stop with thin characters.

That movie is confused. Not confusing, but confused. The worldbuilding is intense and interesting, it finally feels like DC wants to be comic accurate, but we simply didn't spend enough time with Superman in the Superman movie, we barely know the guy by the time it's over.

An excellent Superman film, which gets the character just right and manages to make him interesting. Corenswet does a fantastic job, and I appreciated not seeing too much of Clark. The script is fun and surprising, and Nicholas Hoult is perfection as a sneering, malicious Lex.

Good riddance to the MCU blue and grays. Here we have color grading that is bright, colorful, and appropriately superhero-like-- a movie that embraces all the wonder of a comic book. Sometimes to a fault. Superman is so self-consciously inspirational that when it tries to portray itself as punk radical optimism, I can't help but roll my eyes (time for dozens of mediocre Youtube video essays to pop up about that). Still, I enjoy a superhero movie that doesn't look dull or feel pointlessly gritty.

No idea if this movie deserves such a high rating, I don't care that was beyond awesome in every way.

Hey, sad people who hate this movie - it's ok for movies to be fun. It's ok for movies to be silly. This is a comic book movie. It should be fun and silly, and it is.

Good cast, plenty of heart, bit of a mess of ideas and has the usual Gunn quirks. Goofy deliberately bad super heroes and lame jokes. A needle drop fight scene to a pop song. Mostly works though. Mr terrific was a highlight and lex. Didn't need the river scene.

Although I like Superman as a character, I've never been super fond of the movies. They don't hit super hard. This however was the best live action Superman movie I've ever seen.

This movie exercises a current tried and true superhero trope but i fear it will not have good shelf life. However, i must say, it is a pretty good superhero movie. Makes me feel hopeful, as superman should.

Not perfect, but a genuine woke Superman I can support. Very All Star Superman tone they've taken

Well I like it. Launching in full tilt with a brief screen of text is ballsy, but I liked it. I want more time with this Superman to know how I feel about David Corenswet, but it's not an immediate no. Really liked Nicholas Hoult as Luthor, that tension between intelligence and ferocity is well played.

I could've waited to watch this at home. There's lots of fan service, stakes-killing "comedy" & CGI battles - the usual. A potential problem w/ Superman is that - like Black Panther or Wonder Woman - he's so perfect, character development might not exist. Well, Gunn steers into the skid here. While the good films allowed a romance to develop w/ Lois, that's taken off the table. Instead we get SUPERMAN THE ROLE MODEL: 2 hours of reminding you that "kindness" & trust is what's really cool, kids!

Unlike just about every other actor in Gunn's movie, Corenswet suits (#brilliantverbchoice) his role but story and character development are kept to a minimum in the first-draft-y script in favor of various shenanigans. None of said shenanigans are particularly cool so I sincerely hope that this is because Gunn has reserved all of his best ideas for the second season of 'Peacemaker'.
