Deserves praise not only for it's spot on foreshadowing of the severity of Goldie Hawn's downhill trajectory in the looks department, but it's also a damned fun dark comedy that holds up nearly thirty years later. It's hard for me to judge comedies as classic when I saw them when they came out, but I can without hesitation call this a classic. God, I'm getting old.

You can call it course objectification or merely an appreciation of femininity, but each year as Meryl Streep looks into the camera in acknowledgement of her Academy Award nomination I'm reminded of her chest becoming perkier after she takes the elixer in this. Not so much when she pulls her head back up out of her neck after she gets hit with the shovel, but I guess I think about that too.

You would think a movie that stars Bruce Willis, Meryl Streep, and Goldie Hawn would be so much better. It's really kind of embarrasing. Actually, I'd probably be more inclined to describe it as creepy and disturbing.

Aside from some high quality, yet subtly used visual effects, there's not much going for Death Becomes Her. It's a nag and gag fest with dialog that's not quite clever enough to make it worth seeing more than once. For the most part, the goofy and surprisingly unsettling plot, gets too far out of hand, and the gags become repetitive and weird. Crap!

Quite a bit of fun and amusing in places, 'Death Becomes Her' is not bad at all. I like Bruce Willis' character in particular. Ultimately however this film does nothing outstanding or even new, and does little to linger in the memory.

A reminder that good acting can come in threes (Streep, Willis, Hawn), along with a snappy and comical dialogue with a sobering tale of the folly of vanity running beneath. It's quite witty, the visual effects are used to good effect (and still make quite an impression) and if ever there was a compelling juxtaposition to be drawn between Frankenstein and affluent America here it is, alive, in all it's glory.

What an insanely pleasant surprise! Back in the times when Hollywood still had an ASL longer than 0,00001 ms and back when a hole in the stomach would earn a movie the oscar for best special effects (or whatever). Great flick where it would've been a complete disaster had it not been for then insanely exagerated acting - and script. Gotta admit - I loved it.

Equal parts awful and hilarious. Bruce Willis in particular of the leading three delivers a very amusing, seemingly tongue-in-cheek performance. The two others are fine-ish, more notable for their characters' circumstances than personality. Whether or not you enjoy this will probably depend on your ability to accept and/or have a lot of fun laughing at the ridiculous concept.

The script may meander a little. Overall, it doesn't feel like the film does much with its characters while at the same time asking you to buy into a pretty elaborate premise with zero setup. But its creative charm is through the roof. It's just one of those effects-heavy dark comedy staples of the 90s that everyone had a VHS copy of and they didn't know why.

There's something Twilight Zone-y about the blend of black comedy and Sunday sermon, as well as about the anecdotal narrative. There is nothing Twilight Zone-y about the Silly Putty special effects -- as costly and seamless as they are stomach-turningly ugly. Streep hits the ground running in a Broadway song-and-dance number (voice of Streisand, gams of Ann-Margret), and she stays throughout several strides ahead of the rest of the movie.

Goldie and Meryl make a sexy and sometimes funny pair of enemies in this satire of Hollywood's obsession with youth -- Willis, well, he's fine playing a totally anti-Willis character --, but the film feels mostly like a showroom of make up and special effects than the hilarious black comedy it was supposed to be.

Incredibly silly and dark. I remember being scared by the poster when I was a little girl. Enjoyed the hammy acting (only the great Meryl could be so good at being a bad actress) and the interesting casting of Bruce Willis as a timid, ugly and pathetic plastic surgeon/undertaker. The effects were pretty good for the time, also.

The camp, the huge performances, and the wacky special effects give this Zemeckis film a huge boost. The plot is barely there but the three leads are having enough fun in the screen so that there is always something to look at. I have a feeling this isn't good but I love it.

Every one of those points is for Meryl Streep. This movie re-affirms my belief that, while Streep is a decent dramatic actress, she is a GREAT comedienne. She manages to wring not one, but several unforgettable comic moments out of this dreck (with no help from the director whatsoever). Without her, I would have found this thing pretty much unwatchable. Gotta admit, though, I like Bruce Willis the wimp. Goldie Hawn plays a more irritating version of every other character she's ever done.

Too silly, maybe. High energy. Memorable body horror effects. Willis plays against type, reminding one of Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman. This could have been much more pervy and interesting; wasn't it the heyday of the erotic thriller, and guys like Cronenberg and Lynch? This barely even hits Tim Burton levels of weird. Perhaps the cast had their reputations to consider.

Death Becomes Her is thoroughly entertaining despite being ridiculous & pulpy. With plenty of over-acting that actually works, it's nice seeing Willis genuinely try. The tongue-in-cheek satire of vanity, underscored by Willis' hilarious refusal, is obvious but not too pushy. Zemeckis (& Silvestri) capture camp well, with the rooftop scene being reminiscent of Back to the Future. The effects hold up really well, though I'm curious how the film would've turned out if Kevin Kline hadn't pulled out.

Actress Madeline Ashton has seen better days. When her old friend Helen Sharp proposes to her fiancé Ernest Menville, she doesn't hesitate for a moment to steal it, because as a talented plastic surgeon, Ernest can beautifully revamp her appearance. Years later, Helen is given the opportunity by the witch Lisle von Rhoman to drink from the well of eternal youth, which rekindles the competition between the ladies.

The direction is great, the cinematography is great, the music is wonderful, the special effects are charming, the performances are astounding, and the set design is A++. But the first half-hour-plus of this movie, up to when the plot starts going off, does nothing but make hateful jokes and blame women for being caught in a system that demands something they can never provide, and then it has the *temerity* to give a big "this is the moral" speech at the end? No thank you.

Amusing enough just for the wild performance by the three leads. Everyone is a despicable slime ball and it's a lot of fun seeing everyone's plans go to shit due to ego and pettiness, with a dash of immortality. On the other hand, I didn't much care for the male lead being portrayed as having the moral conscious despite the fact his actions are what set the conflict to begin with and he never tries to reconcile this. Would have been better if he just went batshit insane and paid for it.

Quite daring at times for a mainstream film, DBH, in retrospect, was perhaps an early warning sign that Zemeckis was prioritising effects over story, but it mostly works here because the black comic edge is unexpected, and Hawn and Streep are a blast as narcissistic rivals clawing each other's eyes out like mad cats in heat. Willis is also effective playing against type as an emotionally beaten down nerd.
