Watching people play pool is the only thing this movie has to offer, it's not particularly interesting or good, and has no plot developments except people playing different games of pool, and they just don't do enough trick shots to make that interesting.

this felt like a TV movie sequel. like, Return to Mayberry but with Paul Newman. nothing about the Hustler was unresolved, but it's as if CBS re-runs were strong to they enlisted Scorsese to check up on what ol' Fast Eddie had been up to these past 25 years. it's one of those sequels that reminds you why most films don't have them -- lives, real or fictional, are most interesting when edited and shaped. I cared about Fast Eddie enough to enjoy The Hustler but not enough to wonder years later

One of the most underrated films of all time. I like Scorsese, and this is my unlikely favorite of all his films. I have always been a fan of both Paul Newman and Tom Cruise. The concept of the film appeals to me immensely (old lion trains new lion, old lion gets burned by his own creation). It is a modern day Frankenstein in a way. It is also a tale of rebirth--a life-affirming story that says "get back into the game of life."

In a tale of two conflictive egos, Newman is the old experienced Hustler who sees a mirror of his youth in Vincent, and the potential that he feels that he never quite fulfilled in his day. The psychological war, and the effect that these two men have on each other as they chase their own glories, including the input of Vincent's girl, makes for an interesting, fun and well-paced spectacle. The camera work and cinematography is subtle and well done, as can be expected from a Scorsese film.

A lesser Scorsese picture, but one that still holds his signature direction and camera work. The premise isn't incredibly interesting, but the smokey pool hall scenes and terrific framing of shots gives it a sense of cool that keeps things from feeling dated. Newman gives a subtle, yet emotional performance that counters the live-wire Cruise. The dialogue doesn't quite live up to 'The Hustler,' but despite the small flaws it's still a fitting send-off for classic character Fast Eddie Felson.

In 1962 Paul Newman was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for playing Fast Eddie Felson. He was robbed, and didn't win his first Best Actor Oscar until 1987 after reprising the roll of Fast Eddie in this amazing movie. Tom Cruise plays the cocky prick that you don't really like, but kind of do. Newman plays an aged Felson brilliantly, filling this entire movie with quotable lines that you can't help but repeat every time you play pool. Classic movie!

It's probably a slog if you don't have any interest in pool, but if you do, this one is a delight. The inevitable comparisons to The Hustler are misguided, though it is Newman's reprise of his performance as Fast Eddie, this film is a thematically and cinematically different beast. Particularly, because Scorsese wasn't yet obsessed with gangsters nor experimenting with period pieces, so this flick was refreshingly honest. Scorsese even managed to get a good performance out of Tom Cruise!

The twenty-five-year interval between this and The Hustler should prepare us for some pretty radical changes, and any perceived differences or inconsistencies in the character of Fast Eddie Felson will be smoothed over by the incontrovertible fact that it is the same actor, though different in some ways too, who plays him. Harder to chalk up to the march of time, however, are the differences in cinematic tone and pitch and temperament and all that sort of thing

Not sure if I'd call Cruise's performance great, but he's a perfect fit for the role and while Newman is great. It's not particularly original and uses a lot of "old generation clearing the way for the new" tropes, but it gets the job done and has a lot of great little moments.

Newman is incredible. He hooks you in with magnetic charisma that is so much better than the movie he is in here. It's repetitive. The scenes are mostly variations of Eddie giving advice to Vince, Vince ignoring said advice resulting in an argument that threatens their rag-tag group. Lather, rinse, repeat. Newman, though, is worth it. Easily the worst of Scorsese's odd output between Raging Bull and Goodfellas despite nice moments.

Almost every Tom Cruise movie from 1985-1992 has an IDENTICAL plot: Brash young man with uncommon talent (insert cool profession here) is mentored by an older and wiser version of himself, while romancing a woman out of his league. I recommend viewing in this descending order of watchabilty: Born on the Fourth of July (soldier), Top Gun (fighter pilot), The Color of Money (pool hustler), Far and Away (settler), Days of Thunder (race car driver), Legend (warrior), Cocktail (bartender)...

I enjoyed watching Paul Newman reprise his role from The Hustler, and Tom Cruise is a perfect hot-shot pool playing douche bag. I also liked how 9-Ball represents how a sense of artistry has been lost from the game of billiards. Somehow though I felt like there was something missing; a certain spice typical in Scorcese pictures that didn't make it to this one. Still good, but not great.

I don't know. I'll admit I didn't give it the most careful viewing. But did I miss much? I won't slam it for not being wholly in the spirit of THE HUSTLER, but on its own terms, it feels kind of hollow. Fast Eddie and Vincent are constantly at odds over the most trivial matters, seemingly for the sole purpose of adding tension. Newman is quite good (his Oscar was mostly a career award, but he's good enough to justify it), but Cruise is just okay. Scorsese's direction is fine, if not his best.

The Color of Money is another visually striking piece of filmmaking from Martin Scorsese and there's some impressive cinematography too. But by his standards this isn't his most groundbreaking or memorable work. However this sequel of sorts is Paul Newman's film and it's all about the belated return and fitting send-off of one of his most iconic characters - Fast Eddie Felson. He gives the coolest performance of any 60 year old I've ever seen and you root for the re-birth of his character.
Rated 21 Mar 2015

A plot that really means nothing, its an excuse for Newman to do his Fast Eddie again and it's a decent vehicle - he's charming, but much more sinster, in his own way. Tom Cruise oversells it a lot, as he does. Lots of filler-feeling montages take up a lot of the time, and a highly dated score. Still, I do love it when a film decides that whip-panning is in this year and GOES for it.

Uneven film, which is compelling in the first half, as the relationships between Cruise, Newman and Mastrantonio develop, but loses its way with incessant pool table scenes and overcomplicated psychology. The best material is in the simple dialogue scenes where these actors give their all. Pool is not the most exciting cinematic game. Also the sound mix was awful in this film - packed with whisper-soft dialogue and ear-busting bursts of music. Finger on the volume all the way, thanks Scorsese.

Newman carries this film with his charisma. The screenplay from novelist Richard Price would leave you to believe that this is somewhat classier affair than it actually is. It is repetitive. There are great montages that elevate the movie momentarily with longtime Scorsese collaborators like cinematographer Michael Ballhaus, Editor Thelma Schoonmaker and musician Robbie Robertson that make this a worthwhile watch.

THE COLOR OF MONEY is a reboot masquerading as a torch-passing moment. It's arguably most interesting as a comment on its stars' trajectory at the time, and as a (successful) attempt to influence that narrative. But something feels lost in the pivot to Newman's character; he's certainly a charismatic enough presence, but two are surely better than one. Scorsese does his usual thing with soundtracks and fringe subcultures, although this time it's more serviceable than spectacular.
