Well-made, but the persistent misogynist violence displayed towards the female protagonist and women in general, while condemned, is difficult to handle. Also, the condemnation seems a bit over-reaching, as though the film feels it has to tell us that violence towards women is wrong because we otherwise wouldn't be able to figure that out.

The treatment is very hollywood for a Swedish movie, but it doesn't cut corners. The two leads were interesting for me all the way, -whodunnit- aspect is mediocre, luckily it's not central to the flow. Reccomended.

A photo of the murder victim shows her looking in a different direction to everyone else in the picture so that means she must be looking at the killer? Really? Salander is an intriguing character, but that isn't enough to elevate this from being yet another humdrum murder mystery, complete with a predictable one-clue-leads-to-another narrative, exposition-heavy dialogue and a laughable Scooby Doo ending where the bad guy sits down and explains everything for our convenience. Very average.

Before its even clear what importance the female lead has in the story the audience has to endure several graphic and pointless rape scenes. This isn't high art, its "I Spit on Your Grave" with subtitles and goth fetishism masquerading as a feminist empowerment film. There is nothing new or groundbreaking in the main "mystey thriller" story either, just cliche montages of the main characters pouring over archives and decoding the usual conveniently placed answers.

Yawn. Over-long, over-complex, over-predictable, run of the mill thriller. The theme of sadism, abuse and girl power rescues it from being complete dross but it has little to really make it stand out as a piece of cinema.

Rapace's Salander ranks among the best tough-as-hell female leads I have yet encountered, not only due to her physical attributes or bad-ass exploits, but mostly from the contrast drawn between her conscience-stricken demeanor and the vile nature of society's members. Some misfires aside, "TGWTDT" astounds with its engaging mystery and strong characters, cementing the old saying that revenge is indeed a dish best served cold.

Don't watch this movie expecting a original detective story, because then you'll miss the point. This is a character piece with a few flaws in execution (contrived 'clues'), which don't matter very much since it focuses so much on psychological aspects. A great female lead and realistically gritty atmosphere will make it worth your time!

featuring fine examples of much spoofed "detective investigation montages", a dike hacker (toting a macbook nonetheless), a very loosely woven plot (due to runtime constrictions) and unrelated rape scenes that could be totally omitted, the girl with the dragon tattoo scores my "overrated foreign movie of the year" award comfortably. didn't read the book, it may be bee's knees, as for the movie, sorry, no cigar.

I'm probably gonna get hollered at for saying this...but I was surprised by how utterly ordinary this was. And how grungy-looking. It's got the appearance of a straight-to-video potboiler and the plot of a Sunday night hunk o' Lifetime drivel. I'm assuming there's something about Larsson's prose that's appealing, because story-wise, Dan Brown has it all over this, and I hate Dan Brown. Rapace's a simmering, commanding presence, but this is disappointingly, aggressively unmemorable.

Commandingly sadistic. It has its good parts (acting) but I found the direction poor. Sexual abuse/pain inflicting scenes just drag and grind you to a pulp so that you understand the message. Severe cuts needed to be made.

This is a basic crime drama, well done and well acted. What separates it from others is the damaged and vulnerable Lisbeth character. It gives you enough info that you feel like you getting to know her, but she is still mysterious. Her character is the value of this movie and I look forward to learning the character further in the next two films.

Noomi Rapace! A little dynamite. Although she doesn't match the Salandar's physical attribute, she literally carries the movie on her very thin shoulders. But she is not the only reason to watch this gritty and complex movie which turns out to be a faithful adaptation of the classic first instalment of the Millenium Series. Michael Nyqvist as the horribly miscast Blomkvist does manage to bring sincerity in his portrayal.

For a thriller that goes over two hours in length, it managed to keep me entertained. It did get off to a weak start, and there was some padding that could have been removed, but once the plot kicks into high gear, the mystery that the two leads have to solve will keep you engaged. The characters are all interesting, and since not all that much is explained about them, we continually question their past, and what makes them who they are today. It's certainly something you should give a look.

Awesome stuff here, from a country that I wasn't expecting it from. Great acting from actors who fit right into my own perceptions of the characters based the novel. Nice editing and screenplay. A really well-made mystery, regardless of its origin. I'm afraid America is going to ruin it like it did to Vanilla Sky.

Really a very different pace than the American one, mostly procedural and concerned with the mystery over the characters; which isn't necessarily bad. It's main faults lie in some actors not cutting it and some very boring production quality. And after seeing the vacant wretch that Lizbeth was in Fincher's (really don't care which is more faithful), it's hard to accept this version.

I really liked this Swedish film about a young female hacker and a male journalist researching the 40 year old disappearance of a 16 year old girl. Great acting from the two leads, superb tension and some nasty surprises. The pacing is a little slow at times, and the ending that holds your hand and spells everything out is too long, but the mystery unfolds in a very clever and satisfying fashion.

Suffers from feeling rushed with the labyrinthine Larsson plot being crammed into two hours. And, on the surface, it isn't that compelling, resembling any number of detective or forensic serials that middle-aged people for some reason devour. What elevates it beyond average are Rapace's performance and the assault on Sweden's pretense of having reached the 'end of history' in regard to class warfare and women.

Complex and brooding mystery carried by strong understated performances and darkly intriguing if a bit perplexing tone. I watched the extended three hour cut and I have to say the running time and restrained style are a mixed blessing. At its best it feels well rounded and atmospheric, at its worst it feels stretched, overelaborated, tonally conflicting and TVish. Engaging and suspenseful story but a very difficult one to adapt into film. This is a competent and cool-headed effort though.

Tautly-directed, absorbing thriller with an excellent performance by Noomi Rapace in the title role. Rapace does what an actor should do in such a situation: she does not worry about whether the audience will like or understand her performance, but merely burrows deep inside the character and finds the Lisbeth in herself. As a result, she compels our attention, and our understanding and sympathy follow.

Maybe I'm just biased against these types of films because of the glut of the genre from Lifetime/Ashley Judd, but I don't see what all the supposed 'critical acclaim' was about. It's a perfectly acceptable whodunit, and doesn't fall into the usual moronic failings by these kinds of movies. Moreso, the camera work and cinematography is excellent, which certainly gives things a lift. Still, it's a generic murder mystery, and one that runs a bit long at that. MIldly recommended.

I really enjoyed the two main characters in this. The character development was very well done. However, I was happy to have the ability to fast forward through the rape scene. The misogyny in this film is simply too pervasive for it to be enjoyable. I feel it was well-made, but it also did nothing that Klute didn't already do better, without making us sit through endless content on the murder and abuse of women.

Tough to deny it's a bit overrated, but that certainly isn't to say it's anywhere close to bad. In fact, it's a solid little mystery/thriller with a great performance from Noomi Rapace, even if some of the mysteries are solved via somewhat cinematically dull hacking and internet searches. Some "whoa now!" violence too.

Interesting mystery/crime drama that takes odd turns but is still predictable. It fulfills some typical cliches in the final third of the film which is disappointing after an intense first hour. The characters and situations might not be very believable but they are intriguing in their back story. The performances are strong throughout which is also commendable. Even though none of the sexual depictions are remotely appealing Rapace still manages to somehow come off as strangely attractive.

Stieg Larsson's books are great, his millenium trilogy reached cult status and what about the movies? I recommend you to read the books. The Movies are only a constrained alternative.

During the first hour or so this film seems nervous about its own execution. This is due to the fact it has a unique set of characters and is intelligent about the way it handles the plot. It really settles in nicely and when the film is over you are pleasantly surprised with the amount of ground it was able to cover and how richly these characters were developed. This is one of the most complete films i have seen for a long time and the American Version better not ruin the magic.

"Män som hatar kvinnor" is an often gripping and straightforward crime thriller. Oplev's direction is skillful and precise, while a sharply written script provides us with a compelling mystery and interesting characters to root for. Characters that are brought to life through the superb performances of the two protagonists: the understated Nyqvist and the ferocious Rapace create convincing chemistry. And although part of the resolution is underwhelming, as a whole, the film remains remarkable.

Bit hard 2 follow given the number of relative's backstories& it doesn't help that the main clue involves way more conjecture than deduction around the grainiest of newspaper fotos. Still, the message re: violence against women is delivered powerfully w/out ever becoming didactic/Lifetime-ish. It also pulls off an odd balance betwn the darkest violence& characters suggestive of an adolescent power fantasy w/ purely monstrous villains& a brilliant heroine whose goth garb might as well b a costume

Well-made, well-acted for the most part (especially the guy who plays Bjurman is magnificently sleazy) and pretty entertaining. My real problem with it probably stems from the books, as I simply cannot believe that a character supposed to be this superjournalist is so stupid, much less that a detective working on the case for 30-40 years would never even have thought to check if the numbers were related to bible passages (or at the very least go beyond the thought that they were phone numbers).

Such a terrible shame Noomi Rapace couldn't be the star in Fincher's version(s). Unlike my GF I think the Hollywood $$$ & Fincher's great skills make the US remake better in almost every respect (except messing with the ending). However, not using the actress who defined the role, speaks perfectly good English (See Sherlock Holmes II, Prometheus etc) and is (to me) prettier than her replacement, was a travesty. Missed opportunity to make GwDT Fincher's best ever. Why did that happen?

Plays like a Sherlock or Agatha Christie mystery in that it's a bit contrived and artificial, but still very engaging to watch. The subplots and side stories are pretty good too, and the performances give the film an extra edge. The darkness adds to the film's tone and strange energy, but it still holds a bit back. That's both a good thing and a bad thing. I think the film's impact might be stronger if it went darker and further, but I probably would enjoy it less were that the case.

I really liked the original title more, which better sets you up for what to expect. Either way though, it's a really solid thriller and mystery, although the conclusion kind of comes out of nowhere and doesn't really arrive from deduction as one might expect from a mystery. But Lisbeth and Mikael are great (both the characters and the acting), but this film needs to be seen with the sequels for a lot of it to be explained. Score is not a grade.

A solidly-constructed murder mystery, the only downside is that every second scene is a murder-by-numbers cliché seen before in any number of thrillers. The obligatory historical photos, obligatory newspaper research, obligatory code to crack, obligatory torture scene, and obligatory car chase. The most important point to make here is that for the first time in film history, our heroes use computers realistically. I also loved how the mystery is complex, but not unsolvable. Oftentimes mysteries try to be far too clever, becoming labyrinthine and unintelligible. Normal people of normal intelligence would have a shot at solving this mystery. And yet the story remains compelling as hell. I love this film.
