A Lynchian Big Lebowski. I was entranced throughout. I blame no one for seeing this as pretentious nonsense, but I am choosing to enjoy this life. And I enjoyed the hell out of this. That piano speech was something else and all I could do was fathom the copyright costs. Pretty amazing. Andrew Garfield is slowly becoming my least favorite, favorite actor.

A try at a mysterious, dazed, and slightly psychotic L.A. detective story that miscalculates our investment in a grungy loser's creepy fascination with conspiracy theories. Of course he's looking for a girl, or rather girls, who in fantasy sequences consistently bark at him. It's pointlessly uncomfortable, just like the anachronistic noir style that doesn't capture the chill and danger of the modern city at all. There's a stink to this film.

Why is every pool in LA somehow also the pool from Sunset Blvd.? One could get caught up in lore and conspiracy (LA Times 01/29/1934) but every Angelino knows there's a perversity in the air; a sickness that propels idiots to ascendancy and/or nothingness, that keeps this city running smoothly: "The whole place seemed to have been stricken with a kind of paralysis, out of beat with the rest of the world, crumbling apart in slow motion." This film simply replaced a pool with a lake.

All the while, he plumbs the depths of his own obsessions to figure out whether or not there's any meaning to it all - a question that's only partially answered. But who cares? What a blast.

Aw man, people really do suck sometimes. Calling this movie 'mysoginistic', because it shows men treating women superficially, is along the same lines of logic as calling schindler's list 'antisemitic', because it shows men killing jews. And the only thing this reveals, is that you don't have the slightest idea how to deduct a message from something, if it isn't handed to you on a silver lake...err plate.

I really tried to enjoy this movie, but they kept finding ways to ruin the fun. Was it destroyed by stupid vampire elements? Perhaps it was the extremely cheesy creepy old man who writes all the music with hidden crazy messages in them? At times it was worse than roll-you-eyes bad. The plot was idiotic at best. In any case, I got so tired of it by the end that I wished I had just walked out at the beginning.

A game effort at a Lynchian/Hitchcockian hybrid (with echoes of DONNIE DARKO); this starts as a captivatingly surreal mystery, maintaining interest for about an hour, before it drinks its own Kool-Aid and becomes a numbing hodge-podge of conspiracy ideas, which are ultimately pretty dull and uninteresting. Garfield is essentially the whole show, and he remains a compelling presence throughout; in isolation, the Hitchcock tributes (and CHINATOWN shout-out) work well. Possibly worthy of a rewatch.

There are some excellent scenes (the piano scene, a conversation near the end of the movie, etc), but this didn't do it for me as a whole like it should have. Filmed like a throwback to the classic noirs but with a really weird story, it can't maintain that kind of suspense that the best movies in the genre can. It's really disappointing because all of the strange elements should have lead to a memorable movie but it was mostly just long and a little tedious at times.

It's a world where everything is connected, nothing makes sense, and elites live in their own little world, conniving their best to keep the 99% down where they belong while they are completely blind to it. Seems to be made by a guy who has seen a lot of good old movies, or at least clips from them, and has read a lot of clever books, or at least paragraphs from them, and has been given carte blanche to show us all that he has learned. Of all the many influences and references, perhaps the key one is THE LONG GOODBYE, but unlike that melancholy masterpiece about a slouchy LA detective without a clue, this seems to offer nothing but a lifeless and barren desert that stretches on and on. DOA. Avoid.

Ambitious and intriguing sophomore work by the maker of "It Follows", it's one of those very oneiric alternate-timeframe neo-noir adventures like Gilliam's "Brazil" or, moreso, PTA's "Inherent Vice", but set in the (mock) 90s and sex-obsessed. I found it a little noncommittal, often appearing to feign depth before taking refuge in silly humor. It isn't quite the scary mindfuck it might have been. Nonetheless, there's quirky fun in watching this, and I appreciate its intricacy.

This film is the definition of pretentious : Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified. Filmmakers bring no new ideas to the table : rich people are crazy, Hollywood runs on exploiting the young and the beautiful and everything is a remix of previous human endeavour. And yet reference better films from Hitchcock, Siegel and Altman. This film could have been cut down to 90 minutes and lost none of its message.

Pynchonian web of odd sub-plots and characters, the main theme seeming to be about our obsession with pop culture and how it bleeds into and defines our lives. Andrew Garfield's character goes farther and farther off the deep end in trying to decipher codes and messages in popular music, movies and magazines (while he should be trying to find a job instead since he's on the brink of eviction) only to find a fittingly absurd conspiracy of escapism at the end of it. Stylewise it's a treat, too.

I'm kind of fascinated by this movie. It's definitely not the Lynchian masterpiece that Mitchell might have been going for here, but it has a lot of really promising qualities. Garfield's performance, the great visuals and interesting story all lead to a really interesting watch that's hard to describe outside of Hollywood Lynch worship. I liked it, even if I might not have understood everything.

I see what DRM's trying to do. I hate how he's doing it. It's like if 'Inherent Vice' or 'The Big Lebowski' were less funny, less unique, less captivating. Somewhere in the film DRM wants to make some pointed messages about popular art and consumerism and artistic translation and the act of creation and the Male Gaze and the objectification of women in show business and god knows what else but I couldn't parse it all out over the sound of his huffing his own farts.

Like a 12-year old tried to make a Lynchified version of Inherent Vice, without actually having seen any David Lynch (what is the 'songwriter' scene doing here?) Nothing in it works. Like watching a noir from the perspective of a minor character who's terribly paranoid - except that his paranoia turns out to be correct (and based on nothing). There are two horrible scenes where he guesses at a puzzle and then it turns out to be correct. Either a parody or a fever dream.

It's a scatter of well trodden territory, and this film exists in the realm of The Big Lebowski or Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, other comedies about amateur sleuths diving out of their element and down the rabbit hole of L.A. Silver Lake's dizzy spiral of dangling threads is occasionally scary, often hilarious, and so irresistibly weird. It's a hell of a thing.

There is only voyeurism, meaningless sex, and the slow unmasking of the depraved structure of the modern metropolis. The dive into paranoia and conspiracies is different now that the iconic cultural tropes have been revealed as coming from sex abusers and dirty old men. The author is dead and we are left with tombs and tombstones.

This film hit that emotional sweet spot that I have involving parties hidden in the cracks of walls. And the specific aesthetic that reflects my nostalgia is thrown in there for good measure. But otherwise if you didn't like the film, I fully understand. It's sluggish, overestimates its depth, and is unaware of how many times the gross reality of Hollywood's underbelly has been exposed in the past.

It's been a while since a movie was able to surprise me this much. By that I mean the scope of this film truly caught me off guard. I love how it mixes old Hollywood with the LA indie scene. Given the subject matter the film has a sort of confidently eccentric vibe in places. The score also does a great job of establishing the Noir nature of it all. Now that being said, you certainly feel every minute of the movie's runtime, but ultimately this is still a journey very much worth taking.

Amidst its crazed sensibility, purposeful obscurity, and attention-grabbing LA-styled nightmarish surrealism, what makes this work so solidly is its sense of humour and sense of self-awareness. There's a lot to unpack in this self-reflexive and cineliterate affair, not all of it good (I'm torn on whether some of the later plot points work for what this film is), but it is a very amusing and humorous story that will generate conversation -- I'd much rather this than another It Follows.

A mid-2000s manic pixie dream girl coming-of-age meets detective movie except all of the impossibly hot and horny girls are even more lazily written than a played-out stock character I thought we had moved beyond. I would have loved this movie as a fourteen year old for obvious reasons. Where the film really fails is in assuming the audience's sympathy for the idiot protagonist and his conspiracy nonsense. It's 'Mulholland Drive' lite but what you're imagining is probably better.

Part erotic thriller with noir motifs, part off-beat comedy, with perhaps some commentary on the state of the Hollywood rich and elite. The soundtrack tries too hard to create an atmosphere of eerieness but only serves to highlight the film's emptiness. The scene with Bobb as the Songwriter is great, but the film is more effort than its worth.

It’s all pretty inscrutable but weird in a way I had a chuckle at, wrapping a fairly conventional follow-the-clues mystery around a healthy dose of “wtf?” May be the first theatrically released movie ever to feature both Super Mario Bros and like ten pairs of naked boobs.

I'm a sucker for weird shit and there was plenty of that in here to keep me entertained. Walking home from the theatre I couldn't quite shake the feeling that if Topher Grace were a movie, he'd be Under The Silver Lake: Capable enough, sure, but I get why some people find him incredibly annoying.

An Inherent Vice-like story with Southland Tales goofiness and Lynchian mystique. That may make it sound better than it actually is, but I really haven't decided how I feel about it. Something often rubs me the wrong way about a film that seems to be trying to be cult. Still, it is gorgeously shot and Garfield is magnetic.

The film never gives us a reason to care about Sarah or Sam and the journey they both undertake. The film leads us on a two hour, twenty-minute quest across Los Angeles and the final reveal is something undeserving of the sheer bonkers film-making that comes before it.

Garfield is very funny in the role and there are some interesting themes of the around how obsessive media consumption is used to fill holes within us and about rings of alienation emanating outwards from the small core of people who are actually "important." Some of it works, some of it doesn't, but Garfield is consistently funny throughout as a socially awkward maladaptive.

A bit of Lynch style(especially Mulholland Dr), a bit of Hitchcock(film noir), sort of “Brazil”, but not really. It’s such a good blend of different genres and put very well together. It always keeps you on the edge and entertained. It needed something else though. Not sure what it is, but something was missing. The ending was also a bit too much in the air. Regardless, love the style.

As a mystery comedy like 'The Big Lebowski' or 'Inherent Vice' the movie falls flat as it tries to hard to confuse you without any substance. As a critique of incel culture it works much better.

Before the movie starts, my expectations where low. Was it the director, was it the "script". Or just the combination. The first twenty minutes, the music was not fitting the movie. Later it was doing the movie better. The music belongs to a thriller in the 60s. There is a strange mix of happenings in the movie. The detective work is some time cheap. The movie that came in mind with this one was "Inherent Vice". The director could have been David Lynch. Watch and let you surprise you.

Supersized, but not bloated. The heaviness of the male gaze is uncomfortable, but not without meaning. Alternately and simultaneously hilarious, creepy, thrilling, and thought-provoking. The set pieces are excellent, what seems to be a sort of specialty David Robert Mitchell, considering for instance the swimming pool scene in It Follows. Another excellent film for him.

Under the Silver Lake; Hitchcock, Kubrick ve hatta Terry Gilliam'dan referans alıp filmi şahlara çıkarayım derken David Robert Mitchell'in kurgusuyla uçurumdan aşağı kendini atan bir film. O kadar güzel bir potansiyeli var ki bunu sadece Andrew Garfield ve sahne yönetimiyle kurtarmaya çalışmak filmi özgür değil, tutsak ediyor. Çok yaratıcı bir senaryo ve hikayeye sahip olması bir filmin çok iyi olduğu anlamına asla gelmez.

This is a weird but interesting film. Andrew Garfield is great in the lead role. The script is original and keeps you interested the entire way. Overall I would recommend this film.

Mitchell'in abartılı ve nostaljiye bağımlı tarzını çok sevmesem de bu filmde gerçekten zor ve hassas bir dengeyi çok iyi tutturmuş. Zaman zaman gerekenden biraz daha fazla şey söylese de genel olarak film boyunca tutturabildiği ton çok başarılı. Sürekli değişen genre tonları bazen yorucu olsa da yapmaya çalıştığını bu kadar iyi başaran bir yönetmen seyretmek oldukça ferahlatıcı.

There is a kind reading of it (he goes through a break-up) and a harsh one (he is a psychopath that hates women and kills dogs). And both work. Throw in that this is a perfect playground for Hollywood and its obsessions and that's just the surface. We haven't even talked about the meta-comment on puzzles and how this movie is a (fake?) puzzle itself. I mean, talking about a rich text, my gosh! Mitchell is such a talented deconstructionist!

I like the way it captures how overstimulating and exhausting modern life can be in terms of sensory overload/the media we have to disentangle and make sense of on a daily basis, then how the simultaneity of this can feed into paranoid ideation/delusions etc. Feels really derivative though and borrows way too much from things like Inherent Vice/Mulholland Drive.

I love the mix of creepy and ridiculous. Sadly it doesn't keep the tone very well for the whole duration. Also the immense amount of references (and the similarities with Mulholland Dr. and Inherent Vice) take away from the film personality.

Wow. Didn't realize I was getting into a Lynchian fever dream. Garfield is fantastic in this. There's a lot to unpack, but without spoiling anything I'll recommend checking out the subreddit for the film upon your conclusion if you're interested in further sleuthing of some of the hidden meanings. This movie was over 2 hours but felt closer to 6 in parts. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but time felt different watching it. This leaves more of an impression than expected. Strong 7.3.
