Episodes 4-6 gained a rabid following of sci-fi misfits. Episodes 1-3 quaked the fan community's faith. Now, we see a return to form, an apology to the fans in the form of an infinitely better movie. For the uninitiated, or the fence sitters, like myself, "The Force Awakens" is an entertaining and complacent revelry in the universe that Lucas created forty years ago. The world building has ended, and fans may be sated, but I'm a little disappointed, but that's not to say it's not a good movie.

don't worry about spoilers...you've already seen the entire movie. in 1977! well, and '80, because they obviously knew how to pace back then. today's special is mostly a barrage of conveniently placed plot devices mixed with overzealous nostalgia appeasal. it's not all bad, and surely we don't need to discuss production values. but with everything at their disposal, the talent, an entire universe to pick from, all they come up with is a messy rehash? sorry yoda, seems there actually IS a try.

Perfectly acceptable sequal. J.J. Abrams uses his filmmaking skills to bring Star Wars back to life with incredible, intense action, some solid shots, and high octave visual effects. Acting is all pretty good and the new and old characters are likable. Really feels like a modern reflection of the original trilogy and for sure better than episodes 1-3. A very good sci/fi piece and one of the best in the whole franchise in awhile, and it's different enough than Episode IV to like. Bravo!

Abrams delivers! (of course) His fast-moving and always exhilarating seventh part is, thankfully, just about fanboy perfection. Which made me very happy and relieved. With skillful, charismatic turns from Ridley, Boyega and Ford in a recognizable story across worlds that feel part of the saga's universe, The Force Awakens basically gives us (A) New Hope... and I'm confident that Johnson will bless us with a sequel every bit as fun and delicious. [As it turned out, I was mistaken... Boo!]

It would have been nice if Star Wars was completely rebooted with a totally new story that had nothing to do with the previous films. I would have been able to enjoy the fresh and likable faces of Kylo, Rey, Finn, BB8, and Poe without having been bogged down by the past. Of course, this would have required good writing and new, original story ideas; something I'm not convinced this sequel trilogy is capable of.

Everyone is calling this the third best Star Wars, which is a lot like saying Paulie is the third most famous Wahlberg, and he doesn't even exist. I'm also kind of sick of movies being praised for feminist overtones just because the female lead doesn't spend the whole movie sucking on her own tits. This movie happened, and none of us are any better for it. Especially Mark Hamill, who probably got paid per word.

Laying the foundation for the forthcoming "The Force Has a Late Breakfast" and "The Force Calls in Sick," as well as the spin-offs "Confessions of a Tusken Raider," "Sunset over Dantooine," and "Always Bet on Fett," the Force Awakens succeeds in its job of doing absolutely nothing while somehow not pissing off 700,000,000 men with beards, myself included.

A massive disappointment tbh. Even with the constant throwbacks to the originals, it doesn't "feel" like Star Wars at all. It's more a "cover movie" helmed by a team with too much money and a lack of vision. Initially, it seemed to be ticking off most of the right boxes, but the "safe" script proved to be too stilted, poorly paced and even irrational. IMO, it fails to even play up the nostalgia factor properly. I'm a millennial, but I'm feeling more like a bitter old curmudgeon about this one.

I shouldn't be writing this review just yet. I am still quite shell shocked and there is a lot I need to process. Over the next few months I'll probably scrutinize the finer details of the plot and fantasize about where the franchise will go next. But for now I just simply cannot believe that he is gone. That is the biggest thing I need to wrap my head around. He's gone and he's never coming back. It is such a strange thing to verbalize: George Lucas, you cannot hurt me anymore.

The only reason people are eating this up is deep down they are watching a rehashed and updated version of A New Hope, yet they fool themselves into thinking this movie is a step forward. I have no faith in JJ because he likes to play it safe (but he calls it paying homage, remember Star Trek?) and makes sure the the movie won't flop. I'm pretty sure he is out of ideas, and I have no hope for the next installment.

The evil empires in the Star Wars universe really need to reconsider whether these spacefaring death machines are worth the investment. Sure, you get to blow up an entire planet from time to time, but that inevitably leads to your own destruction. At least they should reconsider the spending on weapons systems vs. vulnerability studies. Anyway, despite some flaws this was pretty fantastic. The best Star Wars in over 3 decades equals a entertaining cinematic experience. And hardly any lens flare!

Order of the day was "Don't fuck up," and this more or less succeeds in admirable fashion. Granted, it cribs WAY too heavily from the original Star Wars, to the point that it's essentially a cover film instead of a soft reboot, but in its favor are an interesting new cast of characters played by charming actors (Boyega and Ridley kill it), a sly sense of humor and some thrilling action setpieces. It's not a home run, but a leadoff double is plenty.

Everybody can relax. J.J. has made a fine movie, that both pays homage to the legacy (albeit, almost unavoidably, borders on fan fiction to some extent) while adding fresh energy to the saga. This being the seventh chapter out of nine, I guess you can't fault it for coming off somewhat fragmented, but it does feel a bit more like they're bridging a gap, rather than telling an adventure in its own right. Still: the force is awaken, no doubt about it.

I don't know what the fuzz is about. Abrams delivers the style of the old movies, which is pretty great. And Han Solo is as cool as he could be. But in the end it's just a well made fan film. Except for some decent new characters, Abrams brings in nothing new, it feels so redundant. And who cast Adam Driver for the role of Kylo Ren? And why? I expected a little more from Abrams.

I'm a bit disappointed. Whole thing seems to me like a mosaic of previous movies with sole intention of introducing new set of leads which will replace the old one. Sure there are some good points also, like H. Ford is badass as ever and D. Ridley is really good. On the other (dark) side, things are much worse. Bad guys are far less believable than in older movies.

The Force Awakens is the Star Wars film that we have all waited such a long time for. And I'm both thrilled and relieved to say that we have definitely returned to a galaxy far, far away. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega & Adam Driver are all impressive & Harrison Ford is perfect once again. This truly is a delightful & nostalgic cinematic experience. Full credit to J.J. Abrams and everybody involved for crafting the perfect platform for Star Wars to rebuild on. I have high hopes for Star Wars again.

Don't believe the hype, don't believe the raving fanboys and by no means believe the blatantly lying, Disney-bought critics. This is a storyless and soulless, stinking POS. Quoting youtuber Senju: "it feels like a slighly surreal and very expensive fan film". It also feels like a sligthly too long (2hrs worth) movie trailer made by hipsters who think that having the old, "genuine" special effects is more important than having a story. 3/10. 1 for the genre, 1 for Harrison Ford and 1 for Chewie.

What a crushing disappointment. Basically a remake dressed up as a new film. Totally wastes the great atmosphere and first-half buildup. Worst aspect was that, in the context of a remake, they had not earned the right to the one major impact scene (those who've seen it will know the scene I mean!) which manages to actually ruin the original series for me. At least episodes I-III tried to be original. This just bottled it, and badly.

So much of the goodwill is a ten year long sigh of relief that a new Star Wars film was made by a functional human. This person would, and has, calculated that the safest way to get people on board and make money is to remake the OT. Could have cut the squid monster chase, reworked the wise sensei alien, and given us some reason to care about the billions of people that got annihilated. [edit in 2021]: this aged poorly given they fucked up the other two films. What was I thinking giving this 75?

(2nd viewing) By steeping the film in Star Wars lore, the film can't help but feel stilted and perfunctory in places, as plenty of winks and nods are given to the original trilogy. But for the most part, this new entry is damn good fun, mixing classic space opera elements with a fresh and sleek approach. Yep, this definitely feels like home.

It is so rare that you run into a movie that garners such high personal expectations, and on leaving the theatre, your dominant thought is, "That was everything I wanted in this movie". "The Force Awakens" is everything I wanted it to be: an homage to the franchise's roots (some will undoubtedly argue that as re-hash/gross pandering), and a gateway to the next generation (and proof more than ever that JJ's got BALLS). As close to pitch-perfect as I could have ever hoped it to be. Literal chills.

A disappointing rehash with overwrought nostalgia. It manages to have a lightsaber fight worse than the original series! The General of the new order is awful with bad facial expressions. It uses death as a spectacle and rolls on quickly. Story is predictable with poor jokes and cringe-worthy lines. Relies on competent action but structure is loose. Not a fan of the story direction and Kylo Ren is lame. BB8 is probably the best thing about the film. What a waste.

This is on par with "New Hope"...actually it's quite similar. Daisy Ridley is a rock star and has a bright future in showbiz (take that Hayden!) Can't wait for Rogue One.

'The Force Awakens' is a competent return to the Star Wars universe that thankfully surpasses the latest installments in nearly every regard, but out of fear of alienating a fanbase that had been wounded before, the film plays it too safe, relying heavily on iconic imagery, callbacks, and nearly the entire structure of 'A New Hope' to ease viewers back. While this makes for an acceptably fun romp, it also disappointingly means that the picture lacks enough personality of its own.

Being at a midnight release with the cinema cheering as the Star Wars theme starts is a pretty special moment. What an absolute triumph is that what followed managed to match and exceed the unthinkable expectations allocated to such a title. Character/sound/visual design, pacing, script - its all on point coming together for a space opera epic. Will now happily continue buying all the merchandise I can get my hands on. Please also include Oscar Isaac into all future movies ever.

It retreads familiar ground and telegraphs its plot points to such a degree it's hard to feel surprised or really wowed by any of it, but at least Fan Service: The Franchise Re-Awakens captures a bit of that old StarryWarsy magic again. But the Eternal Trekkie in me can't help but be kinda shocked at all the shameless copy pasting from previous installments. Together with Into Darkness, that seems to be Abrams' current go-to strategy.

My grandma and mom are both fantastic cooks. During my childhood Thanksgivings, grandma would make rolls that were the best. Not hyperbole, they were the most transcendent a roll could ever be. My mom would cook and bake lots of things, but never got into making bread. She even bought one of those bread makers where you just kinda throw the stuff in and a mediocre loaf comes out. A couple years ago, my mom started baking bread every weekend. This Thanksgiving had rolls, even without grandma.

With an almost perfect cast, and some solid direction by Abrams, this will now be held in high esteem among the fanbase. The only issue I had was with the pacing and how it could feel unfocused at times, but otherwise The Force Awakens fires on all cylinders.

The first act is great, capturing a sense of fun and magic that was lacking in every single prequel. Then the old guard started to show themselves and while they didn't do a bad job, the plot itself devolved into the predictability of what essentially became a rehashed plot. I enjoyed the humor in this version over the others, and the fact that this gave Stormtroopers some depth. I'm tentatively looking forward to the next installment, but here's hoping they break out of the mold.

It feels like for every step toward originality and advancement in the saga this movie takes, it takes the inevitable step backward to retread the original's story and deliver too many in-jokes in an attempt to please the purist fanboys. Overall, it's a fun movie with new characters that are interesting and compelling enough to keep me interested in seeing more, but still, I'd have preferred less desperation in trying to belong to the old trilogy and more development for it's own.

"Star Wars: Episode VII-The Rehashed Cash Cow Awakens" is certainly palatable & well-acted, but plays itself beyond safe by retreading all the plot beats from IV through VI that made them so iconic. I hate to echo the sentiments of those bemused by this sequel, but Disney and JJ "nostalgic bloodsucker" Abrams have followed in the footsteps of Jurassic World (sans the in-movie ads) by proving that new stories and fresh blood are of little concern when pretty, shiny ticket sales are on the table.

This was pretty damn good. Genuinely exciting, balanced, well-paced and well-constructed. The makers seemed to understand what was good and what people enjoyed about Eps IV-VI, and delivered. The casting really helped as well. Was too much fan service included? Who cares?There's plenty more to learn, and unlike the prequels I'm actually interested in finding out.

I had 8 stars for my original review but I had to re-evaluate my thoughts on this, so, sorry people. It's still a great movie, but it is quite safe, I realized that I wasn't introduced to any characters that I fell in love with, and I was suffering from the high of just having come out of a Star Wars movie with my friends. With that said, it's fun, there's some good action, the script is fairly intelligent and humorous. Actors do a good job and the world-building is still ace.

This should be called Star Wars: A series of fortunate events. Plot critical characters just happen to run into each other. How is it that the beach ball droid would run into Rey who just so happens to be some kind of Bobby Fisher Jedi savant. There are moments when it seems like we're missing 20-30 minutes of training montages or character building dialogue. Star Wars finally gets the stunning cinematography it deserves. Decent overall but a bit too much fan service over creative material.

The Force Awakens is exactly what the Star Wars franchise needed after the disastrous (but not completely horrible) prequels. It is the best-acted film in the entire saga and is hilarious as well. What sets it apart is J.J. Abrams's stellar visual direction and the incredibly fast pace. After CG-filled, slow-moving snoozefests like The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, we finally have a new Star Wars film that feels like a Star Wars film.

Looks great, sounds great, but I'm disappointed with the script. Too many retreads and too much fan service. It's almost as if the characters realize they exist inside a Star Wars movie because it's so self-referencing. Also, similar plot points make it feel like a reboot rather than a continuation. Fun, but not brilliant. That said, it does bring back a stylistic cinematic quality that fits Star Wars perfectly and sets the stage for dynamite sequels as long as writers get appropriately bold.

Succeeds completely at being a Star Wars tribute, but as a movie it's lacking. There's not much of a buildup to the final confrontation(s), as the action is ramped up right from the start. I wish the main plot of the movie wasn't so high stakes - what are they going to do in the sequels? The main characters gain skills out of nowhere. Still, there's great visuals, good dialogue, likable characters well acted - but only in service of a passable, not great, story and plot.

Fortunately there r usually key differences, but the final obstacle is so r-u-kidding-me familiar the most amazing thing about it is that the filmmakers were willing 2 do it. The effects, music, and the world-building help elevate this escapist entertainment, though it's still stuck in some flashy, yet tensionless and ordinarily choreographed action sequences, leading up to a lightsabre battle that makes very little sense -- if it's explained in the sequels, then this makes for a very slippery "stand-alone" film.

The question on everyone's mind was how would J.J. Abrams do taking the reigns from George Lucas. And here's our answer, a resounding thud. First off, they make no effort whatsoever trying to explain why Han Solo looks so much older when he should be younger. They barely even reference what story line comes after this, so how can we know what's going on? Honestly, one of the worst prequels I've ever seen.

At some point you realize that the narrative structure and characters are copied from a new hope. Maybe not shot by shot but it is pretty to being the exact same movie as a new hope. However, by the time you realize that, you've already had pretty good time..

Exciting and sentimental, The Force Awakens adds some new flare to the Star Wars Saga, though where it falters is that it goes by too fast without being able to really relate to these new characters. Much of it feels like exposition and a set up for a trilogy, and it doesn't always feel like classic Star Wars because of its fast paced nature, but its glorious moments and thrilling galactic visuals mostly make up for these faults. It leaves you wanting to see so much more.

Episode VII may have just taken the spot as my favorite Star Wars movie. It exceeded all of my expectations and then some. Well written, great story, awesome new characters, and superb acting all around. Daisy Ridley & John Boyega were hands down the perfect casting choices. Even BB8 was a joy to watch. This is not only the Star Wars movie that fans wanted, it's the Star Wars movie that fans needed.

Seriously, this is just A new hope - character development - stakes + a LOT of jokes to remember you that a good movie was done 38 years ago + a LOT inconsistencies (why is there a rebellion leads by Leia Organa while the galactic governement is the Republic SHE took in place ? Saber call ? etc.). It does not only fail as a good Star Wars, but also as a good sequel and as a good movie. But it look good. And BB-8 is really fun

Good acting, better dialogue than the prequels, and solid action scenes make this a pleasant enough viewing experience but a weak villain drains the final showdown of tension while the plot is just stale rehash of a much better movie. Not bad, just mediocre.

I was sceptical because of Abrams' Trek reboot that totally failed to grasp what Trek was about. Not the case here. This is SW made by someone who has a real understanding of what made the original so fun. Some say it reuses too much from EpIV. They're wrong. It reworks, repeats and reinterprets ideas, much like every epic saga since the dawn of the written word has done and it does so magnificently. A nigh-perfect blockbuster and toe-to-toe with Empire Stikes Back as the best SW film ever made.

While it runs the gamut from action-packed romp to shallow retread, it all amounts to a satisfying and reverent reboot with unprecedented potential. It's nice to see a modern Star Wars movie that has new characters with personality, a clear and basic story with grand scale, and genuine, intentional comedy. It probably rivals the original trilogy in its incredible sense of fun -- an important attribute that helps to differentiate itself from its painfully maudlin predecessors.

I liked the characters, especially Kylo Ren as a more complex villain than the dark/light simplicity of prev star wars. The story is a bit of a rehash and telling me explicitly that the superweapon isn't just another death star bc...its bigger...didn't impress me. The action wasnt super memorable but still good. The overall adventure feel was spot on. Minor gripe that i guess in reaction so much republic politics in the prequels this excessively glosses over even needed basic elements

This aint a sequel, it's a remake - and a brazen one at that. Abrams does what he does best (ably mimicking better filmmakers' work) and Ford still oozes on-screen charisma, but it's essentially A New Hope with dashes of other 'best bits' from the series. Probably a decent film if you're new to it all, or just a fanboy wanting a mastabatory aid, but to anyone familiar with and indifferent to Star Wars this is just an insulting, seen-it-all-before waste of time. I felt ripped off.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, there's still angry black man jokes (?). This is very facile in how it resorts to all kinds of things that already worked -and much better- in previous SW installments. The way it's written this should have a few big emotional moments, but the movie doesn't ever nearly hit those targets. There's actually plenty of trouble here if you look for it -weak villain ie-, and when the dust settles you might wonder if this is actually the worst STAR WARS flick.

About as good as it could possibly get for a film irrevocably shackled to 40 years of cultural baggage. The hero's journey beats are so well played, the casting so excellent, and the script so delightfully akin to what made the old movies exceptional that I can forgive the misguided devotion to homage, the all-too regular action scenes (outside of a classically passionate and exciting lightsaber duel), and killing off Max von Sydow far too quickly.

A joyful experience even five years later. The first hour is a blast (yes, I think the rathtar sequence is a ton of fun, but I’m also predisposed to love anything with a giant spacemonster), and the second hour is solidly workmanlike with some occasionally thoughtful moments of character intrigue. It’s a little safe and a little too fan-servicey (although “the garbage will do” is one of my favorite Star Wars moments ever), but it’s an extremely well-crafted adventure in a world I love.

Thanks to a pretty funny script, solid action, interesting characters performed well, and great practical and computer-generated effects, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a film that will please both fans and newcomers alike. It only suffers from its derivative screenplay, which copies the original film in enough ways as to be noticeable, and its constant nostalgia showcasing. It overcomes those and becomes a very fun journey, leaving audiences waiting with bated breath for what comes next.

An amazing return for the franchise. Some plot holes for sure but there is nothing glaringly wrong that will bring back memories of the prequel trilogy. Some callbacks may be a little forced, but the mix of practical and effects works so well, and that moment when the X-Wings come into action and are skimming across the top of the water with John William's orchestra going is truly something special to see in IMAX.

The writers could have diverged a bit more from the original trilogy. Events and characters often felt like retreads of A New Hope. I didn't care for the sequel bait either. But the film has excellent, genuinely pulse-pounding action and rock-solid visuals. No 40-years-after-the-fact sequel will satisfy everyone, but this film came about as close as any could. Plus, to take some of the risks the writers took with these venerable, beloved characters took Death Star-sized balls.

What to say? Bravo mr.Abrams! From the first minute movie for me has that right SW feeling and I can hardly say Im too disappointed with something. Love the new characters. Kylo Ren's compexity and inner conflict as well very well made. All in all, has everything I'd expect from a Star Wars movie.

Does a great job of mimicking the story beats from A New Hope, while updating the attitude for a new generation and giving us a handful of extremely likable new heroes to go with the returning ones. Keeps the action quotient high, the tone pretty light, and the story simple. There's nary a mention of prophecy or midi-chlorians to be had. Infinitely better than Chapters 1-3 combined.

The characters were likeable and not annoying, the bad guys were intriguing and flawed, the action scenes were emotional and not choreographed, and it had the right amount of humor.

Is it a rehash? Yes. Do I care? No. To retell a tale with this much fan following, this much history and lore, you cannot jump into a complicated set of scenarios that fails to pay homage to the huge shoes its trying to fill. It places its stance firmly that this is a sequel unlike that other mess of films before it. It's here to take us back, to our childhoods, for those lucky enough to be alive when the originals were released. It felt familiar and comfortable and it felt right. Bring on more.

The rebels need to destroy a death star and a father figure is revealed to us, only so one of the main characters can be cut down at the end... Where have I heard this story before? Pretty disappointing as a part of the series, but entertaining nonetheless. Lacked character development and the whole film felt like one long, nerdy fight sequence. It didn't feel like Abrams was trying to make a sequel to Star Wars, it felt like he was just trying to remake a more action-y version of the old Star Wars, but couldn't quite manage it.

How every jedi needs a lot of training to even control the force and this girl master it from herself? Also, Kylo Ren sucks as the bad guy. He can't maintain the frame, is weaker than a girl in arm wrestling. Even a scavenger can beat him in a sword battle. That said, chewbacca has a lot of funny scenes.

From the intro sequence I knew The Force Awakens would meet my expectations. The practical effects and CGI looked absolutely incredible. Although Abrams played it safe with the tried and true formula, he created memorable characters. As much as I loved the perfectly capable and resolute Rey, I cannot say the same for the enfant terrible; Kylo Ren. However, within the context of the sequels, I believe he will be a good character. I only wish more backstory was given on the state of the galaxy.

Having no emotional childhood connection to the Star Wars franchise, I went into this film as a jaded adult, which slowly faded as my childlike sense of wonder took over. The original series was fun, but there was space opera campiness attached to the plot. This film has the feeling of actual emotional stakes, and the First Order feels like an actual threat. This film made (and will continue to make) billions, so this review is literally me throwing my voice into a place where no can hear me.

There's something ritualistic about the pleasures of Star Wars that softens the disappointment of recycled stories, characters, and even lines of dialogue. Don't want to get too pretentious here, but it's not a stretch to say Star Wars is our pop culture church, and the true believer embraces that familiarity.

The first line of dialogue nails it: "This will begin to make things right." Like his Star Trek movies, JJ revives a franchise by making it less stale, goofy, and childish. But a large part of that comes from drawing on the original vision of George Lucas. Ridley & Boyega are the couple you couldn't have had in the culturally conservative time of 1977. The universe/mythology backstory is confusing, but that, and the overarching theme of abandonment, pays off in the sequels. Highly recommended.

I have nothing to say. May not be a perfect movie, and yes there are plot elements that aren't original, that's a fact that makes me subtract 5 point of the perfect score. But given the nearly impossible task JJ had to revive this saga, he did everything else rather perfectly I think. I loved every minute, and since I came out of the cinema, I've wanted to go back in. And to all Harrison Ford haters, I simply thought he was as superb as in 1977. Star Wars is back - better than ever!

Amazing. Honestly I could never have imagined this being this good. Abrams did a great job and so did everybody else. It hits all the right notes and goes in some bold new directions. My favourite blockbuster this year, I am very curious how the sequels will be. I have nothing but love for the script and the special effects are great. It has surpassed all my expectations, easily. I hope the sequels can build on the great work that has been started here. Nearly flawless! Go watch it now!
