Harry Lime: "Don't be so gloomy. After all it's not that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. So long Holly."

I really wanted this to be a life-changing movie for me. I love noir and I really enjoyed the Graham Greene novel but in the end it was simply a very good film. I think the main issue was Joseph Cotten's flat performance. I didn't realize it was bothering me until Welles appeared onscreen and blew me away. Everything that could be said about the incredible cinematography has already been said by writers better than myself.

It's definitely a good movie but not my type. Orson Welles is very good in it. I liked the closing shot very much and some dialogues were perfect but these are not enough. I didn't like any character except Welles' character. That never stopping music was annoying for me. I don't think the story was bad but it's still an average one for me. I understand why this movie is a classic and many people love it, though.

This movie taught me how important a movie soundtrack can be. The Zither is an annoying and silly sounding instrument (hence its use in Spongebob Squarepants). Something is good about this movie but its lost beneath all those silly sounds. Recategorize the film as a comedy and it might be easier to bear.

I know a movie is great when it's chock full of Dutch angles and they actually work. One of the best shot films I've seen. It's on location filming and incredible, original score create an atmosphere unlike any other movie I've seen. A true masterpiece.

I found the first half a test of patience, affectless characters rush through a bunch of dry exposition while zither guy plays like there's a gun to his head. It feels like the opening has no breathing room and every speaking role except Cotten's amounts to the phrase "you shouldn't get mixed up in this". Then Orson Welles swoops in and everything gets more spacious, atmospheric, emotionally engaging. It becomes the film I wanted it to be all along. The Ferris Wheel scene is a standout.

Fascinating movie from start to finish. Very successful at almost every angle. Cinematography is top notch maybe one of the best. Joseph Cotton Orson Welles are geniusly good and the timing Welles appears is just great. I fucking loved this movie.
