Not bad, but not really great either. Even though I'm from Canada, I don't watch a lot of hockey, but it seemed overly violent. It had sort of weird pacing at the starting. The arc of him going from a nobody to a somebody took only 10 minutes, and then the rest of the movie moved rather slow in comparison. Seann William Scott's character was sweet, but really fucking stupid, and not just in a highschool dropout way, in an unrealistic way. The parents seemed really mean for no apparent reason.

I've been praising the subtle greatness of Seann William Scott since watching The Promotion. And he's proven it time and time again. I mean ... The Promotion, ...uh, this...um,... okay just those two. Hockey movies are always about the fighting except when they aren't. Than they are about geese.

Underneath it's crude humor and knuckleheaded exterior there is a pretty great story that could hold up on it's own without the jokes. This is easily my favorite role I've seen Seann William Scott play as he does a great job at being the big loveable oaf Doug. It's humor might not be for everyone but it's a surprisingly well done movie especially looking at the directors (Micheal Dowse) other work.

Criminally entertaining. It's like DIGGSTOWN meets SLAP SHOT. Yeah, it's kinda raunchy and meatheaded, but I had more fun with this thing than I've had with any sports movie in ages. An infectiously high-spirited, giddy blast of adrenaline; anybody who's a fan of sports flicks should love it.

Very crass film that's both oddly touching and surprisingly progressive. Scott's character, a physically capable but dim-witted individual, manages to stand up against homosexual bigotry which I believe is a welcome sign of the changing times. Goon is actually very violent and may cause the squeamish to look away but for hockey fans it's got some genuinely laughs. "Hey you want to go?" "Yeah OK." "Good luck, man." "Good luck to you too, budd."

Seann William Scott almost makes this movie worth watching, all by his ole' lovable self. It's entertaining throughout, but never uproariously funny or touching. Probably should have focused more on the relationship between the "Goon" and the talented hockey player he was there to protect.

I actually thought this was pretty entertaining. Williams Scott plays a simpleton who can take and give a beating. Naturally this gets him involved in hockey. There is more than a little Slap Shot in this but the sense of humor is just enough off center to keep it original. It isn't going to win any awards but it is solid and some of the fights are hilarious.

I heard that this was good, so I watched it. Honest to God, it didn't occur to me until I was like 20 minutes into it that this would force me to watch hockey. If sports movies don't make you want to blow your brains out, you might enjoy yourself during this one. When they were on the ice I just read my Twitter. The non-hockey scenes were alright though.

for such an otherwise liberal film, gotta wonder why such a trite, narratively irrelevant role is written for the sole female character -- incidentally, a girl whose (completely unconvincing) incessant horniness is played for laughs and seen as something to conquer. thing really needs to learn its own lessons of acceptance, and it's tough to get behind something that so wastes alison pill. otherwise, it has some pretty refreshing attitudes for what's ostensibly a frat boy comedy.

I should disclose first that I work in hockey as my profession, and that might colour my opinion. But this movie just nails the sport perfectly, and far more accurately than the somewhat exaggerated and cartoonish antics of Goon's natural predecessor, Slap Shot. The crude humour some have complained about is true to the culture of the sport. The boys on the bus are like this. I really enjoy how dumb Scott's character is. The lack of an effort to redeem him makes him all the more endearing.

For me Doug is a uniquely Canadian character, super nice and sweet even when he's knocking someone's teeth out. "Thank you for asking, sir". For such a meathead setting, there was a refreshing lack of macho posturing. A fun little drama, with a few laughs and winces on the way.

Gonna level with you...I'm irrational about Jay Baruchel. Ever since his "Undeclared" days I've had a soft spot for him, and the abdominal "I'm Reed Fish" aside, I enjoy his low-key, twitchy charisma in everything else I've seen him in. Totally plays against type here in a bit role, but is still great. Stiffler, on the other hand? Not so much a fan, but like Baruchel, plays against type here, and shocker...is kind of likable. Pretty good as far as rowdy, foul-mouthed hockey comedies go.

A movie that's difficult to watch and comedy that's hard to enjoy given what we know about concussions and how the film glorifies a position in hockey that's becoming extinct. None of the relationships are particularly deep, and it's not really that funny, but the hockey scenes are good and the film is as bloody and profane as they come.

The comedy was hit or miss, but overall Goon had some surprisingly good filmmaking. Seann William Scott was perfect as the lead. Alison Pill and Liev Schreiber did well in supporting roles. Jay Baruchel's character on the other hand could have been written better. A weird misstep for a film that otherwise had well written characters. Surprisingly the romantic elements didn't feel out of place and were rather well done. Stylistically I really appreciated how they handled the hockey fights.

Goon is decent, well-paced light entertainment. Certainly it can't really decide whether it's a sports drama or a comedy, and Scott seems a little miscast in the straight man role, surrounded as he is by overblown and goofy caricatures. The film doesn't explore Doug's psychology too deeply, and as a paean to the 'enforcer' player role, this almost seems like a betrayal, but ultimately the visceral action conveys enough: some guys like to punch other guys, but actually they're alright.

It's brutal, bloody, and obscene, and yet smart, funny, and charming. It's also a fun celebration of Canada and one of their favourite sports - I really enjoyed seeing (and hearing) Canada onscreen. Writers, director, and leads all brought their A game to make a fun and accessible sports movie that I enjoyed a heck of a lot more than any other movie I've seen in this genre. Eddie Shore! Old-time hockey! This is an intriguing film in some ways -- touching on the idea of the team, masculinity, growing up and the fundamental humility of ordinary folk. Hey...you...guys! No, this isn't the sequel to Goonies but it is a pretty funny hockey movie. The film is crass but undeniably funny, and S.W.S's character has an underdog appeal that, while totally predictable, works well in the context of a film that is anything but sentimental. Liev Schreiber is also effective as his ageing rival, 'Ross The Boss', a fearsome minor league brawler on the verge of retirement. Unlike Slap Shot, Goon refuses to cop out; it never descends into farce. The world of ice hockey is shown exactly for what it is: violent and brutish, but not without charm.

Fucking hilarious. Dowse's bad experience with the Topher Grace movie must have also been a learning one because this and Fubar II are exquisite academic examples of comedic timing and pacing in filmmaking. It's just this constant forward momentum, controlled chaos, cutting the perfect amount of time after a joke, yet with all these beautifully simple and clearly communicated character arcs and plot escalations. Pure joy from start to finish.

It's fun and breezy with very little character development. Its shortcomings are easily forgiven for the comedy and the endearing nature of Doug (Scott). It's certainly nothing special, and after the laughs it's quite hollow. The biggest crime is under using Eugene Levy.

Drops all pretence that hockey is played to decide the better team. The only reason I can see the family sub-plot existing at all is to give Eugene Levy a bit of work. In NHL 'Enforcer' videos, the game amazingly halts entirely, ref's circle like vultures and the 2 combatants have centre stage as the hockey match turns into a 1 round heavyweight bout. Interestingly, there seems to be no team mentality, the fighters are left to their own demise. It becomes essentially, a tactical duel on ice.

This is a very simple story that is executed well. It was also much better and different from what I thought it would be. Liev Schreiber does a good job as Ross "The Boss" Rhea, but this isn't shocking because he is a very good actor. The surprise of the show is Sean William Scott who gives the best performance of his career, but it should be noted that most of his career has been filled with bad movies, so the complement does not mean much.

Unfortunately in the second half the film kind of falls apart, with all the development of the first half thrown away in favour of a boring, predictable sports movie middle and ending. Love the idea of having such a stupid character as the lead -- see, he can't even say his name right when he arrives at his new team -- because it reminds me of The Wrestler (with a Farrellys' touch) and its concept of a guy that doesn't try to be more than he is and will ever be -- someone who can punch and take a punch, who's loyal to the ones he love, rough, but lovely as a little innocent kid. While classic music is played, masculine acts of violence and friendship takes place in the sink.

The world's greatest hockey Western, GOON is an unexpected source of warmth and uplift, and an unapologetic examination of the uses of violence. The film's blunt, unserious tone separates it from conventional underdog stories, as does its characters, who are truly flawed misfits and not puppyish mascots with easily-reconciled baggage.
