I follow M Night on twitter and enjoy following his updates on his filmmaking process. My favourites are when he shows his progress on a script "tenth draft time to go through again and tighten up" - what the fuck does the dialogue look like in these first drafts lmao

To steal the same joke from my most popular review: Well that's four years of my life I'm never getting back. I love Night to death, but he needs to hire a co-director who can direct his actors, because he sure as shit can't.

It's crazy how split people are on this movie. It still has Shayamalan's signature awkward-as-hell line delivery and I personally think a couple of scenes should have been edited apart or together differently. It's not a great movie by any means, but damnit, I had so much fun. The acting is superb and I liked the directing quite a bit too. I personally felt a connection with some of the characters, and a couple of scenes were very intense. Don't think too hard. Just see it for yourself!

When it's good, it's great. The extended sequence on the beach is wildly inventive, entertaining, and suspenseful. But that is all bookended by some truly atrocious dialog (made even worse by bad acting/delivery) and heaps of non-sensical over-explanation. There's a 30 minute masterpiece short film buried somewhere in here.

Am I supposed to take this seriously? The performances are usually either weird or terrible, and it has some of the worst dialogue and line delivery I've ever heard. None of the Aging makes sense and it ends up unintentionally funny. There's no good reason to care about any character here. The camerawork is terrible in places where the shots are out of focus and many faces and objects are poorly positioned, plus M. Night kept doing long spinning camera shots over and over again. Just awful.

BACK TO THE MOVIES AFTER 18 MONTHS just to watch Shyamalan save cinema once again. At the same time his weirdest since The Happening and formaly perhaps his most beautiful since The Village, as it works mostly as a chamber piece -- or a confinement outdoors low fantasy -- that dares to put characters and their families in front of humanity's eternal collective trauma -- aging, dying, literally turning into dust. Let's just watch the waves and enjoy the moment -- there will be no life tomorrow.

Great premises. Good tension. Clunky dialogue (over-explanation, unnecessary details, kids sounding old) and some editing that seemed like we missed a scene. A final epilogue that grounds the film (but feels unnecessary). Like most other MNS films, entertaining but leaves you feeling shallow. What's the deal with Mid-Size Sedan? Ridiculous impregnation. Fav scene: psychologist having a seizure, dr going to help, and the nurse bf explains the situation but also taking the time to give his name?

I expected it to be a bit more clever and diverse than it ended up being. A lot of the film consists of the characters experiencing aging in different ways (sight, hearing, etc.), and the twist is more or less told to the audience before the reveal, which is odd. Dialogue is pretty funky, not sure if it’s intentional or not. I will give credit that it contains two incredibly unique deaths that utilize the aging gimmick, which bumps up my score a bit. Not his worst or his best film, just fine.

There’s often something strange about the acting in Shyamalan movies, like he’s intentionally directing towards wooden line readings. The concept here is interesting enough to hold one’s attention for 90 minutes, though in some ways lazily carried out - the adult actors should have had more old age makeup/gray hair applied as the movie went on than they did, for example. It’s not without a couple memorable scenes I guess.

Effective psychological horror! First two acts are great at establishing creeping dread despite some flaws, and I expect some will focus on those flaws. Final act will be divisive - I thought it was too cute and tidy, but there's a lot left to linger after the credits roll. M. Night, keep funding your bonkers ideas. They're always interesting.

A fascinating concept is buried under atrocious acting and dialogue (lots of telling not showing and then telling some more: "I need to visit my sister, she's a psychologist too-" WHO CARES), a back-and-forth-spotlight narrative on the beach that's chopped up like a middle school stage play, camerawork that somehow depletes the suspense and horror instead of adding to it, and an over-explained ending that mars any thematic poignancy that came before (see the "what were we fighting about" scene).

Blah. I enjoyed this because the central mystery of what was going on kept me invested, along with some great scenes. But this is why Shyamalan should USUALLY not write his own movies. The dialogue was hokey as fuck, I enjoyed it despite what the people were often saying. Most of the acting was bad except McKenzie and maybe a couple others. What disappointed me was how inconsistent the directing was. Normally he's solid there, but he went from great shots to wtf is he doing shots frequently.

How can you not generate any tension out of this situation? The baby scene alone is a travesty – having a child be pregnant and not go into the moral and human implications is careless, to say the least. You can have the body horror in a movie like this, I guess, but make it hurt, make it real. The aged boy wonder is just moving his camera endlessly, haphazardly - is he too timid? Does he care more about laborious plotting than people? Still, I can hardly get mad at the film. It’s nothing.

This movie is heckin' wack. By far my favorite Shyamalan joint since Signs. Blissful absurdity. I was grinning ear-to-ear for the film's entirety. There's some nasty body horror stuff in here (maybe the ickiest PG-13 I've ever seen) and every other line of dialogue sounds downright unnatural. I found myself cackling. The last 15 minutes are breathlessly stupid - maybe more so than anything else in Shyamalan's career. This was a total blast; anyone that doesn't like this just hates fun.

Honestly, I didn't enjoy myself much watching this. Graphic novels always feel a little different, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised, but on sheer enjoyment, aside from the stuff that was just plain silly (intentionally or not), this missed me pretty widely. There are some high points, but once again, M. Knight's writing lets him down in pretty obvious ways, which filtered into uneven performances. What a twist, it's Big Pharma. Shout-out to rapper Pesto Pasta Salad for his career-defining role.

Old is a simple premise marred by nonsensical plot points, uninteresting characters & shoddy writing, yielding another Shyamalan entry on par with The Happening. The film looks pretty but the framing (partial face shots) is often annoying. The performances aren't good, and the script constantly opts for character tension over broaching anything remotely interesting. The ending is less of a subversive twist and more a disappointing explanation that breezes by like an unsatisfying dream sequence.

I don't think I've seen any M. Night movies since he became a meme, so it was kind of interesting to finally take one in. The story here is actually interesting and creative. But most of the other elements of the movie are comically bad--the dialogue, editing (technically competent but artistically dumb), and acting (how do you make Gael look like he can't act??). And yet... it actually keeps you pretty interested and it's mostly fun.

I think there are plenty of people being too hard on this. Old has it's faults, particularly when it comes to dialogue (mainly in the first 30 min) and some inconsistencies with it's mythology/logic. If you let those things go a bit, there is some really nice psychological horror and foreshadowing here. It plays well into M. Night's wheelhouse of weird and eerie atmosphere. Even his twist wraps into this really well. This feels like some of his best work in a long time.

Old is a horror movie, largely psychological, that's more conceptually intriguing than superbly written. Odd, unsettling, & even contextually disturbing, some themes can be quite uncomfortable upon deeper contemplation. But this movie also succeeds in a fascinating exploration of people, illness, & aging. Themes like how short our lives really are & how surprisingly insignificant many things we view as important in the moment usually are. Coupled with introspection, it's a poignant journey.

Sprinklings of competence amongst mostly farcical horror. The concept, while not bad per se, is just a little too wild to work, or at least when trying to take itself this seriously; it's not an easy one to pull off, and I don't think Knight was the man for the job. Technical execution isn't bad - he does utilise some creative camera work to deliver the concept and themes - but the characters are too silly for us to care, running around like headless chickens on a blandly presented sunny beach.

Unsubtle conversation about aging, time is inescapable, and a damning jab at pharmaceuticals, as well as a general convo on time and the treatment of medical conditions. Needed more time to cook, the body horror scene near the end is awful, but Shyamalan is more on the ball here. Some blatantly stereotypical dialogue and uneven pacing aside, the cinematography and camerawork here is masterclass and claustrophobic in equal measure. Good acting across the board too.

First rate concept. If you must watch, you must watch with 1 or more people because you will have a lot to discuss afterward. Unfortunately, a lot of that discussion will be how poorly executed it is, how ham-fisted the dialog is, and most irritatingly, how inconsistent the passage of time is. There's another quite depressing layer to the story that sucks the fun out, and this is an instance where knowing what is happening from the start would have improved it. It would work better as a novel.
