One of the most tonally unbalanced films I have ever seen. It's impossible to figure out who the intended audience is for this western that constantly shifts between cartoony, family friendly comedic action and dark western-themed violence. The story is all over the map, with cannibalism and genocide being major themes, and Johnny Depp's performance is one of the worst I've seen from a major Hollywood star. The only reason I'm giving it a 20 is for a few fun set pieces and strong set design.

There's a sizeable chunk of time (or two) when Depp is not seen on screen in which this film feels like a living, breathing thing. Cool western stuff, grandiose horse chases, engaging action set pieces, and Hammer is serviceable. But the framing device is contrived, the plot and tone is all over the place and Depp is too far gone. There's a good film hidden here, if the narrative would just shift into focus, but as it is it's hard to care. I liked Ruth Wilson and Fichtner is superb, as always.

Turns out this was actually very good. While it might be a tad long it's a lot of fun to watch with a nice mix of comedic moments and serious commentary. The cinematography is excellent and the main performances nearly so. Depp's Tonto has some superficial similarities to his Jack Sparrow in tone and energy, but both characters have quite a bit of depth and are drastically different in how they fit into their respective movies. Not quite a great film, but a very worthwhile watch.

The Lone Ranger is almost a good film. Like, it's really close. Depp is genuinely funny. The action is genuinely fun. It's just so freaking long and repeatedly unbelievable to the point of incomprehension. My theory is they actually died when they flew off the train in the opening scene and the whole thing is a pre-death hallucination. It's the only moderately rational explanation.

A weird mishmash of ideas going on here. The biggest shame is that there's some really good stuff, especially the beginning of the film when the rangers go hunting for Butch, and the final train sequence. But it's so uneven, it doesn't know if it wants to be serious or a comedy. I actually wanted more development for Reid, but instead Johnny Depp has to come along with his bullshit wackiness to defuse any sort of suspense. Also what the fuck was with those rabbits?

It is certainly entertaining and the leads are both pretty good. I have no idea what the original show felt like so I won't compare. Anyways, I thought this was perfectly fine, albeit just as ridiculous as Verbinski's Pirates trilogy as well. Story-wisenits pretty hohum. Overall it's some solid entertainment and nothing more.

A terrible effort by Disney to reinvent this once iconic trilogy. whether is Depp having paired up with unfunny Armie Hammer or the fact that they used too much of pirates over dose formula, everything about this spaghetti western rejuvenation is just wrong. If only they could take less about the pretentious comedic similarity with the "pirates". This witless over-budget western sketch could be much more fun or else exciting. truth be told,it is one of the most sleaziest summer blockbuster.

There's bad stuff in here, particularly the totally intrusive & unnecessary framing device that only serves to show how hideously inappropriate Depp's casting is. But what it gets right it gets oh so right. That it takes a lot (musically, thematically and plot-wise) from one of my all-time favourites, Once Upon A Time In The West, certainly helps. But the train action is exceptional, and I couldn't wipe the smile from my face. Like John Carter, this is a fun flick despite the critical thrashing.

This is what happens when you try to craft an all-in-one kind of flick. So, there is plenty of violence -- actually, too much violence --, FX explosions, a buddy film structure, slapstick sequences, some romance to give the hero humanity and the naive storytelling strategy -- old Tonto chatting with a kid in a museum -- to convince crowds they are seeing something really big, amusing, well-made, but still funny and vibrant. The thing is: Lone Ranger doesn't get anything near of what it aims.

There's 30-40 minutes of a good movie in here, mostly down to Tom Wilkinson & William Fichtner being awesome and some fun train-based action set-pieces. The rest of the 150 minute running time is comprised of awful humor, a contrived framing device, people aiming guns at other people but never actually shooting them, Johnny Depp's insufferable surprised face and killer CGI bunnies. With two instances of horse related toilet humor, and in 2013 no less, this deserved to fucking bomb.

The first half hour was so good - so very very good - that I was sitting there wondering "how can the whole world be so wrong about this movie?!" Every image gleamed with wit and joyful cheesiness, Depp's Tonto possessed astonishing dignity, and the writers threw a new dilemma at our heroes every 10 seconds. Then the writers switched to a TV melodrama about the Lone Ranger's brother's wife and I dozed for over an hour while Depp clowned it up and the director gave us pastiche. Until the ending!

That THE LONE RANGER is a misfire is merely icing on the cake; could a $215+ million revival of so long dormant a property ever have been a good idea? But despite some redeeming elements--a lavish production, some good action and solid dry humor--the film is too long, too predictable, and too misguided (trying to touch on American atrocities while being a popcorn film). Armie Hammer's Ranger is too much a whiny jerk, and Johnny Depp's Tonto is fairly ridiculous. Pointless framing device, too.

Lots of really bad frigging ideas here--a sissyfied Ranger, that horrendous Old Tonto framing device, Helena Bonham Carter, the fact that we're supposed to keep chuckling at slapstick after an entire Comanche tribe has been slaughtered. But I loved the twenty-minute ladder/horse/train climax, which is the best action sequence of the year so far. And no one's been talking about how insanely smoking hot Ruth Wilson is. I'd say it's worth seeing once.

This movie has a certain unique charm. Johnny Depp is in rare form with a kooky Indian character that steals the show. Arnie Hammer was a charmed naive clown. This does little to rekindle nostalgia for the original & instead pokes fun at it at every opportunity. This could easily have been titled Tonto. The story has plenty of crazy twists, turns, miraculous saves, and a few laugh out loud funny moments. Also, extra points for being so very odd.

Has there ever been a movie this Hollywood-ized? An established franchise gets an overlong, loud, and violent modern update - complete with Johnny Depp crapping out an eccentric character. It's an absolute mess.... but I admit there is some fun to be had in the final 45 minutes or so. If the rest of the movie was cut into about 45 minutes and this thing ran 90 minutes then it could have kept my (and others') interest.

I don't think there's anything really wrong with this movie. I mean, they obviously wanted to channel Pirates of the Caribbean in quite a few ways, and some of the action was pretty ridiculous, but having just seen Man of Steel, this one came off as a pretty tame, pretty family-friendly action-adventure movie. It also had a few touches of Once Upon a Time in the West in there, but of course wasn't nearly as good.

Horrendously long and boring, with a frustratingly messy structure and plot. Depp is cast for his name only (which was a waste of time considering this films deserved box office failure) and he feels hopelessly out of place. It ends on a fairly strong final act, but it's nowhere near good enough to justify the two hour wait for its arrival. There's really just nothing to recommend here.

My review of World War Z called it blockbuster film-making at its absolute worst, but the Lone Ranger already has it beat. This gets a slightly higher score out of respect for the costume designers and the fact that most of the shots were in focus, but as a whole it's a more miserable film-going experience of late than anything other than Man of Steel. The ending is almost watchable, but you have to sit through The Lone Ranger to get to it.

I'm really losing my appetite for blockbusters i guess, this movie was filled with so much stupidity that I just couldn't enjoy it. This might also be one of Depp's most plain performances. There's a reason why Keaton is a legend and movies that try to imitate it just look lame and unfunny..

This movie was decent enough. The biggest atrocity in the film was its length. A whopping two hours and twenty-nine minutes. I also didn't like how the Lone Ranger was a big wuss who was afraid to use guns... what's that all about? The added narration between the little boy and Tonto could have been cut too. The film was just bursting with superfluous scenes. The last action sequence redeemed a lot as it music and explosiveness met in perfect harmony. Hi, ho Silver, AWAY!

I don't get the negative flack this movie is receiving. Yes it has its PoC moments but the movie is enjoyable, has a smart plot and a touching way of telling the story. I liked it very much. I assume that such a harsh critic on the western society, especially US is responsible for the negativity.

It's pretty bad. Depp's Tonto is just a bunch of silly facial expressions. The title character is dull as hell, too. None of the characters are engaging at all. The plot isn't interesting either, as well as being needlessly convoluted. Oh, and the whole thing is too damn long. The humour falls flat, the visual effects aren't very good, and it proves that Hollywood just likes to rely on formulas for movies, not actual good ideas. A waste of time, overall.

The Lone Ranger is severely worse than I ever could have anticipated. It's without doubt one of the most ridiculous films I've ever had the displeasure of watching. I wanted it to be a family friendly romp, but tonally it's all over the place and I've no idea who the intended audience is. Hammer is infuriatingly unfunny and although he has his moments Depp can't salvage anything. It's overlong by a good 60 mins and it overdoses on the generic POTC formula. Horribly sleazy by Disney's standards.

The bones of this movie's story (SPOILERS - an evil industrialist frames Native Americans for raids so he has an excuse to wipe them out and build a railroad) could be part of a much better Lone Ranger film. But this one's execution is mostly dull. It feels interminably long, and little of the humor works. Neither the heroes or villains pop off the screen, and the action is generic, except bits of the climactic train sequence. Like 2013's Great Gatsby, it has an intrusive, awful framing device.

Why? Why another movie with a quirky character played by Depp and a random sidekick that nobody actually cares about? Why put so much money into a movie that was basically already out there? It's not an unentertaining movie per se, but since I had already seen Pirates of the Carribean (all parts, shame on me), I just felt like I'd wasted precious time.

depp as yet another strange-ly aloof action character only this time, he's not a pirate, he's an indian, but still remarkably reminiscent of jack sparrow. this is not a bad thing because jack sparrow has made a couple billion dollars for disney, so why not exploit the same successful formula in a different era? even if depp is now the sidekick. this one was a very entertaining adventure flick, one that i had predicted would be tainted by the tawdry and quaint source material.

Doesn't find it's feet until very near the end where it's brilliant. Think the main problem is that one of the characters, most fittingly the Ranger, should be the straight man. And it's all origin. Subsequent films if they get them should be much better now that's out of the way. 2 hours of William Tell Overture wouldn't hurt either. Well, that might be too much...

It's easy to dislike and pick apart but I just can't. Maybe it's Verbinski's love of the genre in making this or the nods to Ford, Chaplin, and the Great Train Robbery. Depp's casting makes sense given his talent in fleshing out eccentric roles but the decision to mix lighthearted fun & camp with racism and people getting murdered probably needed more thoughtful implementation. It would work as an over the top dark comedy. This has the best action train sequences ever and Fichtner is wonderful.

Those criticizing the tonal mismatch between the family-friendly elements & the grisly, violent elements seem not to understand that's the whole point. The villain is monstrous, literally a cannibal; industry & nation & law are, more than complicit, actively in conspiracy with these dark forces. Given this backdrop, the idealism of John Reid, naive & ineffective, plays as farce. Doesn't mean it's a great movie -- it's padded & puerile -- but it deserves more consideration than it's been given.

Rango was Chinatown (1974) meets eye-popping animation meets postmodern western, Lone Ranger is Chinatown meets Pirates of the Carribbean in the west. Why does Verbinski and Depp keep ripping off Chinatown, it is not called paying homage if you rip it off twice in a row. And can you guys stop casting Depp and Carter in the same movies for crying out loud? While you're at it, stop casting Carter for good. Like ever. There's never been a Lone Ranger as dispiritingly ineffective as this 1. Tonto gets fleshed out, as does the ugly history of U.S.-Native American relations which is fine, when it's not discomfitingly scraping directly against the "Who's On First?" skits. In fact, our heroes face several moral quandraries when they're not inhumanly flipping through the meticulously crafted action sequences. Unfortunately many of them r resolved confusingly, esp. when the Ranger leaves Tonto 2 b a scorpion dinner.
