From the bridge of the Fleet Battlestation Ticonderoga, with its sweeping galactic views, to the desolate terrain of planet Klendathu, teeming with shrieking, fire-spitting, brain-sucking special effects creatures, acclaimed director Paul Verhoven crafts a dazzling epic based on Robert A. Heinlein's classic sci-fi adventure. Courageous soldiers travel to the distant and desolate Klendathu system for the ultimate showdown between the species. (Sony)

Don't ask me why I love this movie, I just do. If the perfect score I've given it f**ks up all my TCIs, so be it. If on death row and given the chance to watch one last movie before being executed, yes, I would choose this over the Shawshank Redemption, 2001 A Space Odyssey, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

This is where it's at. Tits and blood and guns. Starship Troopers is unapologetically a big, dumb action flick. The story is straight 1950's B-horror, and the script and acting are terrible. But, there is TONS of boobs and gore and giant bugs that blow up real good. Oh, and a fat alien slug with a face like a vagina.

Starship Troopers is an open question: childish and violent, but swimming in subtext about appropriation of war, propaganda, The Other, and so forth. Why does it cast all white actors as Spanish characters from Buenos Aires? What does it say about engendering violence in our schools, or how the war splits the characters apart (for a common goal)? Verhoeven's brilliance is so in-your-face, it flies under the radar.

Is this movie a straightforward celebration of militaristic fascism, or a sly satire of it? (No matter what Verhoeven says, there's enough evidence for both interpretations.) In any case, this is a solidly entertaining B-movie with enough over-the-top violence and nudity to make your inner teenage boy squeal with glee.

A great social satire with some decent action tossed in for good measure. Too many people approach this film expecting a serious action movie. It's a comedic social satire action film. Keep that in mind and it should make the experience much more enjoyable, even with the actors involved only delivering decent to good performances.

I can categorically state that we've always needed a big retarded propaganda epic about what'd happen if we went balls-to-the-wall fascist in outer space. Verhoeven made the right decision in how he adapted the novel, and out of the whole cast it would appear that it's only Neil Patrick Harris in full SS regalia who's in on the joke.

Is it a satire of its genre, or a loaded political commentary? ... Can't it be both? Verhoeven manages to make a very fun movie out of this either way, loaded with guns, tits and explosions, but also a subtle intelligence. The propaganda newsreel snippets are pointedly hilarious, and I just can't say no to NPH. The movie isn't far removed from Verhoeven's other sci-fi action satire, Robocop, but this one is far more polarizing. I enjoyed it immensely, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Action SCI-FI flick that presents the novel twist of humans as xenophobic aggressors in an alien encounter. Verhoeven provides amusingly over the top action and subtle (or not) touches illustrating the fascist systems driving nationalist fervour. However, a successful parody relies heavily on the acting and for every Ironside and Brown, there is a Richards and Muldoon sucking.

less a satire of war, fascism & imperialism than how the media identifies with and facilitates them, from journalism and advertising to the most inoffensive of hollywood narratives. verhoeven understands the appeal of this media--of imagining oneself the star of a glorious fantasy, a mindless action movie or teen drama or sports flick--intimately, and by lampooning its cliches in this context he forces us to consider how susceptible to and complicit with destructive ideologies we really are.

I regret holding off watching it for 15 years, I expected nothing more than expendable schlock; What I got in return however was subversive, rip-roaring schlock. Let's face it, following the dreadful "Showgirls" with a seemingly hideous, man-against-giant-bugs actioner that takes aim at contentious Western policies isn't exactly going to arouse prospective viewers. Luckily, "Starship Troopers" doesn't take itself seriously and shines with some sharply honed satire and compelling characters.

It's about communism. It's about killing giant bugs. It's about senseless gore that hasn't been seen to such a degree since Robocop. It's got a shower scene that's almost as hard to forget as the one in Porky's. It's campy, dumb, and cool all at once. If you're into that kinda thing it's... Pretty good!

For the most part it achieves its satirical goals with huge unforgiving battle scenes and over the top scenes of a totalitarian future. It's a shame the acting is mediocre, though, because it removes any chance for the subtlety necessary for truly great satires.

The satire is less sharp than Robocop, but Starship Troopers packs a mean punch, even after all these years. It's the most subversive blockbuster ever made: a conscious parody of the action genre and its fascistic leanings that manipulates you into siding with the fascists. However, the film functions best as an over-the-top, ultra violent adrenaline pumping genre flick rather than a legitimate socio-political critique, but that's a given to all but the most hardcore of Verhoeven fans.

For anyone with a brain, the satire is loud and clear, and frequently hilarious. But it's also an action blockbuster, with a lot of amusingly over-the-top dismemberments and explosions. I think Verhoeven is more successful when he aims for satire than when he goes for visceral thrills, but it's entertaining enough. I've always had a problem with the look of Verhoeven's films, though. Everything is so clean and oddly overlit, as if the action takes place in a universe without shadows.

This movie is surprisingly much more complex than you would expect. I've read the Heinlein book and hated it, because frankly, it *is* Fascist. But the film... is it a very clever satire of the book or is it just an extremely dumb adaptation? I'm inclined to vote for the first option. Nevertheless, the sfx and cinematography are outstanding and the flamewars between fans and haters are still fun to read.

A wickedly, gleefully overblown B-movie of epic proportions, and interestingly, the element of satire works better in today's political atmosphere than it did a decade ago. Verhoeven's best work!! The effects are quite good for a film made in the 90s, they make fictional alien bugs really come to life. It's a propaganda video where Spanish-named characters are depicted as clean-cut, good-looking American heroes who YOU will be able to shower naked with if you JOIN THE FEDERATION. It cleverly conceals the reason behind the war with the bugs, and the violence to both sides is intentionally similar, as lives (and limbs) are wantonly lost. But I feel like it spent too much time in B-movie territory; it could have been a much sharper satire. Instead, it's become misunderstood and polarizing.

When Verhoeven is on point, which is like barely ever, but still, there are few directors that seem to have as much fun lampooning those in power or who have authority. Eerily precinct considering the real world events that would transpire four years later. And I'll say this...he somehow had me feel a twinge of sympathy for a disgusting space bug that minutes prior had drilled a hole in one of the hero's heads and vacuumed out his brain.
