Equally disturbing, hilarious and mesmerizing. "Super" plays with comic book conventions a la "Kick-Ass" - but goes that extra mile. Or rather: Those five extra miles. Working with ambiguous vigilante moments (Crimson Bolt almost kills a man with a wrench for cutting in line) and characters who are more interested in how they are perceived rather than in how they actually morally act (Page's Boltie in particular), "Super" blurs the line between comedy and psychological drama. SHUT UP, CRIME!

The whole regular guy turned superhero is possibly the most beaten to death premise in Hollywood right now. Can't believe I'm saying this but Ellen Page was the best part of this movie. The ending doesn't match the tone of the rest of the film and feels out of place. It's pretty dark and sometimes funny but Rainn Wilson cannot carry a film. You are Dwight Schrute, you will always be Dwight Schrute, stop trying to do other things cause it ain't working buddy.

There's more to Super than what is immediately apparent, and if you don't understand that, you definitely won't fully enjoy it. The seamless blend of psychological drama and superhero conventions taken to the extreme works brilliantly, particularly leading up to and including the exhilarating, hard-hitting and thought-provoking end - which simultaneously makes your heart race with excitement and your hairs stand up on your back in something resembling disgust. Bacon, Wilson and Page are stellar.

At times this was pretty crazy. One moment you're feeling sorry for this poor schmuck whose wife left him, the next you're laughing when he horribly wounds a (not really that) Bad Person, then you're feeling bad for laughing. A weird mix, but I like weird. And horny Ellen Page in a superhero outfit? So God wás listening to my prayers after all!

Page is bordering between funny and psychotically over-the-top. The problem is that most of the laughter will be of the nervous or "that's sick" kind. Gunn wants to make both 'Special' and 'Kick-Ass' as well as "pulling a 'Taxi Driver'", succeeding insofar that we're disgusted with his protagonists. The trouble is that he believes he can get away with lightheartedly switching between comedy, psychological drama and exploitation. Tonally, it doesn't work. He should've picked one over the other.

Wilson and Page play a pair of downtrodden losers who decide to become costumed crimefighters. While it's funny watching Wilson say "Shut up, crime" and bash someone in the chops with a pipe wrench, as the film progresses it becomes clear that both of them are desperate psychopaths. It gets less funny, then kinda heartbreaking. A good movie and probably the closest to what would happen to a real costumed vigilante, but it could have been great if it had ended when the screen faded to red.

I forgot to rate this film (I must have seen it in 2012 or 2013), and because I told myself a few years ago that I would write a review for every film I have watched, I must put SOMETHING here. This is how you review a film you saw years ago: I like things about this film, but unfortunately, I can't get any more specific. Remember when this other thing happened? Yeah, that thing was cool. However, this thing was not very good.

The gritty cheapness really separates this movie from the pack of 'real superhero' movies of the last few years. The violence was horrible and too realistic, which somehow made it really funny. It was nice to see slapstick fucked with like that. I liked Ellen Page too, which isn't something I've ever typed in my life. She was such a caustic little weirdo here, almost like a girl version of Tanner from Bad News Bears. Rainn Wilson also did a great job of bringing the pathetic. Loved it.

The kind of movie that doesn't as much make you wonder why no one has tried to be a superhero before as much as it makes you dread the day someone actually does it. Residing somewhere between Kick-Ass and Defendor this is way off the charts when it comes to inappropriateness. It even has Kevin Bacon.

The idea of Troma sensibilites being enacted by a near A-list cast probably shouldn't have worked as brilliantly as this does, but with a perfectly judged tone and enthusiastic performances by its good-sport cast (with Page given a rare opportunity to *really* let rip), this emerges as a total winner, though it's a shame Bacon feels somewhat hindered and restrained. Absurdly gory and trashy, but with an unexpected amount of heart; leads to a surprisingly touching and moving conclusion.

Don't know if I've actually seen more mixed reviews on a movie, and its pretty clear why that is. There is something off and disturbing about the humor and the film itself. While it did work for me, it was close to breaking that and being terrible. While I've seen many people characterize it as shallow, I do have to say that the brutality of the ending, especially with our beloved Bolty, makes us question the humor in the violence and pipe-wrenching of peoples faces. Just a weird but ok film.

I enjoyed Kick-Ass more than this. I don't know, it sometimes worked for me and other times it didn't. The dark comedy didn't really succeed, but when it stopped and showed how disturbing the violence of a superhero could be, then it worked. Always like Ellen Page (and not just because I'm from NS ;)), but this movie went from an 80, to a 40, back to an 80, and I'm settling on 65 because it mostly is a good movie.

Its so light and stupid and then it gets dark, really dark. it fits all my dreams for how a movie about real world superheroes should be. flaws and all. the fact that this movie got made just astonishes me, you'd figure somewhere along the way it wouldve got tied up and changed for the worse, but it was as good as it could be.

Watchmens 'heroes as right-wing psycho-rapists' and a Kick-Ass like fun underdog story mashed up. Doesn't quite work as the violence is inconsistent with cringe-inducingly real (wrench attacks) and cartoony (pipe bombs). Wilsons ability to take far more punishment than the gangsters is never explained beyond being brain-fingered. Cool idea that didn't quite work out, especially that ending.

The anti "Kick-Ass." A gloomy, disturbing account of a collection of sad losers, headed up by a main character who is and remains pitifully sick--deranged, even--and isn't redeemed by the costume like Kick-Ass was. The action here isn't cathartic but joltingly, unpleasantly violent--real-world grimness the likes of which we aren't used to seeing in movies about purported costumed crimefighters. Well made and not uninteresting, but ultimately pretty despairing and painful to sit through.

How you will think of this movie depends on entirely how you understand the ending. If you think that what Frank tells is real than this movie will probably suck for you, but on the other hand when you see the epilogue as Franks delusion than Super becomes something else. Super is subtle in letting you now that Franks ending is anything but happy. it's a movie with a white rabbit where the rabbit is not white on the screen :)

I generally love dark comedies, but this just didn't do it for me. A successful dark comedy requires better control of the tone, which was sorely lacking here (e.g., American Psycho, or even Very Bad Things). Instead, the tone is all over the place, going for outright comedy at times and serious drama at others. Plus it just wasn't all that funny.

I think I'd like this a lot more if Observe & Report didn't render it entirely irrelevant. (See that movie for an example of how the juxtaposition of brutality and farce can produce sharp satire and not simply frustrating tonal unevenness.) Still, one has to give to give credit to Ellen Page, who enlivens the movie as the gleefully psychopathic, fetishistic, and altogether inappropriate Boltie and provides the only real moments of surprise and -- most shockingly of all -- pathos.

Top badass moment? As far as I'm concerned, anything the Crimson Bolt did. All that moralising that Batman goes though whenever he does something wrong is for pussies. When you're fighting crime (and a superhero) right is always on your side, so you're always badass. 0 cats and 0 decapitations. This is a movie that makes you laugh at realistic violence and then tries to examine what's so appealing about it. Wilson does a great job playing an unstable man that's goofy at first but becomes increasingly off putting. He manages to be the good guy, but a good guy with profound psychosis that makes us question exactly what a good guy is. Cartoony characters that suffer real consequences. Overall, watch if you're willing to examine it and can stomach some jarring moments and harsh violence.

What a waste of a cast. Disturbing and depressing and not in a good way. This film has no idea what it is and as a result the mood whiplash will cut you in half. If this is an examination of the psyche of real life super-heroes, then stick to it. Lalala title sequences should not segway into a guy distraught over his wife. Also, 40 minutes to put the suit on? It's very hard not to compare this to Kick-Ass (2010), with its similar plot of an ordinary guy deciding to become a superhero. I think this one is different enough, but I'll say straight out that it's not as good. It has a bunch of cool actors. I loved the cameo from Nathan Fillion especially. It was quite violent and gory sometimes and very similar to James Gunn's previous film, Slither (2006). Pretty funny at times, I found it to be an entertaining movie.

Super is a movie that takes a long time to set itself up, but once it gets going, it's pretty fun. It makes a few errors in judgment along the way, and I can't say that it was actually all that enjoyable, but it's an interesting film even if it's not as offensive as it clearly wants to be. It starts out funny, and ends with a bunch of action scenes. The actors are all strong, and I liked its realistic take on the genre, but it also has a few dull moments and takes a while to get going.

This is a film that exists in moments. A few bits did get some real laughs out of me, and the idea of a loser bordering on sociopathic tendencies does make for interesting commentary on the genre. One of the first things I noticed about this movie was the music. The opening theme really grabbed me. The story of a guy who loses his wife to Kevin Bacon, a drug dealer, and then becomes a super hero in order to get her back is really endearing. But, the audience's empathy for main character quickly ends once you see how damaged the character is. Ellen Page plays an equally inept super hero. The over-the-top violence and asinine story pull together to make this a really wonderful movie.

Strange, inventive film with some interesting and engaging moments. A little problematic in different ways, but is at least smart enough to know about some of them. Its brief dramatic interludes are powerful, but the rest is off-kilter or excessive. A cast of this quality deserved a deeper exploration of their damaged and vulnerable characters. Not bad, but also a good yardstick for Gunn's rise to greatness as a director and creator. Guardians of the Galaxy (and Kick-Ass) are just more my vibe.

This is an odd and interesting film. We're clearly not meant to agree with the protagonist's interpretation of events, and none of the characters has any semblance of realism, nor does the plot make much literal sense, so we must interpret it as satire of some sort. (Perhaps a satire of American imperialism?) Page gives an interestingly manic performance.

Super is evil: It leads you down two very different paths at the same time. You may find yourself cheering on the protagonist as he dishes out merciless vigilante justice. Only to be disgusted or saddened seconds later when you realize the true cost of these actions. In essence, Super takes the idea of a superhero more serious than most straight superhero movies - in the guise of a comedy. A Deeper and more rewarding picture than you might expect. And quite funny...at times.

James Gunn's "Super" twists the superhero genre, yet the results are sadly underwhelming. It consistently fails to become funny, the direction is uninteresting (a few months earlier, Matthew Vaughn and Edgar Wright had given us "Kick-Ass" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" respectively), the script is mostly bland, and the juxtaposition of moods just feels awkward. Despite its fresh perspective and a good level of entertainment, this film did fall into the trap of not having much depth or message. Unlike Kick-Ass, which fucks with its own "normal guy as superhero" concept by going insane and off the rails, Super descends into sociopathic nihilism. Ellen Page does an excellent job at playing an absolutely horrible character, while Kevin Bacon's character and performance are probably the highlight. The more the movie goes on the more you realise it hasn't earned its dark moments one bit and feels like it was written by a teenager trying to be edgy. Which is the same as Kick-Ass, really.

Out of the five recent "superhero with no powers" movies, "Super" is probably my favorite. The comparisons to "Kick Ass" are inevitable but unjustified, "Super" has enough original elements to be remembered as its own (and superior) film. The characters, despite the things they do, are more relatable and charismatic and Kevin Bacon is a much better villain. Very weird movie. Mainstream superhero movies are extremely popular these days. The problem is that making an "original" unconventional, non-mainstream superhero movie is not as original as it sounds. Kickass was a bigger studio release, but there's also Special with Michael Rapaport & Defendor with Woody Harrelson. So, where does that leave Super? Interesting enough. Violent. Trippy. Sometimes funny. Overall inconsistent.

Very enjoyable and dark - the kind of film Kick Ass could/should have been. Rainn Wilson does very well at giving his character just enough sympathy to make you invested in the story but manages not to hide his (many) negative qualities. The film is well paced and the laughs are often just as disturbing as they are funny. A good supporting cast too. Maybe a bit too grim for some, but it's a fitting takedown of the superhero genre without sacrificing character development.

Gunn pitches Super as a morally ambiguous, hyper-realistic tale of justice and revenge, and it just didn't work for me. It tries to work as a nerd's wet dream about comic boom dreams -- it ends with Wilson alone, looking at drawings he made about the movie we've just seen. While Gunn is always good when it comes to ultraviolence and gore material, the humor rarely clicks -- the Christian superhero TV show is aces, though, but Page's character, for example, is so badly written. I love Wilson on The Office but I would love to see a Super with Will Ferrell directed by Edgar Wright.

There's a lot to like and a lot to hate here. Likely would have worked better as a short.

Unlike Kick-Ass, which was more comic-like but flat and unentertaining, Super looked and felt more like an indie comedy although it was based on the same comic book idea. It edged on noir during some of its more violent moments, adding to the emotional range. On the whole, not great but entertaining. It has its moments and a few laughs, which owe to decent writing and good comedic timing by the cast. (Including Ellen Page. I like her when she's over-the-top like she is in this.)

"Super" is a movie that went under everyone's radar. In an era of superhero movies James Gunn gives us a story about a dweeb who decides to fight evil, armed only with a makeshift red suit, a few hallucinations, and a red monkey wrench. His moral ambiguity would normally be the subject of a superhero movie but in this they just run with it. Rainn Wilson and Elliot Page are very funny and likable in their roles. "Quirky" seems to be used a lot these days for movies, but I feel it suits this film.

It's a mental little movie! Certainly as a concept "Super" is nothing new. It does however have just about enough individuality in its style and delivery to define itself from the current glut of superhero movies, and more specifically the 'normal guy turns crime fighter' movies. I thought the soundtrack was really effective, Page was great also, and there were several good scenes, but overall "Super" is missing something. There is a distinct lack of depth and the ending is oddly off tone.

Started off kinda funny but it died fast. Ellen Page became unbearable, Rainn Wilson got significantly less funny, and the comedy shifted from uncomfortable situations to unexpected murder and rapes with no jokes, no amusing scenarios, the graphic content was supposed to be all the humor.

Tries to be a more extreme version of Kick-Ass, and in doing so loses all the fun, intelligence and humour of that movie. The protagonists are unlikeable one-trick nobodies. Ellen Page is relatively good, but only because she's surrounded by such mediocrity. Even Kevin Bacon's villain is limp and non-threatening. A few moments raised a smile but generally every attempt at humour fell so flat that I was starting to feel embarrassed for those involved.
