This is where I mention that "It's no Battle Royale" and then all the beautiful women in the world flock to me because I have shown them how cool and smart I am by having seen/read a more obscure movie/book that this borrowed heavily from. I will await these women in my bedding chambers.

Starts off reasonably well and the buildup to the titular games was at the least interesting, but when things get underway you realize it's just going to be teen drama in the woods for an hour, interrupted by silly plot contrivances to reach a conclusion that's obvious from the very start. On top of that, there's no tension, the Games are pretty stupid (instant fireballs and CGI dogs!) and they really should've hired a cameraman with more than one leg.

Lacks the guts of its influences, suffers from 'shaky-cam syndrome' and the visual limits of PG-13, but it does succeed in establishing a Dystopian atmosphere suitable for teen audiences that are new to action films with political plots. Strengths lie in the casting of Lawrence and Harrelson and many supporting characters who display unique personalities. Sadly, important arena scenes would benefit from sharper editing and darker, grittier presentation to truly convey the horror of the games.

Not the most original idea or narrative, it still never feels like less than a future classic. This is mostly b/c not 1 second of it is forced: there's no ADD-rush towards action, focusing on developing character instead; no predictable romantic blueprint adhered 2 or attempts at humor 2 lighten the mood. Indeed, this may be the most relentlessly serious action blockbuster ever. Why? B/c it's exactly what the story calls for. Who'd imagine a H'wood studio would ever do such a thing?

A perfect example of how studio interference undermines creative freedom. Addressing the timely questions of its introspective premise is something THG cares little about. Instead, it wallows in faux teen angst while dishing out jittery shaky cam "are you kidding me, that's it ?!" PG-13 violence that inevitably weigh down the depth it attempts to flaunt. Knowing this translates to box-office gold isn't as shocking as it singlehandedly reflects the attitudes and upheld values of today's society.

Ross was an inspired choice to adapt these novels into films. He fully understands the book's major theme: that both the entertainment industry & politicians exploit children as disposable props for their myopic purposes. It's fun as hell too, with great action scenes (the cornucopia bloodbath), trippy music, and some quiet drama. I just wish the casting had been a bit more multicultural to really drive home the political context. Still, this film began the most relevant franchise of the 2010's.

This movie is like (and made for) a teenage kid; Angsty, jittery, and immature with too much wasted potential. They could have really done this right, and perhaps someday someone will. Unfortunately not before we have to endure patiently through two more from this go round. My advice? Fire this entire crew, especially the cinematographer who clearly has a bad case of Parkinson's. Start fresh and go for that hard R. I don't want pretty faces. I want to be mentally scarred.

I think the adaptation suffers a bit from the loss of Katniss' narrative, its inability to portray graphic violence, and its occasional abuse of shaky cam, which oddly enough mostly occurred in actionless introductory scenes. However, this is shockingly enjoyable compared to other recent adaptations of young adult series (see: Twilight, et al) thanks in part to performances Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, and Stanley Tucci. It's not truly great or original, but it is solidly entertaining.

Walking into a cinema filled with noisy teen girls about to see the proclaimed successor to Twilight, my initial tolerance and expectations were admittedly pretty low - but this changed quickly. One half Battle Royal, one half flamboyantly Running Man-esque; this dystopian and surprisingly violent tale restored my hope in teen oriented films, even if it was 45 minutes to long.

So the film-makers had a meeting and asked "How can get we get a mainstream audience to sit and watch all the sick violence in the second half?" The answer was "Let's make the first half one of the best films the audience has seen this year." And so they did. I didn't realise that was something you can just choose to do, but apparently you can if you want to. A dystopian sci-fi that crackles with smartness and relevance. Loved it.

The Hunger Games is sold as a film that is more than your average cheap entertainment -- some piece of 1984's inspired dystopia for today's gamers and the Twilight generation --, but the product itself is actually just about being entertained by a shaky camera picturing a reality show teen slaughter -- obviously, in the limits of the PG-13 rating. Everything is dull, except Jen Lawrence, rawly beautiful, but still fragile.

Maybe some are being a little hyper-critical of this movie, but any film with big pre-release hype always gets a tough ride. On the downside; it peaks a little early, more exploration of the dystopian society itself would have been good & a tad more grit & guts would've been welcome! But overall this film works so well. Tucci's beautifully judged performance is epic & Lawrence anchors this movie brilliantly. As cinematic mass-appeal media goes this is excellent. Look forward to a directors cut.

I really liked this adaptation. And this is coming from someone who found the book poorly written, heavy-handed, and unconvincing. The film has an impressively ominous and more believable atmosphere filled with tense silence and unspoken anxieties. It also helps that Lawrence fully inhabits the role with quiet expressiveness which makes us root for her. Of course, Ross doesn't really elevate the story into sci-fi/dystopian greatness. But I think the source material is more to blame for that.

I hated the living hell out of this 'Battle Royale 2'. It was like watching 'Starship Troopers 2' all over again. Seems the makers just don't get that this setting can only work as satire. Then a friend of mine applauded it for introducing 'Battle Royale' to tween girls. His point is valid, but I wouldn't have blinked before I had shown any would-be child of mine 'Battle Royale'. Then I felt like a bad imaginary parent. Now I hate the living hell out of him as well.

I've never read the books, was slightly (to put it mildly) annoyed by the hype having read what it borrowed from, and saw it as a favor to my fiance. To be honest, the movie wasn't terrible and I really liked Lawrence and Harrelson, but in the end it was just thoroughly mediocre. The camera work in the first half hour or so is unbearable, there's no personality outside of the main characters, some forced romance, and violence that's honestly not violent enough. Cool concept, not a lot else.

In a world where the ugly people are beautiful and the beautiful are sparking, soap-opera grade teen love triangles give way to deus ex machina-driven happy ends--but not so happy as to prevent endless sequels in which Three's Company-esque situational conflict melts the hearts of a whole new Twilight generation. Excellent acting for those who believe excellence is proportional to the number of times an actor makes a brooding face. Sci-fi dumbed down for those who can't be bothered with science.

For a film whose central premise is the competitive murder of children by other children, this was notably devoid of tension, grit or horror. I guess the sanitisation was necessary for a youth-friendly rating. It hits a few emotional beats pretty well, and is driven by a fine performance from Lawrence. Pretty solid overall, even though I think many of the central themes have been dealt with more effectively in other work. Perhaps needs some Jesse Ventura. I'll probably see the sequel.

The Hunger Games is a very exciting, emotionally involving film that will please both the people who are already fans, and those who are experiencing the series for the first time. While the action scenes are obscured to appease the PG-13 rating, they are still generally thrilling, and because you get to spend so much time with these characters before their lives are put on the line, you care about them. It's a long movie, but it's definitely worth the time spent with it.

Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci and Jennifer Lawrence are cool. That one kid from the Bridge to Terabithia adaptation was alright I guess. The shaky cam is terrible and most of what this movie is trying to say has already been said better by other writers and filmmakers. Not to mention the bloodlust is why half of us went and saw this movie, right? C'mon, don't lie to yourself. The movie sells itself on thrilling entertainment so the irony was definitely not lost on me.

Ach, even the pretty-faced, pretty-bodied and admittedly pretty-well-playing Jenniffer Lawrence couldn't save this from being more than just a sniff better than the forgettable bunch of 'highschool love in a new setting'-movies that we're apparently never getting rid off. There were collective sighs and restless snickers in film audiences worldwide at the antics of Glee club survivalists. Feels like they toned the violence down in order to force feed us an unbelievable romance. The first third had a great build up in a twisted authoritarian sci-fi world. The look of this felt like a throwback to 60-70's sci-fi with its post modern interiors and gaudy hairdos which was interesting. The conceptualization of the "hunger games" itself is poorly done sci-fi though.

Why the hell was this not made as an R-rated film? It's evident in every frame and piece of dialog that it should have been, and I know the commercial answer to that question, but until I get a satisfying artistic answer, I remain entirely unimpressed. Yet another entry in a new form of young adult narratives that follow an almost Choose Your Own Adventure formula. The character is a true blank slate, relying on the target audience's fantasy of being Katniss to fill in the blanks-- and there are a lot of blanks. The film does not pause to consider anything she does, no matter how vile. With an absurd Baby's First Repressive State backdrop and a complete non-ending, its a complete non-starter.

Captivating from the get-go thanks to the intimate, hand-held camerawork, bittersweet landscapes of poverty and natural beauty, and ethereal, haunting soundtrack. As the last two acts dive into the deep end of the disturbing dystopia while keeping these elements it becomes even more so; social commentary on class disparity, reality entertainment, and desensitization to violence intertwine to make numerous powerful scenes and a poignant lingering sense of despair and rebellion amidst victory.

This might actually be better than the book since the bad writing doesn't come across so much. Still it suffers from many of the same flaws as the book; the awkward romance side plot and the way they handle the killing of the characters. They act so nonchalant about it, like it's not actually happening. This makes the movie feel less real and not scary at all. Good attempt, though. I didn't completely hate it.

The film has little going for it aside from the reversal of gender roles in the two leads. It amounts to Battle Royale with more protracted scenes, more predictability, more cheating the protagonist(s) out of danger, worse dialog, none of the interesting plot threads or ethical situations, more impotent rage at a system it doesn't significantly challenge, and worst of all, more of a feeling that this film uses a weak totalitarian metaphor as an excuse for us to watch children kill children.

Improves upon the book in several ways, like toning down some of the more overdone romantic elements, adding more perspectives to open up the world a bit, and mostly just being more mature. Certain pieces of character development seem to be missing, but the actors are all spot on and charismatic enough to excuse it. I love the 60's sci-fi design of the Capitol, and how gritty everything else is. The violence carried the perfect amount of emotional weight. Also, I could have used less shaky cam.

I cannot decide on this one - I think the story's just too video-gameish to classify it as most Sci-Fis; nonetheless, up to the middle the movie was (eventhough it's a typical teen movie) unbelievably enjoyable. Sadly, they overdo the teenage thing with the stupid romance, and it just stops being fun in a couple of minutes. I also hated the overuse of the shaky camera which seems to be so popular nowadays. This is probably the most vapid "battle Royale-eque" thing I've ever watch. The society and rules make no sense, the social commentary is toddler tier non-sense, the action is shit and they do a piss poor job of making a believable cast with real economic divides. It's a beginner's guide to dystopianism that I understand has to be limited for its audience, but the world of the Hunger Games trilogy has real potential to be very, very gritty and harsh. I didn't expect that degree of shaky-cam style; I guess I was expecting more polish from a blockbuster. If you're willing to invest yourself in the idea of this world, it will likely work for you; if not, you may just think it's dumb and move on. Some pacing issues, but good characters. Despite the annoying shaky camerawork, the blandness of the filming and production, and some clunkiness that at times comes across as directorial incompetence, this is still a little better and more interesting than other teen-oriented movies of this ilk, perhaps because it possesses the advantages of being about something and having characters who are blank slates rather than insufferable adolescent types. In better hands, and given freer rein, may have been a strongish narrative and critique.

Disappointing going into it after the highly positive reviews. There's a lot of exciting moments and Jennifer Lawrence is generally excellent (as she was in Winter's Bone), but the course of narrative seems to bend over backwards to avoid tackling some of the morally trickier material it brings up, and everyone outside of Katniss and Peeta receives very one-dimensional characterization.

Top badass moment? At a key moment, Katness gives 2 fingers to the watching millions; (actually 3 but anyway). A defiant gesture that starts her journey from 'average teen' to rebel hero. There's no way on Earth that's not badass. Sticking it to 'The Man' always is. 1 cat, no chainsaws or decapitations. A great bit of cat hissing gets the action underway shortly after the start. Sadly this isn't utilised further and we just get a couple of hours of reality TV nonsense instead.

This movie is destined to disappoint due to the massive amounts of buzz around it. It is a perfectly acceptable movie. Entertaining with a lot of great character acting. However, I feel it would have benefited from an R rating and not having to beat around the bush with some of the violence.

Not a waste of money, but still a bit disappointed and very mixed feeling on this one. The acting performances of both main (Jennifer) and supportcast were good. I wanted to be more on the edge of my seat wich happend a few times, but not enough. Some scene's stand out, but most of them are just mediocre. I don't mind the usage of a shaky cam once in a while but don't overdo it. However, the movie made me wanna see and read more about there characters and plot so in the end it did his job!

A half-step above my Hollywood average of 70, but still just not good enough to call excellent. My biggest gripe was having the "contestants" paired up m/f by district, some then also forming alliances, but knowing that only one would survive. That bugs me no end, but I still recommend the movie. Go figure. I thought Jennifer Lawrence was the biggest plus.

I was really surprised that i liked the movie. The characters were diverse enough and likeable. The story was cheesy at moments, but it was to be expected due to the next part coming out soon. It was still well thought out and made sense. There were some forced "sad" moments that disapointed.

I'd seen some other movies based on dystopian teen sci-fic and was disappointed, but this was the first of its genre in recent years. Well-written, well-acted, and really gripping stuff.

Excellent teen rebel drama. Jennifer Lawrence is a most convincing actress--she does not seem to be acting.

A really enjoyable film with great choice of cast and good acting. My only real complaint is that the amount of time they spent in the arena seemed rather short and not so much of a struggle to survive compared to the book.

This is bad. I have no idead if there realy was any action sequences in this movie because of the shaky cam. Seriously, who invented that shit? It already ruined every Matt Damon Action movie and now this. On top of that, the writing is really weak. There is a scene were the whole cinema had to loudly exhale like "Really? That s what you re offering?"

The movie brings two of my favorite young actors in Hollywood: Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. I'd have loved to see him as Spider-Man and I'd love to see her as Catwoman in five or seven years. Well, dreaming is wonderful, isn't it?

For a dystopian movie that wanted to stay teen-ish, this was really really solid. They could have covered the topics it tries to address a little more and the actual Hunger Games wasn't as brutal as it should have been, and yes it ends up being very Hollywood and I hope it doesn't end up being Twilight-ish... but you know, I was into this a lot. Maybe it's because I'm a sucker for Dystopias and Lawrence, but the movie was kind of gritty and entertaining. Camera work was annoying at times though.

A pleasant surprise. It's a shame that the movie white-washed the cast and removed the racial element of the story that was present in the books, but what's left is certainly an above-average sci-fi film, with a suspenseful action-thriller in the foreground and an intriguing fascist dystopic world in the background.

Very engaging and Jennifer Lawrence is a great lead. A lot of people have criticised the bizarre costumes of the city folk but I think its a great way of exaggerating how perverse and detached this society has become. One small criticism is that it never fully commits to the TV show - once or twice you get a cut away to Tucci and Jones commentary but then its dropped, likewise the District 11 sequence, the film seemed to forget them. Either show them often or not at all.

I just don't care about the plot or the characters as much as the movie wants me to.

Excellent, excellent movie. It has been a long time since I have almost wanted to stand up and cheer for a character in a film. This movie made me want to do that. This movie made me laugh, cry, cringe and kept my rapt attention through most of the film. I have not read the books but I really want to now. Just a great, epic film. Jennifer Lawrence is definitely one of my new favorite actors. She is not only beautiful but fierce in The Hunger Games. See this movie. I love it!

If you read the book before you watch it, you will likely rate it lower. I really enjoyed it because I knew nothing about it going in.

It's basically "1984 meets Battle Royale with some V for Vendetta added to the mix", the world it creates is nothing new and even absurd at times. Why is this so popular? I get the success of well-made publicity and the desire for some people to be cult followers of such series etc. But I don't see how this became such a phenomenon. Anyway, the shaky camera isn't that shaky.

I hope you didn't actually want to see the Hunger Games, because you have to wait about an hour. We're also expected to believe Woody Harrelson can offer support to anyone.

I didn't read the books, but this film is better than 90% of the sci-fi films that come out of Hollywood. I disagree that an R rating automatically would have made this better. The message of media and politics being intertwined is strongly portrayed and the pacing is taut and exciting; bloodier action scenes wouldn't have added to this.

I would've rated this even higher if all that wonderful setup through the first 60+ min didn't lead up to a rather anti-climactic Battle Royale (get it?) that seemed like a setup for part 2 of the trilogy with a meta feeling "forced love story" (when we all know huntresses are chaste!). Jennifer Lawrence can do no wrong. Her emotions are contagious and everything that's great about this is attributable to her performance as Artemis...er...Katniss. Also, Donald Sutherland is always fun.
