Cody sharply grasps that the female version of the ubiquitous man-child has great potential for tragedy and dark comedy. Mavis is an unforgettable speciment of a delusional teen in a woman's body whom you cannot help but at the same time hate and feel sorry for. Theron, in an impressive performance, makes sure to elicit the required empathy and disgust and Reitman keeps satire and credibility balanced. Cudos to him for turning out four very good films in a row; few directors are that dependable.

Wasn't aware how delightfully dark this would be before I watched it. After not much liking Cody's previous screenplays, this is a definite step in the right direction. Theron and Oswalt play off each other with ease, both providing excellent performances. Found it sinister, charming and uncomfortable in the best way possible.

Caught this randomly on late-night telly, and found myself quite happy to sit through it. Few people seemed to be particularly likeable in it, but the performances were strong enough to make the characters work, and it has enough humour, satire and heart to hold the attention. Could be worth a look if you're in the mood.

The girl (Charlize Theron) exemplifies the term "Pretty girl syndrome". A gorgeous girl who is used to getting her way, but finds one day that her life is empty. Failing to appreciate what she has, wallows in the past and fixates on an old flame. Good example of how messed up your life can get when you are living in the past. The people she encounters are nearly oblivious to her internal suffering. I loved Patton Oswalt's character who always seemed to say just the right thing.
03 Sep 2012
Once again Jason Reitman approaches modern American culture with curiosity and respect. As in Juno and Up in the Air, the question of a worthwhile existence is reflected against varying ways of life, unabashedly exploring their imperfections, but also concluding, once again, that one's perspective is a lot more important than one's situation. Theron plays a brutally tragic character, assured of her own superiority while trying to block out her inadequacies. Good flick.

It's like a dark and lonely version of Sex And The City. She writes books, she's a bitch, she complains about herself and men, she is a consumerist, she tries to get men and make relationships work and then ruins them for herself. Patton Oswalt is really the only good thing about this, I feel sorry for him. Charlize Theron on the other hand is a dumb bitch, and I think we are supposed to actually care about her. She tries to ruin a marriage, and she's just generally annoying, fucking things up.
01 Mar 2012
Mavis is the tragic character for a new generation, and Young Adult is the latest, greatest dark character study. Whether she's chugging Diet Coke, watching the self-obsessed Kardashians every second of downtime she gets or sucking down her ex-boyfriend's beer of choice in high school while scheming to rip him from his wife and child, you can't take your eyes off Charlize Theron who kills every scene she's in.
04 Jan 2012
This makes "Juno" look like a cartoon. This is the second time Reitman and Cody have worked together now, and I much prefer this film. I'm probably in the minority with that opinion, but I found this to be a more realistic and humanistic story. While "Juno" is hilarious and does have its fair share of emotion, it still comes across as a bit full of itself whereas "Young Adult" is more subtle, dark, and real.
04 Jan 2012
I was expecting something much more funny. It’s really a dramedy. Still, pretty solid writing and memorable characters with some honestly great acting. Rietman is a rest director and Cody is a solid writer as well. I’ll have to revisit it now that I know what kind of film it is, but still good overall.
01 Jan 2013
Painfully, cover-your-eyes awkward and brutally unflinching in portraying Mavis as a pathetic has-been trying to recapture her high school glory days. If this doesn't convince people of Cody's obvious writing talent, nothing will. It's equal measures funny and sad and occasionally horrifying.
03 Dec 2012
The way a character study should be. Led by Theron's great performance, flaws and insecurities are laid bare with no attempt to elicit sympathy nor excuse them. Perhaps the film is a little narrow in scope and the ending a little too clean but it has great moments, a unique perspective and some good laughs.
17 Aug 2012
Theron's character here is Archie Bunker reborn as a Maxim cover girl, or Cartman with a sex change. It's something remarkable, despite, or in spite of, Cody's self-appreciating field loop (i.e. dialogue). This succeeds because the ending is one of the bravest and best audience Fuck Yous I've seen in quite a while, and I loved it.
09 May 2012
Falls victim to repetition by showing Theron acting drunk and slobbery (while still looking insanely hot!), trying to ruin her ex's marriage and getting slapped some sense into by a wonderfully cast Oswalt. The ever lurking possibility of transition drew a constant interest but the sour note it eventually ends on struck me as insulting and self-centered. Yeah Cody, the past has set, you're an Oscar winning writer now, hold your head up high and fuck everyone else.
22 Mar 2012
A brave and thorough character study that serves well as a metaphor for today's widespread fear of embracing adult responsibilities and suburbia. Still, the plot isn't as fascinating as Theron's performance deserves and I have a feeling the movie in general won't linger in my mind.
16 Mar 2012
This is probably Reitman's best film. Same goes for Diablo Cody. I've felt for a while now that...well, 65 years after The Long Weekend, there has been a general failure to address alcoholism in film. This is a problem, and it has always bothered me. Young Adult nails it though, which puts it in rarefied company.
02 Mar 2012
Jason Reitman's fourth great film is a darkly comic movie that turns serious at the end. Has a great script by Diablo Cody (better than her oscar winning screenplay Juno imho) and Charlize Theron with some of her best acting to date. Also great is Patton Oswalt, giving a funny and charming performance. Jason Reitman is four for four.
03 Jan 2012
I thought both Juno and Up in the Air were a little overrated (not bad, just overrated), so I'm surprised to find this Reitman/Cody joint to be not just my favorite of Reitman's last three films but one of my favorites of the year. It achieves a pitch-perfect darkly comic vibe and Theron is really superb. This may seem like an odd compliment, but the film also does an eerily good job capturing the vibe of that town you went to high school in. The feel is so familiar.
30 Dec 2011
I liked Juno and definitely like this better. Cody drops the ball here and there - I didn't buy the bookstore scene, for instance - but in general, boy, can she write. The anti-heroine of Young Adult is a beautifully conceived tragicomic character, and the text absolutely shines in the last several sequences, where, at the drop of a hat, she goes from narcissistic bitch to heart-rendingly relatable loser and back again. This movie is Charlize Theron's finest hour. Funny, moving and real.
05 Dec 2015
This girl is sinister and deluded, but I can't help but feel sorry for her. She misses her tiny Minnesota town, yet she pities the people who stuck behind when she moved on to the big city. As adult as she may appear, in her tiny universe, she is caught in her formative years--caught there, and drowning in the drama she's creating. This is a difficult movie to watch, but one that reveals much about hubris and the values with which we lead our big-shot lives.
18 Nov 2014
I get that it bucks convention in its lack of story arc. But doing something differently than everyone else is not the same as doing something well, or something worth doing. While Mavis' final slight of Matt's sister is cleverly done, the hatefulness of the move and the resulting cynicism of the film make the final product a slight evocation of a horrible person. Okay, I get that those kinds of people are around. Now what?
31 Aug 2013
It's great fun to witness Theron's character unravel until the average woman we saw at the outset has become a psycho. Patton Oswalt turns in another great role; no one has done more to make fictional nerds more realistic, which is more than real-life nerds deserve, honestly.
25 Apr 2013
Young Adult is a mess of a movie that ultimately works because it has a few moments of humor, and a very strong cast. It works, for the most part, as a character study, but when it tries to make us care about the lead, it fails. It portrays her as unlikable for that majority of the time and then tries to turn it around way too late at the end. It's kind of fun, kind of sweet, and only kind of worth your time.
03 Mar 2013
There's no comedy in here and while I thought the concept had some promise to it all it managed to get out of me was a cringe here and there from Theron doing horribly regretful things while drunk. I will say that I would have never seen Oswalt in a role like this and he wasn't half bad.
20 Jan 2013
Honest and poignant. It makes an art out of feeling uncomfortable -- I would characterize the default tone of the film as "unsettling". Theron is great at making it work, and Oswalt and Wilson are a great joy to watch. It's unmistakably a Jason Reitman film, which isn't totally a good thing -- it often feels plain and cold, even with the intimate character material. The ending is inspired, and the film sits well in memory, so it's probably worth a bit more than the sum of its parts.
05 Dec 2012
Brilliant script by Diablo Cody. Charlize Theron She delivers a solid performance as the neurotic hot mess Mavis Gary. It's actually a tragedy masqueraded as a comedy, a female-version of manchild, who does not love (whether it's romantic or familial) and who does not find redemption after her crucifiction. Young Adult is a anti-cliche anti-love anti-comedy, a breath of fresh air in this tired, repetitive, out-of-idea genre.
16 Apr 2012
That rare film in which everyone involved is at the top of their respective games, including extraordinarily well-observed writing, a great performance from Oswalt, and what is for me undoubtedly the best performance of Theron's career thus far and among my favorite performances in cinema. Also, I identify with Mavis more than I should admit. This is a funny and searingly realistic character study that strikes a wonderful balance between being deliciously misanthropic and deeply empathetic.
17 Mar 2012
Bit disappointed in this from Reitman, as I really loved Up In The Air. Theron and Oswalt are amazing, but Young Adult feels a bit incomplete as a piece. It's constantly interesting, but I'm not sure how memorable yet. I liked it, but it was a case of me wanting to, and probably expecting to, like it more.
05 Mar 2012
Young Adult first of all has a great, witty and smart script - like all the other Reitman/Diablo films. Sadly, it is wrapped into an indifferent story - just like Up in the Air. I think it's about time Reitman challenged himself and took on a new genre, because he's a talented director. The script and Theron is what saves it from being just another quircky comedy.
02 Mar 2012
Unusual 4 a H'wood film 2 feature a protagonist who spends most of the film actively insulting the average, decent folk around her & by proxy insulting the life choices made by most audience members themselves. If Theron's character weren't also made so pitiable, it's hard 2 imagine many people sitting through this. Her delusions make her compelling, but leaves the movie nowhere 2 go, except 2 march 2wards an ending whose only accomplishment is stubbornly refusing 2 give the audience an inch.
27 Dec 2011
Charlize Theron did a little bit too good of a job playing this despicable character. She really doesn't deserve redemption and the one saving grace of this movie is that she really doesn't get it. She doesn't get redemption and unfortunately also didn't garner any of my sympathy. I just think this movie in general was just a little too cold-hearted.
17 Aug 2016
Cody creates in Theron a character so realistic I feel like I've met her. She's pathetic, rude, self-delusional, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Theron's performance drives it all home. Equally as impressive is Oswalt, who's one of the most watchable character actors out there.
22 Nov 2015
Interesting ending. I guess the message is that we've got to reign in these deluded psychopathic egotists or else they'll run rampant and never stop. Beautiful people experience an altered form of reality, and there's nothing quite as humbling for a dollfaced prom queen than being cursed out and comfort fucked by a mangled garden gnome. Don't give in. Stay strong ugly folks and country hicks. *raises fist*
14 Mar 2015
I liked the character Charlize Theron played in the first 2/3 of the movie. It had good comic potential. However, I hate the way these modern character dramas always have to end up in a "climax of social awkwardness". These scenes make me cringe. And by following this template, the film fell far short of what it could have been. Still, it deserves some praise for its original and wry take on adulthood, nostalgia and love triangles. I would not bother watching again.
12 Oct 2014
My fave thus far of Jason Reitman's comedy-dramas. His warm, real and dryly funny handling Diablo Cody's naturalistic study of midlife crisis, failure, baggage and rejection is on par with Ricky Gervais' BBC work and other emerging great comedies of pain. Juno was fair, but Young Adult is Charlize Theron's best performance since Monster, though this character is much closer to home, and desperate in a much more familiar way than Aileen.
21 Aug 2014
A compelling and bleak character study of a woman who most may find unlikable but I consider fascinating and sympathetic (if deeply, deeply problematic). Cody puts out what is probably her finest script (not that there was an impressive competition), Theron is magnificent as the title character and Reitman's helming is subtle but sophisticated. These elements translate into an imperfect but powerful film, with a gutter-punch ending.
24 Sep 2013
I would never call this movie enjoyable to watch. It's uncomfortable at best, and painfully awkward in the worst parts. Charlize Theron is completely unlikeable throughout most of it, and there is no catharsis through her redemption at the end. I am not always a Diablo Cody fan, but I feel like she toned down the typical dialogue here and ended up with something pretty good, even if it's not enjoyable.
08 May 2013
A decent but typical indie that often treads very familiar ground, Young Adult owes a huge debt to Theron for making the lead character believable, intriguing and even somewhat likable despite her obvious flaws. The plot is such that you know something horrible is going to happen - it's just a matter of time - making the surprisingly positive conclusion a bit of a letdown. Patton Oswalt helps things along too.
12 Apr 2013
Charlize Theron ropes you in via her damaged Mavis Gary, the proto-hot-chick of yesteryear relegated to the first-and-last name treatment to anyone from the past that appears, with Patton Oswalt as the polar opposite working as the voice of reason. He may be speaking to a brick wall though, as Theron's true demons begin to show.
05 Jan 2013
Definitely the best collaboration between Reitman and Cody, Young Adult is an unconventional coming-of-age story. The protagonist, played masterfully by Theron, is delusional, immature, and, at times, disgusting, making for one of the most enjoyable performances in recent memory. The script isn't the strongest, but there are several moments of witty, dry genius. Ultimately, the best aspect of the film is certainly the relationship between Oswalt and Theron. That unlikely pair was hilarious.
09 Aug 2012
"Young Adult" is a stark character study, built around Theron's excellent performance. I like Oswalt too, so was glad to see him have a significant role. Some may ridiculously avoid this just because Cody's name is attached, but they will be missing out. This is dark, funny and well worth your time. The bittersweet ending is one to ponder on too.
08 Jul 2012
Young Adult is a lot of fun. Charlize Theron is really excellent in this... Patton Oswalt is even better than Theron.
I loved the writing in this movie. I think that Diablo Cody is really talented at making characters sound just normal. Even characters chatting in the background sound like they should in real life.
There are so many funny scenes and heartbreaking scenes in this film. The noteworthy one is at the baby-naming ceremony. Wow... awkward and yet wonderful. A very fun movie.
21 Jun 2012
While it's a mess story-wise, it pisses me off to constantly see Theron have to play the role of nutjobs because she's so pretty. That poor girl is hated for how beautiful she is. I loved her acting and oswalt's too even though it sounded like his comedy at points. Nice and dark, very poorly filmed
10 Jun 2012
I really loved many things here, from the 90s alt-rock spirit of being stuck in the past to the sense of pride (by Diablo) and sensibility (Reitman's touch) of the main character. This is basically the same kind of movie that Cameron Crowe (or Alex Payne) is used to do, but much better. Charlize shines.
03 Apr 2012
Theron is great, and the flick on the whole is very well-directed, with a no-holds-barred script that doesn't shy away from painful truths or unlikable protagonists. The dark comedy works very well, and Oswalt puts in a surprisingly excellent performance. I'm not too big on where the plot went, especially towards the end - what could have been a natural conclusion felt like it was reaching to make some vague point - but I was super interested most of the time.
26 Mar 2012
A Nelson-voiced 'ha-ha' look at the downfall of a popular girl from the eyes of a screenwriter who probably grew up openly despising popular girls while secretly wishing she could be just like them...but then ultimately feeling the urge to come back and rub it in after becoming just like them--completing the transformation. Ha-ha. But when boiled down to its core, Young Adult is simply another movie about how Diablo Cody likes hipper music than you ever will.
10 Mar 2012
yeah, yeah, we get it, Mrs. Cody, everyone in Mercury are fat and ugly and can go fuck themselves, i have become a famous writer after all, d'oh! i mean, what a pointless story, which exactly fits for a young adult book. Reitman? There was no Reitman existance in the movie, just Cody's ego.
07 Mar 2012
Fun movie, that gets a bit too cynical for my taste. Some more character development in Diablo Cody's scripts would be nice too. We got Bitch, we got Looser and Alfa Joe, and not much changes in these characters throughout the movie. These quirky dramedies are getting boring in general.
06 Mar 2012
Very interestingly dark, though predictable. I liked a lot Patton Oswalt and especially his sis Collette Wolfe (small part). You will hear from her one day! The first half of the story was pretty standing water and the latter part almost started the engine. But come on! I hate the voiceover. Even though it was linked nicely as a part of the story. Charlize Theron made again part nobody excepted.
04 Mar 2012
I was laughing my ass off pretty much from start to finish, and then for a few days afterward. To be honest this is probably the best dark comedy I've ever seen. It is so well written that it does not need to rely on violence, contrived (aka "snappy") dialogue, or a ridiculous/convoluted/convenient plot to be hilarious. And yet the film is simultaneously an astute character study. Charlize Theron deserves Best Actress for her performance.
03 Mar 2012
Definitely better than Juno but I think Up in the Air is still Reitman's best piece. This might be the most genuine work Reitman and Cody has ever done though. Charlize Theron is amazing as always. They make an odd but somehow great couple with Patton Oswalt. However, I thought there will be more laughs and dark homour. Honestly, this wasn't what I expected. It's quite depressing actually.
03 Mar 2012
I cringed when I saw Diablo Cody's name attached to it, but I'll be damned if Young Adult isn't a damn good movie. They craft an absolutely repulsive main character that's completely delusional to everything around her, but it's never tired or cliche like films like Bad Teacher or others. And when that moment of clarity finally does come near the end? Well, let's just say it was one of the more satisfying things I'd seen all year.
20 Feb 2012
Hard a very hard time getting into it. The protagonist is a relatively awful person and spends the whole movie insulting anyone who doesn't live in a big city. We get the picture that her life isn't as great as she deludes herself into believing, but when her eyes are about to be opened one of the characters from the small town reinforces all of her beliefs and she becomes a horrible person again. I just don't like Diablo Cody screenplays.
06 Jan 2012
Glad I went for the unexpected and saw this over either of the two Spielberg films currently in theaters. Charlize Theron's character is despicable and she plays it to the tee. Patton Oswalt is surprisingly good. He deserves more Oscar buzz. Young Adult doesn't hold back and delves into some dark, uncomfortable drama, but there are some great moments of comedy too.
