Someone described it to me as being Scorsese's attempt at making a Lynch film but recognizing and nurturing the humor from some of the oddities that occur. Very much like a dream in which you can't accomplish a simple task. Or a normal day at work when you put it that way.

The ultimate night-gone-wrong film. Scorsese funnels his irrepressible nervous energy into some of the most uncomfortable black humor of his career, turning a meet-cute comedy of errors into a Kafka-esque (I *know,* but it truly applies here) nightmare of misgivings and misunderstandings. As an exercise in style, it's one of Scorsese's most accomplished efforts; as a piece of sheer entertainment, it ranks with Goodfellas or The Wolf of Wall Street.

Hugely underrated Scorsese movie. Great comic take on Kafka (most blatantly in the sequence with the gate keeper, sorry 'doorman' - with dialogue taken directly from the Kafka short "Vor dem Gesetz", which also appears in The Trial.) Nice pacing, nice use of twists and turns.

Oh god, oh jeez, what the fuck. Have you ever seen a more relentlessly anxious film? The nocturnal rat maze, circular and oppressive, presented in an off-beat and off-kilter time and space. "Different rules apply this late."

Great off-kilter nightmarish story told with bravura. Great camerawork and a plot that repeatedly shows that nothing good ever happens after 2am on a weekday. At times very funny and at times very uncomfortable. But mostly both things at the same time.

DICK MILLER! and Scorcese waving his cinematic trick dick every chance he gets. That zoom in on the wink though A+ This actor looks like someone you'd hire for that part in the Taxi Driver 3D show at Universal where Bickle jumps out of the screen onto the stage to shoot the pimp in the stomach.

It has its fans, but After Hours always struck me as being a noble failure from Scorsese, made during a difficult period in his career. Auteurists can surely link Paul to Travis Bickle, but Dunne is an acquired taste, especially in leading roles, and while he is offered solid support, none of the performances particularly stand out. Ultimately the problem is the writing: the faux Kafkaesque situations Paul finds himself in are neither absurd, surreal or funny enough to really leave a mark.

I see a lot of comparisons to Lynch's retarded brand of surrealism or Kafka, but my interpretation of "After Hours" is just a screwball comedy coming from the mind of a paranoid New Yorker. It's certainly one of the most unique movies in Scorsese's catalog, but it's also a great movie, almost like watching a train wreck in slow motion when the only word that comes to mind is "majestic".

I can honestly say that this was the closest thing to an actual dream experience set to film. While Lynch has mastered his own nightmare-world, "After Hours" felt much more familiar to me. It is littered with continuity errors and plot holes that build a fragmented atmosphere. I think this is Scorsese's most inspired work.

A film full of life lessons: Never talk to girls in restaurants late at night, never try to have a social life outside your job, never go in a bar after 1a.m., never talk to girls about books, never read books, never leave your job, never get involved with papier mache in any way.

Collective New York phobias. These mercilessly observed encounters could easily have become monotonous if the hero himself remained a simple polestar of sanity. He perhaps begins as one. But he undergoes a gradual transformation from everyman to "other-man," becoming stranger and stranger, differenter and differenter, as the night rolls on. New Yorkized, you might want to say, but better just say humanized.

Scorsese at his weirdest and at his most deliciously entertaining -Griffin Dune is the ideal protagonist through this surreal, Kafkaesque post-midnight odyssey. Minion's script is inspired, Marty's camerawork is typically superb and the whole thing comes together as wonderfully twisted and deeply involving.

Every once in a while, a little movie comes along that pushes all the right buttons for me. The film is just a riot from start to finish. Griffin Dunne is particularly great as the working class schmuck, an ordinary, down-on-his-luck guy whose only wish is to survive the night as he seeks distraction from the pain of his dead-end job. One of Scorsese's most overlooked films, albeit, one that is right up there with the rest.

It's fine. I was enjoying it for the most part and then the third act kind of goes off the rails. It gets too whacky, coincidental, and absurd for my tastes. It also starts to feel so drawn out that I just got the feeling it was trying to do too much to elongate it's runtime to a respectable 90ish minutes.

This is Scorsese-lite but full of dark humor and surreal coincidences. The only major flaw is probably Griffin Dunne who is one of the most 80's actors ever and immediately dates the film in a bad way with his campy nebbish presence. The rest of the cast is alright but the events are a little too madcap for my tastes. It's still a nice display of Scorsese's frenetic style involving more conventional characters.

Amazing dark comedy from Scorsese showing just how wrong a night out can go. The lead finds himself in worse and worse situations as his night goes on that are both hilarious and disturbing. One of Scorsese's most underrated works. Joseph Minion's script is a very bizarre, funny/disturbing adventure spanning one night in SoHo, with more than a nod to Franz Kafka but also a distinctively 1980s atmosphere. A very nice cast and typically great editing by Thelma Schoonmaker.

Knew I was in for a treat with it being written by Minion who also did a personal favorite of mine - Vampire's Kiss. To say this rivals the craziness of Kiss is truly a compliment as I thought nothing could. I always love a protagonist who just can't catch a break nor help their situation and Dunne inhabits that role as if he wasn't leaving his own skin. Awkward quirky goodness from Scorsese.

This movie attempts to redefine having a bad night. At first the nights events are a believable sequence of unfortunate events. But as the night progresses they become increasingly more unbelievable and eventually are just absurd. Linda Fiorentino was great. Due to a poor story, bad direction or both the other women were not genuine in their roles. The ending was cheap and ridiculous.

A hard film to take. Even an hour in, I wasn't sure how seriously to take it. It plays out like a farce, and reminds me of how unseriously I can take that kind of humour. Tonally, this is too on the fence between comedy and drama, but it is a kinetic and fun exploration of a man's terrible night, played out with his terrible decisions. I still think this would've been better as a short or mid-length film, maybe for New York Stories.

The beginning is enjoyable and full of opportunities. Then towards the end it gets a bit too much. It came to my mind that this film is truly Kafkaesque: 'a greater force that subdues the protagonist beyond his control'. Pretty neat, but I don't need to rewatch.

The deliberately confounding, absurdist humor of AFTER HOURS feels like a real outlier in the filmography of Martin Scorsese. Yet upon closer inspection it fits right in with the director's paranoid style and ability to generate empathy for the common, fundamentally flawed man. It plays like an uncomfortable dream, always on the cusp of launching into a full-fledged freak out, but Griffin Dunne's Everyman posture keeps the film grounded. This is '80s Dadaism at its best.

A wise bartender once told me that nothing good ever happens after 2:00am. Paul Hackett would probably agree. Martin Scorsese directed, and his work here is lively and companionable; the camera scoots around, making jokes-or, at least, near-jokes. But this skittish paranoid fantasy is just a classroom exercise of a movie: elegant, crisp, and flashy, with perky zooms and cute little dissolves. Scorsese uses his skills (and even his personality) like a hired hand, making a vacuous, polished piece of consumer goods-all surface.

A brilliant marriage of Kafka & Pynchon. Scorsese was nigh unrecognizable, channeling the best of Gilliam in this lesser known rival to the mighty Brazil. Still After Hours struggles under the weight of a tiny budget, often feeling overwhelmingly 80s (i.e., raunchy comedy vibes). Still this is a true gem that is much more original & thought-provoking than the ho-hum conventionality of the meticulous grandeur of Scorsese's later works. A real shame that Scorsese got so serious over the years.

Aside from anything else, just the hilarious and devastating dialogue in the opening scene, the use of “Air on the G string”, and the shot of Griffin Dunne leaving work through some massive gates make the entire film very worthwhile and memorable as a depiction of the contemporary desert, deserted of significance. But there are many other great parts too. And in fact, it’s quite interesting that Scorsese wanted to make a film like this one. One suspects Minion deserves greater recognition.

One of the most underrated films by cinema legend, Martin Scorsese, After Hours traces one man's night(mare) through the streets of New York. The evening starts off promisingly enough when he gets a number from a girl he meets in a diner, but after a run of ludicrously bad luck, the night slowly turns in on him til eventually he fears for his life as he's chased by vigilante ice-cream vans and the like.
