Pig reminded me of Joe which I also enjoyed. I don't know what precisely needs to be done to get Cage to put in the effort but you can tell this isn't just a cash grab for Nic. Or to put it another way, he isn't just trying to bring home the bacon. ahhhhhhh, there it is.

After spending about a decade in the bargain bins, Cage seems to have found a stride in movies as bat shit crazy as Cage himself. It remains unclear if Cage has decided he didn't want to fade to obscurity in shitty generic action movies, or if no one really knew how to use an actor who could go full Cage at any moment, but this one was a winner. It isn't the "John Wick" rip off it appears to be, it's a surprisingly deep, contemplative exploration of how people deal with loss.

One of 2021’s very best movies. Seeing Nicolas Cage taking on more roles recently has been pretty fun, especially when he’s giving his all like one this one. The story is handled with so much care and maturity. I’ll take grief/loss stories like this over any revenge flick from Hollywood any day. Very few movies leave me sitting in silence during the credits, but this one did it for me. Expertly paced and acted from everyone (even Wolff) and with a very hard-hitting climax. Damn good.

In one of my favorite written film reviews, the late, great Pauline Kael wrote of Cage in Vampire's Kiss that, "He is an actor before he is a human being". As if by premonition, Nic has been living up to the mantra in every film since, and Pig may be his late career exemplar. It's all high nihilistic fantasy - ’Oedipus at Colonus' with Portland instead of Thebes - but this of course means, with Cage's embodiment of craft, there are a few scenes that may change your life.

Writer/director Sarnoski wants to be a great sophisticate, embellishing his pulp setup with high-toned touches left and right, but even if Cage gives it gravitas, the stuff is never real (like our eternally bloody hero tells a former employee at one crucial point with his version of a TED talk). In the end we are left with a second-rate, derivative dead wife drama that pretentiously thinks it serves haute cuisine.

Yes Cage is good, although not outstanding as many have claimed, but the director confuses a brooding atmosphere for depth, and the quieter moments have a calculated melancholy 'folksiness' that is reminiscent of David Gordon Green, who should not be an inspiration to anyone, consciously or otherwise.

An intriguing anti-action movie that comes off as something of a modernized Buddhist parable. The sentimentality is often dialed up a little too high and certain scenes are too sickly sweet, but still the ambiance and deftly nuanced acting from the entire cast keeps this flick afloat. Overall, something of a sequel in spirit to Leave No Trace, in a rapidly growing genre of Oregon-hippie/wildman-core.

Half expected cage to grab a bunch of guns and go bananas at some point. Just because...cage. What I got instead was an unconventional three course menu laden with undertones that played all the right strings on my "misanthropig" heart, a story about loss, failure and abandonment amidst the detached shark tank idiocracy we call "society". Wolff listening to an explanatory voice-over rather than the classical music itself was sheer genius. Recommendo!

Why does he have to do this? Why can't he just be a joke? The entire story almost feels like meta, wild man Cage stepping out of the woods for a brief flash to show us what a simple story, one not that different from the ones he's played so badly ten times in the last 18 months alone, can actually mean. Sure, authenticity is just a literary device and all that, but damnit, this is such a beautiful film.

Plenty of atmosphere but the story is so full of crap that it was really hard to enjoy. Maybe I am just sick of Nicolas Cage or perhaps just tired of nonsensical characters and stupid stories with forced plots and asinine dialogs. Subtract out the crap and there is very little left. I was mostly not amused, and struggled to remain interested long enough to get to the closing credits. I really just have to ask, why not just make a good movie instead?

What a dreadful movie. Tries a potpourri of soulful, goofy, over-the-top, and sentimental, and (1) even if it had succeeded at what it was trying to do, I think it would still have been nauseous, (2) it did not succeed at what it was trying to do. The cinematography could be described as "generic arthouse derivative." High point was Nic Cage letting loose a feral scream at a Portland denizen as he steals a bike from their porch.

A terminally strange meditation on.... well, it's all a bit difficult to parse on a first viewing, and it feels like both Sarnoski and Cage are being a little too obscure for their own good; a collage of thoughts, feelings and memories but the film is neither strong enough narratively, or accomplished enough on a technical level to be particularly satisfying. A fine performance from Cage as the "wild man" entering "polite society" again is the main reason to see this.

The anti-John Wick meets Ratatouille in Blue Ruin-land? The underground restaurant-worker fight club scene establishes a tone of brutality that, although literally staining the main character’s face until the end, cannot be coherently juggled alongside the brooding yet stifled melodramatic tone. It creates an opportunity for memorable individual scenes of powerhouse performance and almost Lynchian contorted faces hinting at an incomprehensible madness - but never quite the reality of loss.

Pig is a profoundly heartfelt and poignant account of loss and grief. It's John Wick if John Wick was an arthouse dramedy. All the ingredients are present; it's excellent cinematography, tasteful storytelling, and charming performances from both Cage and his co-star Wolff. Sarnoski demonstrates skillful and decisive directorial ability in his debut, it feels that there is not a second or line of dialogue wasted here. The film speaks volumes in it's silence. If you're seeking closure, don't.

Maybe it's just the subject matter that talks to my soul. Cage was great. Though we spend little time with the pig, the relationship is established instantly, in large part because of having us hear the pig snorting constantly (even when off screen). It made his presence always felt for us, just as it was with Cage's character. The credits ending with sounds of the pig was a nice touch too. The entire movie didn't really unfold like I expected so it deserves credit. Also shot beautifully.

I admire Sarnoski's decision in defying expectations, eschewing the temptation a showy revenge fantasy in favour of a more toned down and human direction, but it achieves this by resorting to mostly superficial atmospherics - increase your brightness, yo! - and a narrative that barely scratches the surface of its potential. Kind of like opening a family size bag of chips that's mostly air.

Not quite the detective film you or I should expect, as this seems ambling throughout, but seems to gently come together at the end. There's tough topics to get through, and a particularly grumpy Cage, and it initially seems this film has a dark bite to it, but instead what emerges is something far more calmer and gracious. The two leads work excellently with each other, and there's also the very memorable waiter character who shares an incredible scene with them.

Some kind of meditative rural neo-noir on grief and the ways we find to endure and live with it -- maybe in the woods, all aline, living like in the 19th century, with a pig as the sole company. Very noirish Nicolas Cage vehicle, with a more inhibited performance that's all silent rage. I know his acting is controversial, but if you love him, as I do, there is a lot to enjoy here. The script, alas, was not as enjoyable. The characters are archetypal and thinly veiled cliches abound. The dark-toned, tense buildup really raises expectations, but the story goes out with a whimper.

I wouldn't say I was skeptical of this film going in, but I'll admit to approaching it with some caution; a movie about Nicholas Cage hunting down his stolen truffle pig is ripe for acclaim for the memes alone, and even the slightest amount of subversion or thematic weight could be enough to trigger that response. And yet, I'm happy to say this is a genuinely wonderful film that's thoughtfully written, finely crafted, and superbly acted. Loved it.

A mostly low-key drama but with some moments of brutality (I didn’t understand why the protagonist had to let himself get beaten up in that basement scene) is presumably meant as a way for this debut director to attract bigger things. Competently filmed, but there’s something faintly absurd about the whole story, which runs counter to the portentousness with which everything is suffused: evidence of not yet having matured as a writer, perhaps. Moral: never underestimate the power of a good meal.

Obviously with anything like this it hinges on the ability of cage as a pure talent and ya he obviously still has it. Doesn’t revel in the ironic character that cage has built like Mandy does but instead festers in a brutal sadness that seems to be lingering in what modern audiences perceive of Cage. I loved Nic Cage since I saw "The Rock" as a child and skipped watching most of his bad action films. Seeing him acting his ass off in an I N T E N S E manner got me hyped from the beginning. The fact that you don't care about anything happening to any character apart from Cage's, especially not caring about the Oedipal storyline, is not making this any less interesting as one is captivated by Cage's haggard looks and his facial expressions (and the latter, oh boy)

This is a mysterious film, dark in tone and lighting wise at times, its a slow burn as far as the plot is concerned. It's certainly a bit of an acquired taste. It has an arty feel to it, certainly. The main character has quite a caveman type look and feel to him and his background is very unclear for the most part, which is where the mystery mainly comes from. Unusual but excellent film, with a great performance by Cage.

It is a really beautifully rendered, subtly observed story about loss and grief and like existence itself. The gradual reveal of who Robin is is handled quite well, because the character himself is in a way remembering who he was and the counterpoints Wolff and Arkin are perfectly chosen to illuminate him, to bring him back into existing.

It does a good job of showing how disconnection can happen.

Cage is an instrument of vengeance and his only weapon is the TRUTH. A masterpiece.
